Mulder and Scully are perhaps one of the most iconic double acts in the history of television, however, Gillian Anderson has recently confirmed that she will be leaving the role and The X-Files behind after the newest season of the hit sci-fi franchise.

Series creator Chris Carter has offered his take on Anderson's departure and what it will mean for the future of the series in a Reddit AMA:

"For me, the show has always been Mulder & Scully. So the idea of doing the show without her isn’t something I’ve ever had to consider. Was her character given a proper goodbye? I think you will want to sit down and watch the series finale very carefully.”

Fans of the series were stunned when Anderson made the announcement in October saying that season 11 "will be the last" for her. In an interview with TV Insider, the actress reaffirmed her position and expressed a desire to work on other projects such as American Gods and The Fall.

This isn't the first time in the show's history that the duo has been split up, as David Duchovny famously quit as a series regular in the later seasons of the original X-files

Despite all of this Carter has suggested that the show could continue without Scully, however, it remains to be seen how longtime fans of the series will react to this and nothing has been confirmed for the future of the series at this stage.

The X-Files will return tonight on Fox and will air on channel 5 in the UK.

What do you guys think? Are you sad to see Gillian Anderson leave the series, and could The X-Files possibly continue without Scully?

I was really into this show during its heyday and both characters are synonymous with the name. I think if they work the story right they can leave the door open to a new duo to take over for a new generation of stories to be told.

@smgmayhem - they tried it back in the day with "new" agents...it didn't work.

I always enjoyed the over arching extraterrestrial aspect in some of the story lines and I hope they lean more towards that direction for the future given recent discoveries in that field of study.

Last season was ok, but in the end disappointing. Will watch this one eventually, with like 50 different shows i need to catch up on, but without her...I don't see how the show can go on. Her and Duchovny work well together, so that will suck if they continue with him.

They can do a spin off I suppose, but will be sad without the two if they both are gone imo.

NO!!!!!!’ I get it Mulder left back in the day but now way they do this show without Scully . He was a dope for leaving back then to. They should end it properly this season and bow out with both of their stories wrapped up. I’m down if she’s out .

As much as I'll miss her, I think for her character it has to go in a different direction. I've been watching it since Season 1 and even the "bad seasons" so I'll feel bad about her not being apart of the show anymore.

Still, in order for the X-Files to be an "ongoing" experience, one of them have to make a sacrifice. I would rather it be Dana Scully more than Fox Mulder. We need his grizzled character.

Nevertheless:
