Len Wein On A New Swamp Thing Movie

Len Wein On A New Swamp Thing Movie

The legendary co-creator of several X-Men including Wolverine, as well as countless other Marvel and DC properties spoke to Movieweb at SDCC. He spoke about the Swamp Thing movie which is currently in limbo, and how much he and others are working towards getting it off the ground..

We have heard from several directors and producers about their love for this character, and how much they would love to get a new movie into production..well add one more! Only this time its co-creator of several of fandom's most cherished characters, Len Wein.

Wein says that he is sure we will see the movie at some point. That there is a rights problem that he doesn't know too much about, but "We desperately want to make a new Swamp Thing". He says that he has written a script and that Producer Joel Silver is "Gung-ho to do it right, big budget, CG, the whole thing..". Akiva Goldsman will apparently re-work Wein's script, and he says once they work out the rights problems, they WILL make Swamp Thing.

Ok, This sounds a lot more promising than the last update we had on this. Of course, those issues with the rights aren't going away on their own. I just hope that everything works out and we get a proper version of this great character on-screen. Not that the other movies weren't fun, but they are a million miles away from The Earth Elemental introduced in Alan Moore's run, which by all accounts this movie would adapt.

Mickey Rourke is perfect.
Paint him green and he IS The Swamp Thing.
I also think Alan Moore should play Grigori Rasputin.

"Akiva Goldsman will apparently re-work Wein's script"

Does that sentence not fill anyone else with the same dread it does me?

The guy who also wrote Batman & Robin, the Da Vinci Code and produced Constantine and Jonah Hex?

Love the idea, but very concerned about what Goldsman will change to make it more 'Hollywood'.

Why does everyone want a swamp thing movie??..He's just a big plant. I never like him or man-thing(marvels version) cause it's cheesey. I mean there is one good thing that came out of the books..The John Constantine character. Other then that he's a plant. This doesnt deserve a big budget movie..because it's gonna bomb like Jonah Hex.

PP, thanks darling!

Kooldeath..Is that really all you think of him? did you actually read the comics or just look at the pictures?:)

A Swamp Thing series of films, maybe just a trilogy - would be awesome. A Birth to Godhood story.

@Anil
Nah dude, the comics are classic man. To me it's up there with Neil Gaiman's Sandman. It's such a compelling story. I believe the film may do well. The pictures doesn't fully express the premise of the plant animal. Some think it's a retelling of the creature of the black lagoon, which is pretty insulting to me. Alan Moore, the man behind Watchmen, is responsible for this amazing story.

I've said it before, Swamp Thing has one of the best supporting casts of any character in comics. I adore Moore's work on Swamp Thing and would love to see Jason Woodrue as the villian.

Yeah I have been dying for a good Swamp Thing movie for years. A CGI ST would be awesome.

Not too stoked about Goldsman being attached. He's the type of guy that could ####-up a wet dream.

I don't think we need a new Swamp Thing. They just want to get this made. If anything, use Alan Moore as your basis, Warner. It's got CBM regulars like Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman so I think it could be good.

@Intruder.. just cause I don't like what you like im talknig out my ass ?? I bet you don'tt like every character I do. So because you don't like a character I do that means you talk out your ass.. Yeah its different when you or others on here like or dislike something. I state my opinion get blasted. You can state yours and its alright. Double Standards huh.

Swamp Thing never interest me as a character. I just thought of him as a big walking plant. I did give credit that the series brought us Constantine. There was a guy acouple days a go said he couldnt stand Deadpool no one blast him, they said just said Deadpol was a good character.

MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/2/2010, 2:32 PM
But your opinion isn't an informed one. I'm not saying you should be blasted, I'm just saying that referring to Swamp Thing as a walking Plant is like referring to Batman as a dude dressed as a bat. Yes, obviously thats his appearance, but there is so much more to him than that.
kooldeath
kooldeath - 8/2/2010, 2:45 PM
How do you know ? Do you know what i have read or what I am currently reading ? nope I didn't tell you. And Yes Batman is just a guy in a bat suit. Thats what they are if you want to honest about. It's the writters that give then there purpose.
Long ago Batman was campy, the frank miller got ahold of him and made him a badass and a dark brooding character. I don't care for Alan Moore..I read the Watchman I didn't like it. Maybe I should give Swampthing a better chance, but I don't like the character. Let's put it this way , instead of not liking Swampy his chatacter doesnt interest me. Now if Ennis where to write it maybe i would give him a better chance.
ROMACK
ROMACK - 8/2/2010, 2:50 PM
Tab@ Don't judge Swamp Thing by the movies. He is a very complex deep character. And RorMachine is really rockin' the Chops isn't he?
ROMACK
ROMACK - 8/2/2010, 2:55 PM
Kooldeath@ I have liked Swamp Thing since the days of Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. I also liked the Moore stuff quite a bit. But I agree with you about Garth Ennis writing on Swamp Thing. That would be awesome dude.
kooldeath
kooldeath - 8/2/2010, 3:04 PM
Thank you Romack.. see I don't like the character for the character, but if Idk a writer i liked did it I would give it more of a chance. I would read it if Garth Ennis or Neil Gaiman wrote some. If tehy did maybe ill give it more of a chance.
ROMACK
ROMACK - 8/2/2010, 3:14 PM
You like what you like. That's life and there is nothing wrong with it. There are alot of characters that just don't appeal to me. I really don't care for Dr. Strange that much. That's just the way it is, but I am for any GOOD CBMs.

YIPPEE KI YAY!!:D This could be the best comic movie ever!!... If they do it right? Not so sure about Goldman´s writing talents????
David Croenenberg, Guillermo del Toro, David Fincher, Vincenzo Natali or maybe Nicolas Winding Refn as the director.

Michael Fassbender as Dr. Alec Holland and Swamp Thing!:D Althought Rourke is awesome choice!
Bill Nighy or John Malkovich as Anton Arcane
Sophia Myles as Linda Holland
Ed Harris as Gen. Sunderland (Goddamit if Martin Landau would still be young he would be perfect as Sunderland)
Doug Jones as Gregori Arcane / Patchwork Man
James Caviezel as Matthew Cable
Jackie Earle Haley or Willem Dafoe as Jason Woodrue / Floronic Man (They should use the same technology what they used in Tron: Legacy then this character would be creepy as h*ll! With the face of Dafoe of Haley! JUST AWESOME!:D)
And
Lynn Collins as Abigail Arcane

I AGREE WITH ROMACK!:D

Which came first Man-thing or Swapthing ?
Will this be full cgi or man in a suit. Maybe I should be a little more open minded and give it shot. Thank you Ror. Umm which books or graphic nivels should i pick up and read ?

Maybe it should be a cartoon and I would like it more then.

@kooldeath: Pick up the collected Alan Moore stories. Then you'll see why Swamp Thing is a little more than just a plant.

John Constantine was created FOR Swamp Thing by Alan Moore, and appears quite often, but it's very different to the Hellblazer series.
