Last night's episode of The Flash was the 100th instalment of the long-running series and it definitely delivered in terms of some big surprises and the inclusion of a lot of familiar faces from the past.

What we're focusing on here, though, are the biggest twists and turns, particularly that shocking ending and what it means for not only this season of the show but also the Scarlet Speedster's future in general. Whether you've watched the episode or are simply curious about what the landmark instalment delivered, you definitely need to check this out.

So, from surprise references to THAT twist, all you guys have to do is click on the "View List" button below to read this entire breakdown. Needless to say, SPOILERS obviously
follow...

Reverse-Flash Wiped The Twins Out Of Existence Too

We know that Eobard Thawne changed history when he travelled back in time and murdered Barry Allen's mother but that had a bigger impact on the future that any of us could have realised.

When the Scarlet Speedster confronts Eobard (disguised as Harrison Wells) in the past, the evil speedster mistakes Nora for Dawn before realising that his actions have changed the future enough so that neither Dawn nor Don
exist now. In the comics, they became the Tornado Twins and this is yet another victory for "Wells." However, those aren't the only speedsters he mentioned...

Other Speedsters

As he ponders who Nora could be, Thawne also talks about Jesse Chambers and Danica Williams.

For those of you who aren't familiar with those names, Chambers was Jesse Quick in the comics and the daughter of Johnny Quick and Liberty Belle. Her powers came from a special formula passed down by her father but the Jesse we know obviously hails from Earth-2.

As for Danica Williams, she took over as the Flash from Wally West in Justice League Beyond and hails from the 2040s. Like Nora, she once worked at the Flash Museum.

The Legion Of Superheroes

It's not clear whether this has already happened or is yet to come in Nora's future but Gideon mentions that XS was the fifth member recruited in the "rebooted" Legion of Superheroes.

We've obviously seen a very different Legion in Supergirl and as cool as it would be to see Nora teaming up with them, they're from a different Earth so who knows who the other members are!

Zoom Returns

We know that Zoom made duplicates of himself throughout time and while his "death" (which saw him transformed into the Black Flash) seemed pretty definitive, there is a chance he could return.

What's interesting about this episode is that when Barry crosses paths with him in the past, he sees Nora and realises that she too is a speedster who he can feed off. Chasing the Scarlet Speedster and XS through time, he's ultimately tackled by a Time Wraith but what if this leads to Zoom being able to race back into Team Flash's lives somewhere down the line? We'll see, I guess!

That Mysterious Language

Remember when Barry came out of the Speed Force and was covering the walls in some weird looking symbols? Well, that's the same text that we've seen in Nora's journal and it turns out that it's a secret language which can't be changed by anything that happens to the timeline.

In other words, even if Nora returns to the future and her father is alive and well thanks to her actions, she'll always have notes on what happened even after her memories are replaced by the new timeline solidifying. However, Sherloque Wells manages to translate some of them...

"The Timeline Is Malleable"

That's all we see from Sherloque's translation but it seems as if XS is definitely trying to change the timeline for reasons which aren't immediately clear. Common sense says that she wants to stop her father from ever going missing during the Crisis on Infinite Earths event which leads to Barry vanishing and never returning.

How will she do that?

Well, stealing his speed is one option and while that may seem like a somewhat random prediction, what happens next definitely points to that being a possible "solution" for the speedster...

Reverse-Flash Returns

Racing back to the future, Nora confronts someone in a prison cell...Harrison Wells, a.k.a. Reverse-Flash! It seems he's been pulling her strings from the start and may have neglected to mention exactly what he did to Barry Allen beyond just being his arch-nemesis.

Interestingly, Wells seems just as annoyed with XS after reading her messages from the past and while his motivations aren't clear, this must be the version we saw during the "Earth-X" crossover who once again had Wells' face. Could it be that something has happened to change the villain's outlook in order to make him a good guy or is he simply looking to regain his speed and freedom?

Crisis On Infinite Earths

The latest version of the newspaper article detailing the Flash's disappearance said this about the night Barry Allen vanishes during what is clearly going to be an adaptation of "Crisis on Infinite Earths."

"But in the years following the crisis, accounts only grew more contradictory. Some eyewitnesses remember dozens of other heroes present, including Green Arrow, Batwoman, and Elongated Man. Others remember heroes thought lost in time, like The Atom, or from other worlds, like Supergirl. Some even contend they saw Reverse Flash leading an army of 'shadow demons.'"

Shadow demons? That sounds a lot like Time Wraiths and it could be a sign that Reverse-Flash does indeed end up taking a heroic turn after the events of this season. Either way, it's clear that the villain has a future in the Arrowverse which could end up taking him to some surprising places.

What Comes Next?

It's hard to say but seeing as this "Crisis" doesn't take place until 2024, it's going to be a while before we get to see that newspaper article come to life. There's a chance it could be moved forward, of course, but for now, the mystery surrounding Wells and XS is surely going to take centre stage.

If we're lucky, the extremely underwhelming Cicada (who doesn't really warrant a mention here) will end up being replaced by Reverse-Flash for the remainder of the season. Time will tell!

Whoever directed last night's episode, get that person to direct more episodes. It was noticeably better than usual. Fantastic episode, aside from all of the horrific wigs and fake facial hair Wells wore. Cant wait for next weeks crossover.

@KWilly - Well it was the 100th episode so a lot more extra effort was put in this one to honor the show and also keep the plot of the Season advancing. It’s his third episode he directs too. (Season 3's “The Once and Future Flash” and Season 4's “Elongated Journey Into the Night” but this one obviously was the strongest)

Loved the episode and will post my full thoughts later on it as well as what is coming next year regarding the twist at the en and everything else. (Also my own thoughts about Arrow and Legends)

Nice episode. Great way of revisiting former main villains and defining monments of the series so far. I thought Nora was working for someone and Eobard was the most likely candidate. What's his plan? Will they switch out Cicada for him as the big bad of the season?
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 12/5/2018, 10:00 AM
@MCUKnight11 - No, Cicada is still the main villain because he is the most developed antagonist so far and he has defied all the norms of makes a Flash big bad: we know how he looks like when he took off his mask in the opening of episode 2, what he can do and how he does it and how’s he getting stronger without speed or using other's bodies and powers, what triggers him (fatherhood), where he works and why he wears a mask that makes him make that sound (lung injury) and who he used to be and why he hates metas and why is it that he frequents the hospital for a pseudo sympathetic reason that is not for his own gain but a promise to his niece. He isn’t selfish like Thawne who wanted to go home and escape from his crimes in the present, obsessed with speed and murder like E2 Zoom or godhood like Savitar nor ruling and re-shaping the way people think like DeVoe.

Cicada is grounded and relatable and is now at large and still stronger. Thawne was aware of him and likely still is and yet for all his genius he still can’t come up with a way to stop the worst and most dangerous meta serial killer in history that got away. (It was actually Nora who came up with a decent plan to attempt it) He is also not the David Hersh version they know which makes him even more unpredictable.

Thawne is playing a Hannibal Lector role right now like in the Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs movies with Nora (who would be Clarice, Barry would be Will from Red Dragon) because he is “coaching” Nora and this will impact the future Seasons but Cicada is still the priority. Him being earlier and someone else changed the game since the start.

@NinnesMBC - Finally, as awesome as it is to have Tom Cavanagh play RF we would go back to having once again an speedster villain after all the complains about E2 Zoom and Savitar. It would be a step backwards specially when we have seen Thawne lose many times in the past (S1, Legends S2 and Crisis on Earth-D), it’s best to stick with the non-speedsters for longer unless they come up with a new type of speedster villain.

Am I the only one who thought Sherloque might be RF in disguise when he said "Clever girl" to Nora at the end of the episode, seeing as Wells did earlier on?

And it wasn't really much out of the norm, pretty basic episode IMO.

If Thawne coming back in time wiped Dawn and Don out of the timeline, then it confirms what I've said since season 1 episode 1. The whole Arrowverse is a Flashpoint.

Reverse Flash confuses the hell out of me. Didn't they get rid of him for good on Legends of Tomorrow S2? But the person Nora met at the end is Reverse Flash/Thawne? And didn't he get erased by Eddie shooting himself? Continuity is so goddamned confusing?
Let's just make it up along the way! WTF?!?!

I genuinely thought when Gideon referenced Nora to be "The newest recruit to the Legion of..." that it was going to say Doom and not Superheroes. I have my suspicions intensified when the end of the episode showed her and Thawne in some kind of cooperation for a while now. It wouldn't be a stretch to find out she's been told by Thawne in 2049, that he can save her Father and nothing she does will matter if she doesn't do stuff for him, but she's still desperately looking for alternative ways which would explain the thing she learned about time travel being "Malleable".

Honestly, with 2 seasons of villains pretending to be heroes and thawne constantly returning with new faces to blend in as a normal person, I'm less like Barry and more like Joe being suspicious about every single actor that walks on camera. I don't care who they are in the Comics or their backstories.

@ChrisDawg - my first thought was Legion of Doom as well. Legion of Superheroes didn’t cross
my mind until I read it on this site

Good 100th episode, wonder what will happen for the 150th and luckily the 200th if they reach Season 10. Judging by the newspaper in the time vault since S1, it's almost a certainty.

Ralph and Sherloque already seem to be on the same page as the detective duo when they were developing Cicada's profile.

Nora's plan was solid and I liked seeing them put up the exact dates of the episodes when they aired in real life as the points of destination.

I wonder if Cisco really finally fixed the Flash ring for real to store up the new suit inside of it for good or just for this special ocassion and next time it'll be back on the usual place outside the ring? If he did it then he beated Harry to it back to when he said he'd tried it to with Reverse-Flash's in S2, now that he's average after his brain was rebooted it is unlikely.

The "new adjustments" to the suit to make it fit in were basically the fixed cowl, now it looks better.

I couldn't tell if whether or not Nora used her reversing time ability to hel them escape the Time Wraith after she took the piece of the Savitar suit, it just looked like they easily escaped from it.

Got chills from the S2 scenes. Barry saved the situation with S2 Harry and even set up the stage for him to go looking for Jesse after they lost previously, now it makes sense from where and why Harry got the idea of looking for her back then with her frequency and dead zones, S5 Barry gave him a clue.

Supposedly that scene Nora watched of S2 Iris comforting Barry after he gave up his speed and others were unused footage of S2.

That E2 Zoom that got caught by the Time Wraith must've been one of his remnants, it was still a close call.

I liked how Thawne from S1 always gets played by each Barry that returns from the future, being forced to help him and always falling for the same trick of not having any other chance to secure his future of going home unless he does what future versions of Barry ask him to do. Unless they spoil him that he doesn't and what happens later (Barry stopping him from returning, Eddie erasing him, Flashpoint revival, defeated by the Legends etc) it'll be fine.

He mentioned other female speedsters while trying to deduce who Nora was: Jesse Chambers (Harry's daughter basically), Libby Lawrence (Liberty Belle) and Danica Williams. But since he addressed Nora as Dawn before being corrected it seems he was refering to people he knew from the original timeline before he changed everything. Could be a thread for later.

For all his smart and genius he sure never came up either with a way to stop the original Cicada, his remark to Nora's plan said it all.

S1 scenes had some of the same chills like the ones in S2 with Thawne almost finding them in the time vault, the scene between him and pre-Vibe!Cisco was chilling but hilarious too.

Gideon was SO going into Legion of Super Heroes territory with Nora until Barry cut her off. No way that isn't the next proper spin-off show.

The same doctor that is caring after Cicada's niece in the present was there when Thawne and Barry arrived after the particle accelerator exploded, that's where her own apprehension to all of this slowly began.

Cicada stated that his open wound with the shard inside was making him stronger in previous episodes not just physically but also with his dagger so if he was able to call it back from freaking outer space I doubt there's anything that could keep the dagger away from him, even interdimensional distance between Earths. The whole point of the fight was to prove that their connection is too strong to be broken. Unless they try do what the doctor has been wanting to do, to patch up that wound. But his power is growing and if the dampener worked only for a few seconds on the dagger I doubt metahuman cuff would get the job done either in stopping the big bad. It might stop him as a meta, but the metatech dagger?

Maybe if they had thrown the dagger along with the dark matter dampener they developed into space it could've worked. Willing to consider that flaw in the episode. They could also try using DeVoe's chair with the force field to be honest to keep them separated.

Killer Frost being their current trump card against him because she came out from cry-therapy and not dark matter could lead down to explore the origins of the metas, could tie up with her dad's fixation on Khione. If Cicada really wants to end all the metahumans, which is a literal huge goal, he might as well go looking for the root of it all. Maybe another travel to the past is in store.

So Thawne in the future developed the time language and has been using it with Nora since S4 after Crisis on Earth-X from Iron Heights to stay in touch. I am seeing him as fulfilling a role like Hannibal Lecter, in which Nora is Clarice Starling and Barry would be Will Graham from the Red Dragon.

"The timeline is malleable", a lot is lef to unlock from her journal.
