We recently found out that there's a new live-action Swamp Thing series in the works for the upcoming DC Universe streaming service, and now we have some new details on the show's leads.

That Hashtag Show has come across character breakdowns for Alec Holland, a.k.a. Swamp Thing, and Abby Arcane.

Just like the comics, it sounds like these two are destined to begin a rather unconventional relationship (The Shape of Water is name-dropped), but these descriptions also outline their backgrounds and give us some idea of what to expect from the plot. In the vein of AMC's Preacher, it sounds like Swamp Thing will introduce several new supporting characters and place more of a focus on Abby's hometown and its residents.

[ABBY ARCANE] Female, 30s, smart, private, professional, something of a loner, Abby works for the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, which has sent her to her hometown of Houma after ten years away to check out the worrying "Houma Flu." After losing her mother at age 8 and bouncing through a series of foster families, Abby suddenly left Houma after high school to study medicine. Abby is good at her job but currently in the doghouse with her boss. Struggling with a secret that's prompted her leaving and now the need to pop pills when necessary, Abby is apprehensive about going back home to Houma, and things are indeed awkward with her high school ex, Matt, who remained in Houma and became a cop.

Abby hits it off immediately with a Sunderland Corporation researcher, Alec Holland, but soon discovers that her own efforts, like those of Alec, are considered suspect by the townsfolk, who aren't happy with her feeling that it's best to shut down the swamp (where the locals make their living) as they investigate the flu. Abby has her hands full with a potential epidemic, a town full of hostiles, and a strange but alluring "Shape Of Water" romance with a creature borne from the swamp. SERIES REGULAR

[ALEC HOLLAND] Male, 30s, smart, a bit of a hot-head, determined, passionate about his work, Alec works for the Sunderland Corporation (which is apparently building a hospital in Houma) as an independent researcher, where he's discovered a connection between the swamp and the Houma flu. Alec hits it off immediately with CDC researcher and Houma native Abby Arcane, and the two of them are much alike, each wanting more out of life, interested in science, and not having much of a love life. Alec is not a big hit with the rest of Houma, however, who view him with suspicion if not open hostility.

Alec is determined to persevere despite the town's hostility, but it's clear that the Swamp has its own plans for Alec when he undergoes a strange transformation into a swamp-based creature with abilities he could never imagine. SERIES REGULAR

No word on which villain the Earth Elemental will be facing-off against just yet, but pour money is on either The Floronic Man, or Abby's deranged uncle Anton Arcane.

Tell us, are you looking forward to Swamp Thing? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

I might have missed it, but there is a DC universe streaming service coming? I don't think that can stand on it's own. Disney can with all their properties, but a single (WB) property is gonna work. Swamp Thing is cool tho

@MalseMarcel - Yes, and rumor has it that your subscription will also give access to a streaming comic service too.

Very excited to see DC build out its streaming service.

Teen Titans
The Doom Patrol
Young Justice: Outsiders
Harley Quinn Animated Series
Metropolis

There is even talk of syndicated shows like Lois & Clark, Smallville, The Batman Animated Series and others.

So this is the magic/supernatural show they were being tight lipped about. Good stuff! I hope they draw out the origin over the first season. I'd like to get a good grasp on Alec Holland before he becomes more than human.

Glad to hear we're finally getting a new live action series of the Green. I still have fond memories of this classic.

@KillerCroc357 - Right?! Hopefully, it'll be close to some good horror aspects as well as the superhero ones too.

The summaries indicate a need for a tremendous amount of backstory to be written before the explosion that will create Swamp Thing. Maybe DC thinks it can flashback bits of a developing relationship (Alec+Abby) or a diminishing one (Alec vs Sunderland). That means at least a two-hour movie to develop all the stuff and an explosion/ cliffhanger into episode two. Assuming an hour-long format that gives DC another hour to screw around while the swamp bubbles. End of Episode Two (hour 3) is some kind of human form develops in the swamp. That gives DC 3 maybe 4 hours before having to reveal ST. Maybe they can get enough backstory into the overall story to put all the necessary stuff into place but it's an ambitious plan. OR They start with the explosion and build the first two or three hours with flashbacks as we see ST start to form. Frankly, I'd love to see it happen but I think DC is out of its mind.

And, yes, I have been under a rock. Everything else in the DC lineup appears to be animated. And of no real interest to me.

Um...Anton Arcane is Abby's FATHER, not brother.

@Comedian666 - He's actually her uncle. I have no idea why I typed brother.

@L0RDbuckethead - I really hope not ... this one just looks like a huge sauge root ...

i think that a more "human-like" will do the trick ... with less CGI of course ...

Unfortunately it seems they are doing away with Alan Moore’s version due to all the emphasis put on Holland. This is a 30-something year spoiler but Holland is NOT Swamp Thing. It’s an elemental who thinks it’s Alec Holland.

I know all the love people have for Watchmen, but Swamp Thing (and Miracleman) stand head and shoulders with it.

It would be a shame to see this turn into a TV romance with some camp superhero clichés thrown in with no regard for the source material, like everything at CW and the god awful Gotham.
