After a stellar fourth season, Supergirl returned for its fifth season tonight with an emotional premiere that saw some pretty major developments on the Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Lena (Katie McGrath) front.

The former best friends may have taken the first step toward replicating the storied rivalry between their respective family members, Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer).

Next week, Ma'alefa'ak (Phil LaMarr) continues his vendetta against his brother J'onn J'onzz (David Harewood) and seriously ups the ante, which isn't good news for anyone. Meanwhile, Kara also has an unexpected situation of her own to handle when she gains a new enemy in her own sister Alex (Chyler Leigh).

Season three saw Supergirl stop Reign and the other Worldkillers’ threat to humanity and our planet, and in the process, Kara was shocked to find her mother Alura alive and living in a salvaged Argo City that survived the destruction of Krypton. Reconnecting with her past caused Kara to realize that her true home is now here on Earth, where big changes are taking place for her and all of her friends in National City – and also, it appears, for a doppelganger in Russia! Season four promises to be full of surprises, action, adventure and lots of big revelations for Supergirl, Alex, James, J’onn, Lena and Brainy.

Supergirl features:
Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl
Mehcad Brooks as James 'Jimmy' Olsen/Guardian
Chyler Leigh as Alexandra 'Alex' Danvers
Jeremy Jordan as Winslow 'Winn' Schott
David Harewood as J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter
Katie McGrath as Lena Luthor
Jesse Rath as Querl Dox/Brainiac 5
Sam Witwer as Ben Lockwood/Agent Liberty
Nicole Maines as Nia Nal/Dreamer
April Parker Jones as Colonel Haley
David Ajala as Manchester Black
Rhona Mitra as Mercy Graves
Robert Baker as Otis Graves
Erica Durance as Alura Zor-El
Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor

The coffee house scene to start things off had me worried.
I feel like the biggest anchor slowing this show down has been hitting all the checkboxes in the social justice checklist...

But it got better.
Dig the new suit too.
It looks strong in action.

Good premiere, the digitized logo fits the tech theme.

Andrea is too sketchy and means all kind of professional trouble at CatCo. The fact she was just chosen for being Lena's old BFF and the means to Lena's petty ends to make the life of Kara a living hell with outing her as Supergirl is the cherry on top. Counting down the eps until they end up digging in on who her father is because their Obsidian North is either with Leviathan or will be taken by them or it already is.

Her whole plan with that, besides turning CatCo into a "all about the clicks" tabloid newspaper, in making the VR contact lenses end everywhere give red flags all over.

I wonder if she holds Kelly to the same ultimatum contract she put on the rest that work on the above floor.

Jimmy gave her a polite FU in the end by casually quitting, that is the first step in his exit from the show.

The new Supergirl suit looked good + the scene of them firing all at once to Midnight. Making her removal of glasses activate the micro suit is a neat idea, as long as the glasses never break of course or she is obviously wearing them. TBH I think later on the mechanics behind it will end up being the thing to be upgraded, but not the suit per se.

Gotta agree with Nia about Hannibal Lecter being the best villain but Brainy was right about what made Miranda Priesly awful. (And all of the negative characteristics that he listed fit Lena too much right now) Their kiss at the end was nice btw.

William so far is just kind of a sell out, Andrea is still more annoying than him.

I thought they were never going to fully show Ma'alefa'ak as they said but to see him in his full robes was a nice surprise, he now stands out from Martian Manhunter. Their storyline looks interesting.

And Lena is officially the most toxic character as of now. Not only is she way more vindictive that I thought with her failed attempt to ruin Kara's reputation but now she has even more deluded senses of grandeur that in S4. "I have a calling to fix mankind", yikes. O_o Add how she is going to manipulate her further making her think they are friends is just messed up.

And her AI, Hope, is definitely going to become a HUGE problem for everyone later. An unfeeling and learning digital sentient being that continues to run simulations where Kara dies by Lena's hands and confirms they can be applied on real life? Plus it runs synch with Lex's watch along now with that beacon watch Kara gave her? It's an open invitation for dinner and desert for Leviathan.

Eve's fate will soon be revealed.

Can't wait for more.

Kara's confession to Lena was amazing. Bar far some of the best acting I've seen on the show.
