Damon Lindelof's WATCHMEN TV Series On HBO Will Be "What The Fans Need, Not What They Want"

It's no secret that Damon Lindelof's Watchmen won't be adapting the comic book by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons and now the latter has shared his thoughts on what fans should - and shouldn't - expect...

In the past, Damon Lindelof has made it clear that he has no desire to adapt Watchmen for television; instead, he wants to remix it and fans remain confused about whether that means it's a sequel, reboot, or just a totally new story set in the same universe. Presumably, it won't tie into Doomsday Clock in any way and with HBO ordering the show to series, we'll hopefully hear some official details very soon.

For now, Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons has shed some light on what we should expect and he claims that Lindelof's vision for the property is "exciting, entertaining, and absolutely worthwhile."

That's high praise indeed and unlike Alan Moore, Gibbons has never shied away from getting involved with what DC Comics chooses to do with Watchmen. Deadline goes on to note that the plan is for the series to "subvert the basic idea of what it means to be a superhero," while adding that while Gibbons believes fans of the original will like it, they may also need to temper their expectations for the show.

In fact, he says it could end up being "what the fans need, not what they want." It goes without saying that most probably wanted a direct adaptation of the comics which played out over the course of a few seasons but Lindelof wants to do something new and that's...admirable, I guess? We'll just have to wait and see but feel free to share your thoughts on these remarks in the comments section down below.

My expectations are low on this, so I guess that means it'll be good....hmmmmmmm

@Antoin - But if your expectations are to low how will they be subverted! :)

@Antoin - That's how "I" look at these films. And I enjoy every one of them (not enough to see them all twice, but most).

I don't want to have any expectations over a film I have no control over.

@Antoin - ditto. It’s both cute and sad how they reference the last genuine success to come from DC films, ‘The Dark Knight.’ And at the same time what a very odd thing to say to any fan base of any commercial project. “Welp, we can’t seem to get right what they like about these characters (or what these characters are even about, tbh), so let’s just give them what they really need. An open ended narrative that we can make for years and years to come.”

i think it would be fun (still maybe a little too confusing) i they would cast Patrick Wilson as Older Night Owl

That's an... interesting way of describing this show.

It's probably gonna be good but not faithful to the source material.

@BlindWedjat - well i mean it is a sequel to the comic. Technically both faithful and not faithful since everything happened but its following new people.

Do fans really want the comic to play out over the course of multiple seasons? Im sorry but that just sounds awful. Youd get this show so ridiculously stretched out youd probably forget what the story started out as by the end. If you want a direct adaptation then dont even make it a series. Make it a miniseries with however many issues the comic had being the total number of episodes.

@Origame - The purist idea (way back when) was for something like a 6 hour miniseries. And I think there's enough material to do that.

But Snyder's film sucked away any enthusiasm people may have for that since he slavishly recreated the panels that everyone wanted to see slavishly recreated. Because the film's biggest divergences were on the subtle side (even if they were vastly tonally different), any future remake has to make some really terrible choices. Either do something visually and narratively different to justify making a series at all, or retread so much of the film just to get closer to Moore and Gibbons' original.

(And I like Watchmen a lot, but we're bordering on idolatry as it is.) When there are so many other things that could be adapted, just doing another pass on a story whose biggest legacy seems to be how badly it was misunderstood and misapplied by the broader industry isn't the best use of people's time, money, talent, or effort.

@Spock0Clock - But just imagine a good adaptation that nails both the look and the tone/spirit of the comics... *cries*

I know it's '80's DC apples and '00's Marvel oranges, but... holy shit why couldn't we get a live action adaptation of JMS's Supreme Power run instead of more Watchmen?

So much potential there, and most of it squandered, but perfect for a moderately-budgeted adult-themed TV ensemble franchise.
