SUPERMAN & LOIS Officially Has "One Or Two" Seasons Left Before DC Studios Ends The CW Series

We have a big update on Superman & Lois' future amid DC Studios' plans for the new DCU, and as expected, it sounds like the show's time is nearing its end. Find more details about what's happening here...

We anticipated this being the case, and with DC Studios looking to create a true shared universe, Superman & Lois' end is now drawing near. Answering questions from select members of the press at a recent DCU launch event, James Gunn and Peter Safran addressed the future of this popular CW series.

They told reporters that they believe the show has "one or two more seasons" left in the tank, though Gunn would add that Superman & Lois is "a show everybody likes, so it’s going to keep going for a little bit."

We find it hard to imagine Superman & Lois still being around when Superman: Legacy arrives in theaters in 2025, so if the upcoming third season isn't the show's last, then the fourth - which we're guessing would come our way in 2024 - will be.

The series has been on the bubble for a while now, with Nexstar Media Group's acquisition of The CW bringing many of the network's scripted shows to an end. There's a chance Superman & Lois could be moved to HBO Max, but that seems unlikely when the streamer will be home to all the DCU TV shows Gunn and Safran are dreaming up.

Interestingly, both of them were asked about Gotham Knights, but had no comment on the show. As it's been shot, we're guessing it will get a first season before quietly fading away (the response from fans to the trailers has not been kind).

Greg Berlanti's time overseeing the Arrowverse - and small screen DC projects in general - is clearly over. His Green Lantern TV show has been switched out for Lanterns, while Titans and Doom Patrol were recently cancelled. Dead Boy Detectives is still in the works, though whether it will actually happen is hard to say.

Superman & Lois season 3 and Gotham Knights both premiere on The CW on March 14.

I mean if anything I'm just grateful that it's no gonna overstay it's welcome so one of two more seasons is fitting to me.

I know what I want to see in the final season.

@Repian - if they were to do a death of superman story, would rather see them do All Star Superman adapted across the final season

Could even keep him dead and then maybe do a flashforward finale seeing his son taking up the mantle with a few call backs the show’s opening montage

@Repian - Interesting that they pretty much did all the characters sans Doomsday and Cyborg Superman, although Supergirl pretty much took a gigantic dump on that character and the first season was still kind of canon to the Arrowverse.

Maybe we'll see a new version of the character pop up.

@Repian - that would be pretty cool to see. They already have Steel and a Superboy, and I really wanna see Cyborg Superman and Doomsday in the show.

@bkmeijer1 - if they do this, i hope they do a lot better job with cyborg superman than that stupid supergirl show did!

@fosdog - I didn't mind that subplot, but I do wanna see it done differently as well. And seeing S&L is it's own universe, they can do so

Make way for Gunn's superman 🤣

There can only be 1.....but multiple Batmen is fine!!

At some point I'll stop complaining about cavill but they really could of given him a send off either in his own movie or Shazam 3 & kept it under the DC Else worlds label.

@ClungesForever - He doesn’t have the clout to override Reeves, and even if he did, it wouldn’t be healthy for the brand or financially beneficial to scrap The Batman II.

I dont mind as long as it continues to be written well and has a satisfying conclusion. Too many of the Arrowverse shows dragged on and they ended up suffering because of it.

I have not seen this but the dude playing Superman looks like he'd be an excellent Bizzaro

Actually if it gets this season and then one more to wrap it up I’ll be thrilled. That’s far more than I thought it would get with the way things are going at The CW now.

@PlusUltra - kind of expected word on Peacemaker season 2.

Guess Waller being set between Peacemaker and having Team Peacemaker is kinda confirmation there will be a season 2 I guess though.

Wonder, when they say 1 or 2 more seasons, do that include season 3 or what could come after season 3

@dracula - I think they 1 after season 3 and then that’s a wrap. They wanna shut it down asap

HeavyMetal4Life - 2/1/2023, 10:44 AM
@dracula - they're talking about a season 4 or 5. I think it would be great if they make it to a season 5, that would be a good run.
KelvTwelve

I'm fine with that. Better than 9 seasons of the Flash. As long as they keep the episode count sub 15, they can commit to making a few more good seasons.

They 100% have to end the show with Jordan becoming the main Superman. Hell, maybe they should actually commit to the Death of Superman (with the return being Jordan in his father's suit).
KelvTwelve
KelvTwelve - 2/1/2023, 4:53 AM
@KelvTwelve - A couple other concepts I think it'd be fun to see:

1. Maybe say screw it and introduce Damien? You don't have to introduce Batman, although it would be nice. But this could possibly be one of the only chances to get a live action version of the Super sons on screen.

2. Surprise Krypton connection - bring back Braniac from that show. Keep the same costume, he already looks fantastic.

3. Jimmy Olsen return. His presence felt sorely missed in the flashback episode. Even though they recasted Lex, I'd love to see Mehcad Brooks return to the role. We don't see him and Clark actually being best friends enough.

4. Superman vs the Elite adaptation. I know Supergirl did this but this version of Superman is practically asking for this storyline, especially with Clark having a super kid of his own, who is probably soon going to debate how he should handle his villains. I'd say just do a complete recast of the original actor and pretend like its a whole new story.

5. I kind of mentioned this before, but the final season has to be the death of Superman. The show did a twist on the 90's storyline in the first season, but it's just so obvious where the show needs to head to complete the story. Whether it's All-Star Superman or Doomsday, Lex being involved is 100% a must. I'm pretty bummed they're recasting, but if they're going to head in this direction, I can see why they'd want to leave the baggage of Supergirl's Lex behind.

Better to have a strong run than a long run

Better than any show with 10 freakin seasons :

Most shows now go on for way to long and become caricatures of their early seasons
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 7:04 AM
So we're having two Batmen and two Supermen in the coming years? It's better than nothing, so I ain't complaining.

I don't think it's up to them. If the CW doesn't order more episodes, there won't be more episodes.

@Blergh - true but the new management of cw has been praising the show

And WB can end the shows, part of why Legends ended was because the studio they filmed att was going to cost more and WB didnt want to pay
