Despite the fact that 2009's Watchmen movie is a modern masterpiece, a reboot is now in the works at HBO. While there's no denying that the classic comic book series is well-suited to television, it's pretty obvious that there's not enough material to fill out more than a couple of seasons. Well, HBO President Casey Bloys has addressed that and made it clear that we're not getting a straight up adaptation here.
"I don't want to talk too much about it, but Damon is thinking about it in a way exactly as you describe it," Bloys said when IGN suggested that the main Watchmen story is suitable for only a single season of TV rather than an ongoing series. "Which is, how do you take the material and derive from it a TV show, without making it a literal translation?" So, does that mean adding new material?
"I think so, yes," Bloys responded, adding: "Damon is one of the smartest, most passionate, most thorough writers I've ever worked with so he's really thinking about this in amazing ways. Again, I don't want to talk about the details of it, but when you sit with him and you see the way his mind works it's really kind of amazing." That's interesting but it could rub some fans up the wrong way.
It sounds like the Watchmen TV series could adapt elements of Before Watchmen and generally just expand on certain scenes and moments to make the show last much longer, while also adding new content never thought of by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. How do you guys feel about this news?
