STARGIRL SPOILER FREE Pilot Review: "A Decent Start To A Show With Loads Of Potential"

Some heroes have powers, and some heroes don't. Then there's the area in between where the hero has a weapon or tool that gives them the powers. Stargirl fits the description for that area to a tee. 

The DC Universe streaming service has just released its Stargirl show, as it will also premiere on the CW. As a quick summary, Stargirl focuses on a teenage girl named Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) who moves to Nebraska with her stepdad (Luke Wilson). Things aren't easy for her at first, until she discovers her stepdad was the sidekick to Starman (Joel McHale), and she finds the energy-filled staff that belonged to him. Now it's her turn to be the hero he once was. 

First things first, this show looks and feels more or less like a movie. The CGI and cinematography were excellent for the most part, especially the first action sequence.

The pilot does a nice job of introducing the characters, without it feeling overwhelming or forced. It's more of a slow burn than anything though, so if you're expecting her to suit up the first episode, think again. The tone of this show is very family-oriented, which is a good contrast from Titans or Doom Patrol. Sometimes the tone gets a bit corny or as some would say "Disney Channel-ish", but it never becomes unwatchable. 

It was impressive to see this show is dedicated on displaying the Justice Society of America as well. Last but not least, the acting is good enough. Brec Bassinger as the lead of the show is okay, but with time under her belt, I'm sure she will get better. Also, it's not like the pilot gives her much to do anyway. However, I can see Luke Wilson as Pat Dugan (her stepdad) being the star of the show. 

Overall, it's a decent start to a show with loads of potential. Hopefully, it will actually reach that potential. That being said, if you want a pleasant watch with some action, then give Stargirl a chance.
