STARGIRL: First Look At John Wesley Shipp's Jay Garrick/The Flash Return For JSA Team-Up Revealed

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have a first look at John Wesley Shipp's return as the Fastest Man Alive, Jay Garrick, in the upcoming ninth episode of Stargirl. The actor returns as the Golden Age version of The Flash for the show's first Arrowverse crossover, though he won't be hanging out with Courtney Whitmore.

Instead, we're getting flashbacks to his time as a member of the original Justice Society of America. This means we'll also get to spend time with the likes of Sylvester Pemberton/Starman (Joel McHale), Johnny Thunder (Ethan Embry), Rex Tyler/Hourman (Lou Ferrigno Jr.), and Ted Grant/Wildcat (Brian Stapf) as they square off with Nick Taraby's villainous Eclipso.

In the present day, that big bad is set to take aim at Stargirl and her family, and we can only hope that The Flash returns somewhere down the line for a team-up.

While the JSA was wiped out at the start of Stargirl's first season, we know Starman somehow survived and is seemingly on a mission to regain his Cosmic Staff. We actually caught up with McHale recently to ask what it's been like to find himself in the DC Universe at this stage of his career.

"I’m thrilled. Believe me, when Geoff Johns from Stargirl said, ‘Hey, wanna play Starman? You get to wear a supersuit and have a cosmic staff and blow shit up,'" the actor recalled. "Again, I’m saying, ‘How did I get to this point in my career? How did it happen? I don’t know why I’m so lucky, but I’m not going to ask any more questions and I’m just thrilled.’"

@JayBarrick - yeah was hoping for a suit more in the star girl style, although the earth prime suit looks better with them than i thought it would, expected it to look a lot more out of place

@JayBarrick -

When he was announced I was hoping we would see him in the original costume, like teased in S1, but at least this version of the suit looks pretty good still. Makes me wonder if he actually is the same version of Jay we've already meant and what will be explained for how he survived when the other JSA didn't

@Armageddon26 - I am betting, for not jumping the gun, that it is the same Jay we've already met since the 2nd Season of The Flash.

Considering what Geoff Johns has been saying about this development, about how it “connects our universe directly with the other shows, and also shows that we’re part of a grander universe. “It opens up the door to opportunities for us to eventually interact with those [Arrowverse] characters, and that was important,” “And when we eventually do do it, we’ll do it in a hopefully special, Stargirl way”, I have almost no doubts that it is our Jay Garrick that was from Earth-3 in the pre-Crisis era years ago.

How it could work post-Crisis now? Pretty simple IMO: Jay's history was rewritten just like it was with other heroes such as Superman, Supergirl and Black Lightning (all of them previously belonged to different Earths) so that now they always lived in the same Earth Prime and it is treated as a known historical fact. Jay's story could be that he now was from Earth-2 and was a JSA member but later on migrated to Earth Prime just as we saw in Flash 7x17.

(They also should explain at some point how he survived the ISA's ambush in Stargirl's timeline in 2010 to have everything covered)

I'll chalk it up that Jay wore the original costume from that photo when he was younger, maybe. :P Then again speedsters could age in a different way and if they ever do another JSA flashback that is from way earlier they should give him that one.

What actually happened to Flash in the modern day time period? Is he dead like the rest of the JSA?

I HATE the fake abs on Starman's costume. My eye was immediately drawn to it and it's just out of place. I think it's because it's on a white suit that makes it look so fake. Not saying Joel McHale doesn't have a six pack, I haven't seen him shirtless in a while. But the abs on the suit are jarringly fake.
Outside of that, I'm really looking forward to watching this. As @TheDoctor1225 said above, Shipp is always a welcome presence in the Arrowverse.

That group shot is like a cosplay dedication scale. You've got Shipp and Ferrigno Jr on one end that are basically professional cosplayers, spending months of their lives and paychecks for their costumes, then you've got Wilson who grabbed the first thing in his closet that kind of sort of is similar to a character he wants to cosplay as.

And then you have Hale in the middle, who looks like he grabbed something off the rack from Party City.
