GREEN LANTERN: James Gunn Addresses Decision To Scrap TV Show Revolving Around Alan Scott And Guy Gardner

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has addressed the cancellation of HBO Max's original Green Lantern TV series, sharing praise for Finn Wittrock and explaining why it being scrapped is "a part of the job."

Less than a day after the news that James Gunn and Peter Safran would take charge of DC Studios for Warner Bros., we learned that HBO Max's Green Lantern TV series had been scrapped.

A few months later, DC Studios announced Lanterns, a TV show revolving around Hal Jordan and John Stewart. They'd seemingly been off-limits to the other show (which may or may not have been set in the DCEU) as the idea was to put the spotlight on Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, with Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine tapped to play the heroes.

Gunn has yet to cast his Hal and John, but SUPERMAN will see Nathan Fillion suit up as Guy.

Addressing a fan on Threads, the filmmaker addressed the cancellation. "I didn't think it was in the DCEU, but it was before my time. That said, I think Finn's a talented guy and he'll be okay," Gunn said. "Writers, directors, actors have projects fall through every day. We've all had it happen many times. It's not being 'done dirty', it's a part of the job."

Having been part of the Hollywood system for decades, Gunn clearly feels little sympathy for those who had been developing the previous Green Lantern series.

Writer and showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith (one of the many filmmakers to take a crack at The Flash movie before "creative differences" came into play) had already departed the series despite completing scripts for a full eight-episode season. It appears he chose to do so after yet another round of executive changes at Warner Bros Discovery.

Once Walter Hamada exited DC Films, the decision was made to start over and focus on John, so Gunn isn't lying when he says Green Lantern had been scrapped long before he signed up to reboot the DCU.

There were budgetary concerns about Green Lantern in its previous form, while many fans were upset to see Hal and John sidelined in preference of Guy and Alan (the story was going to play out across two different time periods).

The fact it didn't happen isn't the end of the world and Lanterns looks to be the version of this story comic book fans do want to see. To keep the budget of this Max series under control, the plan is to follow its lead characters as they investigate "a terrestrial-based mystery."

Following some recent hints from Gunn on social media, we're expecting Hal and John to be among the next wave of DCU characters cast by DC Studios.

GL is an extremely important IP in terms of wolrdbuilding, i truly hope they intend to faithfully adapt the comics.

I want my f*cking Emotional Spectrum with Saint Walker, Larfleeze and Atrocitus ffs!

@Doomsday8888 - blackest night could make a cool justice league movie. Certainly not the first but maybe the second before their crisis.

@Origame
Or Sinistro Corps War before that.

Johns' Lanters Saga is an All-Time classic and BTFO most of Big 2 events, especially the current ones.

Thing is...it's all connected with Geoff, every single thing, everything goes back to COIE, you need the Anti-Monitor, then there's Infinite Crisis where you have Superboy Prime and these 2 characters in Sinestro Corps War with f*cking Parallax and Cyborg Superman!

AWWWW SHIIEEET, I'M ALREADY HARD thinking about this moment:

@Doomsday8888 - only thing is for a movie series I just don't want it all to be lantern based. And since blackest night is so linked to so many characters that seems like the best choice to use.

Meanwhile the emotional spectrum and sinestro corps war would be better as part of the lantern show or movies with some guest appearances.

Meanwhile crisis is like the infinity war of dc.

@Doomsday8888 -
I would LOVE to see a live adaptation of the Sinestro Corps war.
Probably my favorite run ever.

@Doomsday8888 - Makes you think why the hell they didn't actually brought Geoffs Johns to help them map things better. Someone that has done classic stories and lore like you said should be essential in building and developing stuff like this.

WBD is just as short-sighted and dumb as WB. Lame as hell.

Lethal Weapon, but with 2 reluctant Green Lanterns being paired up..The story of the first Sector to be granted 2 lanterns at the same time.

Hal is the "living-on-the-edge" veteran, while Stewart is the straigh-laced and serious new partner (Murtaugh).

They investigate Sinestro and a looming cosmic threat for the DCU. Tease the multiple lantern factions, and a war coming in the future

@xfan320 - reverse it so it's like Lethal Weapon....a proven IP.

Stewart is the straight -laced veteran trying to tame this young guy who takes to many risks in Hal Jordan....which will turn Hal into the Greatest GL ever eventually.

Then there's Guy to deal with ... 🤦

One of the advantages (if anyone can actually relate) of not reading the comics is that I have no preferences, nor expectations, so I don't care what they do. I just want to kick back and alllow myself to be entertained.

I would have been interested to see that show since I liked the cast they were assembling and the premise of having these Lanterns in various time periods investigating the same threat but oh well…

Anyway , looking forward to Lanterns and hope to hear casting news soon!!.

Good riddance. New 52 Alan Scott has just been retconned as Alan Scott in all versions now, which is an utter shame.

Probably for the best! The studios are seeing that they are losing a lot of money on sorry writing and woke content.

Just think about the "Lanterns", with the special effects and CGI alone, this show has to knock it out the park with the story.

I really hope they go ALL IN on Lanterns. The stories could be larger than anything Star Wars.

Just follow the outline Bruce Timm laid out in his Green Lantern animated series. It was so good the last episode had me in tears and the scope of it was epic.

Also know, I think....one of the Young Justice episodes finished the good Red Lantern's final story.
