Though the current fourth season of HBO's True Detective has received mostly positive feedback from critics and viewers alike, not everyone is on board with some of the creative decisions - including the show's creator Nic Pizzolatto, who had a hand in writing all previous episodes of the series.

Though the post has since been removed, Pizzolatto - who is credited as an executive producer on season 4 - made it clear that he is not involved in any creative capacity with Night Country, referring to the plot points that connect to the show’s acclaimed first season as “so stupid.” When a fan responded, he added: “I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else. Can’t blame me.”

Night County is (or appears to be, at least) the first season of True Detective to include explicitly supernatural elements, with the ghost of one character seemingly being revealed to be the father of Matthew McConaughey's Rustin Cohle from season 1.

There are several other connections to season 1, including the reveal that the Tsalal research facility is funded by a company called Tuttle United (Tuttle was the name of the Yellow King-worshipping family Cohle and Martin Hart were investigating), and the spirals... lots and lots of spirals!

New showrunner Issa López, who co-wrote and directed all six episodes of the new season, was asked about Pizzolatto’s comments during an interview with Vulture, and gave a very classy response.

“I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. That’s his prerogative. I wrote this with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it. And it is a reinvention, and it is different, and it’s done with the idea of sitting down around the fire, and [let’s] have some fun and have some feelings and have some thoughts. And anybody that wants to join is welcome.”

Despite mostly positive feedback, Night Country has been "review bombed" on Rotten Tomatoes, and López took to X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the season premiere to call out the trolls.

“So, if you liked last night’s [episode] of [True Detective: Night Country], and have a Rotten Tomatoes account, maybe head over there and leave an audience review?” Lopez wrote to her followers. “The bros and hardcore fanboys of [Season 1] have made it a mission to drag the rating down, and it’s kind of sad, considering all the 5 star ones.”

"When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice."

Man these female writers are getting out of control, they really dont give af if its your show or if you’re the intended audience. They’re just going to do whatever tf they want 😂

@Matchesz - That's just writers man, look at Alex Kurtzman ruining Star Trek. You're either a hired gun who makes studio mandated garbage, or you write what you want and hope it resonates. No need to be sexist about it.

@UncleHarm1 - i’m not even trying to be sexist. But this reminded me right away of when Jessica Gao forced Kevin to let her do stuff he didnt want in she hulk or she’d walk away. It’s the entitlement that gets me.

@Matchesz - That's weird, because you are being blatantly sexist. You mention entitlement, but expecting "toys" to remain in the hands of "boys" after they are done playing with them is such deep entitlement that my irony meter exploded.

@Matchesz - 🙄 Every writer, male or female, are going to do whatever they want. Don’t be a sexist moron.

@ginjaninja74 - If I don't hate women but I don't agree with feminist culture am I still sexist?
UncleHarm1
UncleHarm1 - 2/5/2024, 2:04 PM
@Matchesz - Boiling down feminist culture to just entitled females who are "out of control" is sexist, yeah.

@UncleHarm1 - Labeling people is super cool these days, no wonder why humans are going to be replaced by AI. cant express an individual thought these days without the agent smiths coming out the woodwork calling you sexist lol

@UncleHarm1 - this country was founded by men. Every other country in the world is run by men. That phone in your hand and car that you drive were invented by men. All our favorite classic Marvel and DC characters were created by men. But that “girl power” moment in avengers endgame was completely cringe. And this chick taking a show that was created by a man and putting her girl power crap in it makes it suck just like that scene in endgame. Men rule, women drool. What was the last thing invented by a woman?

@HammerLegFoot - season 1 and 3 are really good.

@JobinJ - I Enjoyed 2 for what it's worth. It was never going to top the first, but the talent involved was exceptional. I thought 3 was decent. Not checked this one out yet, but Foster is always worth a watch.

@HammerLegFoot - S1 is one of the best series I’ve ever seen. Didn’t like two, very different feel. S3 was really good, just not as good as S1. I’ve been enjoying S4 a lot, but it tends to meander a bit, especially with only 6 episodes.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 2/5/2024, 8:27 AM
@JobinJ - season 2 ends so much better than 3. S3 has the worst resolution it's ruined the entire season for me. 2 gets better as it goes.
JobinJ
JobinJ - 2/5/2024, 8:33 AM
@McMurdo - I agree the resolution in 3 was a let down

FireandBlood

Show should’ve been a limited series that stopped at 1, because even Pizzolatto dropped the ball with subsequent seasons.
Ginley

@FireandBlood -

The third season is perfectly fine, with an amazing performance from Ali and a surprisingly strong one from Dorff.

It's a million times better than this season.
John75
John75 - 2/5/2024, 7:35 AM
@Ginley - bullshit, this season is great so far with really strong characters and build up of suspense. I hope they stick the landing like the first season. 92% on rotten tomatoes. Better results than season 2 and 3!
McMurdo
McMurdo - 2/5/2024, 8:29 AM
@John75 - how have Danvers and Navarro progressed in any way 4 eps in?
Elle79
Elle79 - 2/5/2024, 10:47 AM
@FireandBlood - Season 3 was very good, and far better than the current bad fan-fiction Season 4, which of course critics feel compelled to say is amazing (it's not) because of a female director and two female leads (one of which is not a good actress at all).

“The bros and hardcore fanboys of [Season 1] have made it a mission to drag the rating down, and it’s kind of sad, considering all the 5 star ones.”
Or maybe people just didn’t like it. I always love how it’s a conspiracy when they don’t get the ratings they want, but when it’s all positive and all good there’s nothing to see here. It’s just weird that people think you’re the scum of the earth if you don’t like a movie or show. Opinions on pop culture is what we base peoples quality on now? Pathetic.
John75
John75 - 2/5/2024, 7:43 AM
@DudeGuy - but you have to admit there is a group online that hate it simply because it’s a female led show. That will not give it a chance because of it. I don’t particularly care about being progressive for the sake of being progressive but a good show is a good show and TV like this and Fargo with strong female leads are worth making and watching. I rather watch women in something like this than Desperate Housewives or Sex in The City.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 2/5/2024, 7:51 AM
@John75 - you just countered you own first point with your second point by bring up that Fargo has had a female lead in almost every season and does not get the treatment that this is getting.
DudeGuy
DudeGuy - 2/5/2024, 7:56 AM
@John75 - I actually don’t have to admit anything because I know people have different opinions than me. Some of my favorite movies have low ratings on RT and I don’t cry about it. I just accept it didn’t work for them and move on. Has nothing to do with women. What I’m talking about has nothing to do with women. Every time something comes out now and doesn’t do as well as they were hoping it’s just a lame excuse after lame excuse and pointing the finger at everyone else but themselves. But while we’re on the topic of women, fine, You saw it with She Hulk. Absolute dog shit show and they blamed everyone else other than those who were responsible for making that trash.
John75
John75 - 2/5/2024, 8:10 AM
@DudeGuy - but this show is working. It has great reviews, looks great with top notch performances. They have nothing to excuse. The show was targeted by people that had a problem with women as leads, simple. Everyone I know who is watching it is enjoying it. She-hulk was exactly like the Byrne run, people who complain about it didn’t seem to know anything about it and it was particularly funny when they parodied those type of complaints in the show that mimicked real responses at the time like being a woman taking over a man’s role or that she was naturally better than Bruce at certain things.
John75
John75 - 2/5/2024, 8:17 AM
@Ryguy88 - not really Fargo set the precedent for being a female led series because of the original movie but this is the first True Detective with main characters that are female and the response from some of these so called “fans” are nonsensical. And as for Pizzolatto he’s probably pissed off that this new show runner is doing a better job than he did with season 2 and 3
Vigor
Vigor - 2/5/2024, 8:25 AM
@DudeGuy - damn. I thought she hulk was a lot of fun haha
Everyone points to the twerking though. Maybe I'm immune to twerking
McMurdo
McMurdo - 2/5/2024, 8:30 AM
@John75 - it's got nothing to do with the women. Mare of Easttown is brilliant. Issa Lopez can't write dialogue let alone progress the plot 4 episodes in.
DudeGuy
DudeGuy - 2/5/2024, 8:32 AM
@Vigor - see how subjective it all is? And the twerking was far from that shows biggest problem
John75
John75 - 2/5/2024, 8:57 AM
@McMurdo - hasn’t progressed? Jesus how many plot points do you need. Its pacing feels exactly like the first season and the end of episode one was bloody terrifying. And yes, Mare of Easttown was brilliant . That needs another season! There really has been a lot of well made shows like this in the past few years. I know she shared the lead with Renner but have you seen Elizabeth Olsen in Wind River? That was another great thriller. Man, that brutal final shoot out was amazing.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 2/5/2024, 9:20 AM
@John75 - Mare of Easttown was another female-led HBO police series that was universally acclaimed by both critics and audiences, I don't think there's a conspiracy going on, I think this season might just not be that good
John75
John75 - 2/5/2024, 9:38 AM
@soberchimera - again Mare was an original show with no previous audience, True Detective first 3 seasons male leads, new season female leads, rave reviews but certain groups can’t accept it on that basis, it obvious.
Elle79
Elle79 - 2/5/2024, 10:45 AM
@John75 - I'm a woman, and Season 4, other than Jodie Foster's acting, is garbage.

Stop virtue-signaling just because it's a woman writer. If you think this season even holds a candle to Season 3, you're either not being honest or you're on serious drugs
