Deadline reports that Stargirl is set to end with its third season, which is currently airing on The CW, and will continue to do so until December. This news comes less than a month after the Nexstar Media Group acquired the struggling network, and the expectation has been that more cancellations were beckoning.

For starters, the company plans to focus on unscripted content, while Warner Bros. Discovery has been looking to move away from the Arrowverse to focus on DCU-set projects on HBO Max for some time. Nextar pulled the plug on Stargirl, though.

Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow were cancelled earlier this year, while The Flash, Riverdale, and Nancy Drew are all also ending with their current seasons. However, the team behind Stargirl were told early on that the third season was likely to be the last one, so they were given the opportunity to write a satisfying ending.

"Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons," Geoff Johns said in a statement today. "With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure."

"The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life. Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible - with grace, strength and humor - exceeding my wildest expectations."

"I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I’m beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons," he concluded. "Most series never get this far. We couldn’t be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built!"

Stargirl actress Brec Bassinger adds, "Getting to play Stargirl and be a part of the DC Universe has been the greatest honor, and I am so grateful for every moment of it. I would like to thank our fearless leader Geoff Johns, along with WBTV, The CW, the cast and crew of Stargirl, and of course, the fans. Thank you. This show will forever live in my heart."

The trade notes that more decisions are likely incoming for a number of shows, including Walker, Supernatural spinoff The Winchesters, and Superman & Lois. We have to believe the latter could find a new home elsewhere, though with Henry Cavill back as the big screen Man of Steel, it's possible Warner Bros. Discovery will move on from Tyler Hoechlin's version.

We'll have to wait and see what happens, but it's clear a new era for the DCU beckons. Unfortunately, that means the end of the Arrowverse, though it had a fantastic run over the past decade.

@GhostDog - yeah. It happens too often that studios don't appreciate the good projects they have.

@GhostDog - The previous regime did give it a good promotion. All the way since February even if it was just a tease of Stargirl vs Jade which lasted 10 seconds. They did care and would have kept on renewing it until it fulfilled it's 6th Seasons plans even without the Netflix deal.

Enter Nexstar and literally everything goes up in smoke. I wish them the worst.

Well it was fun while it lasted and compared to other Arrowverse shows, I was just glad it wasn't as inclusive as others similar to Superman & Lois.
