Within the past several months, there have been reports that a script for apotential third
X-Files film was in the works and, if I remember correctly, it's been none other than David Duchovny who has been dishing out the information regarding those "rumors. Now, the
X-Files alum is talking more about the status of the rumored third film in the franchise.
“There is no deal at this point. It’s something I would do in a second and I know Chris [Carter] and Gillian [Anderson] would be interested. It’s really just a matter of generating interest in Fox, then getting a script and getting us all together.”
As you may remember, it took quite some time to get the second film into production. Add to that the lack of box office performance, taking in just under $21 million at the domestic box office, and one has to wonder if there is still any interest in the franchise (aside from the hardcore fan-base of course).
When asked about what he'd like to see happen in the film, Duchovny had this to say:
“I think it should go back to the heart of the series with the mythology."
If (and that's a big if) this project ever gets traction, I agree with Duchovny in that it needs to get back to it's roots, back to what made the television series so fun to watch. Towards the end of the series and in to the films, it lost it's "oomph" and just didn't compare tot he series when it first began airing. I'm not holding my breath on this project and I'd be quite surprised to see the project movie any further than just talk.
