SWAMP-THING's Premiere On The CW Drew Big Ratings Despite Airing On DC Universe In 2019

Swamp-Thing's controversial cancellation was, in many ways, the beginning of the end for DC Universe. However, the show might just get another chance based on these ratings for its premiere on The CW...

Much to the horror of DC Comics fans, Swamp-Thing was cancelled after just a single season on the soon-to-be defunct DC Universe streaming service. The show's budget was believed to be the primary reason for that, but #SaveSwampThing is a movement many people still rally behind.

As Halloween draws near, the James Wan-produced series has been given a second chance on The CW, with the premiere airing on the home of shows like The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow on Tuesday.

The 90-minute premiere was something of a ratings hit, with 1.1 million viewers tuning in.

As TV Line explains, that means Swamp-Thing "gave the network’s 8 o’clock hour its largest audience since May 19 (DC’s Stargirl), and the 90-minute period its best audience since Feb. 4. The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our ratings column do not reflect a show’s overall performance, given the increased use of delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms, plus out-of-home viewing."

In other words, the DC Comics series was likely an even bigger hit than this report reflects, and it's hard not to wonder whether this potentially opens the door to a second season happening on The CW or HBO Max. That would make fans happy, and there was clearly more story to tell after Swamp-Thing's season one finale.

Glad the show has so many fans and drew an audience, however I doubt that the same that happened for Stargirl will happen for this show.
It's not for theCW's typical audience and they have already released their upcoming schedule of shows.

@Blergh - Stargirl will become the next supergirl in terms of CW popularity.
I doubt CW fans will care for this, its not nearly as cheesy or pandering as most CW programing.

@heyy1 - Stargirl is like 40 times better than Supergirl, so there's that too

Bring it back for season 2 and link it to Constantine

@1AboveAll - ......and move them both into the hbo max Dark Justice series! With a recurring special guest from Lucifer!

@Manmarvel - man if only.
I could see a sort-of Constantine/JLD spin-off happening once Legends of Tomorrow ends.
Not under the Justice League Dark moniker mind you but surely somehow else.

@Blergh - hbo max has announced there will be something and it will have Constantine and Swampthing but no word if they are going with the ones we know and love. Lucifer is just my own wishful thinking. Hoping Constantine ends up in the final season, and then Lucifer shows up in more of the extended universe.

@Manmarvel - I'd certainly enjoy a Constantine set episode for Lucifer. Seeing them work together would be swell. But seeing how Tom Ellis played coy and unwilling to return for a final season and only backed down once Netflix put its foot down I doubt he's willing to work on a CW salary.

@Blergh - he was on the cw already. He interacted with Constantine during crisis. The upcoming project is a big budget series for hbo max.

@Manmarvel - is season 1 not finished? did season 1 end with a cliffhangar?
Manmarvel

@IcemanX - they cut 3 episodes off during production. Last episode has a tie up and the season leads to a "wait but there's more" but it felt rushed and chunky to what was a really good series up to that point.

Swamp Thing and Doom Patrol are the best DC shows ever, nothing comes close maybe Preacher at a push.

@marvel72 - Preacher was underwhelming as hell, a few good moments here and there, but they went about adapting it all wrong.

@soberchimera - That's why I said at a push, can't really say I like any DC show apart from the ones I mentioned and Adam West Batman and Linda Carter Wonder Woman, classic TV.

How exactly does this work on the CW with all the gore and profanity? I can't imagine they'd leave it all in unless there's an adult time slot I've never heard of.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Probably did the same they did for the 2014 airing of The Walking Dead on FOX. Edited out the swearing and violence in a convincing way

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Did you watch Dead Pixels? I found it hilarious but the CW bleeped every other word. It works better for a comedy though, so IDK how they'll handle it here.

How much did they censor the show? The first few episodes are especially brutal

Those news made me very happy. It proves the show's audience is still alive and kicking.

A revival might just be possible. Crossing fingers.
