Watchmen Fan Art Winner Announced

Watchmen Fan Art Winner Announced

With almost 100 entries, the Watchmen Fan Art contest was another HUGE success, producing some really awesome art from our talented and creative CBM readers. Thank you all for contributing. It was REALLY fun to see the excellent art!

Once again, we agonized over all the submissions--taking into account what each unique bit of artwork offered. All were wonderful in their own way. Skill, Style, Uniqueness, Theme, Humor, Action, etc, were all things we took into account. It's never easy to declare a "winner" when all of you deserve kudos.

The Grand Prize Winner will receive The Complete Watchmen Motion Comic on DVD and $200.

Grand Prize Winner

Bon “Bijous” Scott - Style, Simplicity, Meaning ("lost panel" theme).

I drew this picture for the contest because it represents the single moment in the myth of the Watchmen story that starts it all. To me, this picture is like a “lost panel” that takes place between panels four and five on page five of the original graphic novel. In panel four, Rorschach looks at the Comedian’s button and realizes what it is. In panel five, Rorschach’s detective skills kick in and he looks up to see where the button came from. My piece is the unseen split second between these two panels when he realizes that a fellow hero has been murdered.

Without this moment, there’s no story. There’s no Watchmen graphic novel. There’s no Watchmen movie. Rorschach figures out what he’s looking at and decides that it’s important enough to investigate. The rest is, well, history.

I based my colors on the original colors of John Higgins. I also liked Rorschach’s “hurm” grunt, so I added it here, three pages before it appears in the graphic novel.

Bijous' artistic influences: Richard Corben, Moebius, Sam Keith, Art Adams.

The other artists listed below can expect to receive a Watchmen prize pack which will include one, some or all of these items:
  • Watchmen T-Shirt
  • Watchmen Smiley Button
  • Watchmen Poster
  • Watchmen Sticker
  • Watchmen Tattoo

Jenny Bornen - Most Humorous

Xin Wang - Most Unique Style

Luis Uzcategui - Best Use of Color

Kenneth Sanderson - Coolest Scenario

Andy Black - Sheer Coolness

Jeremy Roberts - Coolest Use of Multiple Watchmen

Amanda Haas - Most Sexy

David Zuckerman - Best Action

If you didn't get a prize this time, keep trying! We have several fan art contests coming up with even more cool themes, AND we will soon be starting a Fan Fic contest for you writers!

Just curious if anyone else picked up on this?

This Rorschach picture has been around for years.

And the fact that Luis Uzcategui (Best Use of Color) piece has an uncanny likesness to the above piece.

All the artwork here was fantastic but I agree with the picks of the number one winner and the runners up! It was just a lot of fun for me to do the work for my entry in this contest.

Congrats to all!

Actually, please don't get me wrong on this guys but i find that if everyone had "described" they're work and elaborated on the reason for it, this might not have necessarily been the winner. Lets be honest here, there were a lot of "roarschach" drawings and i think most would agree that judging by "coolness of concept", Andy Black had a cooler concept for a "roarschach piece". What made Bijous prevail is obviously his description.

No offence Bijous, i very much like the work you did. It is a beautifull piece and you certainly did deserve to win as much as anybody else here but you also deserved to be judged on the "coolness" of your work of art and not the "coolness" of the "meaning" behind it. I just hate to be the one raining on the parade here, it's simply not my style but i feel it had to be mentionned.

I'm not at all "peeved" for not winning, i very much enjoyed this contest as well as the others and can't wait to participate in the next ones. But to be "fair" to everyone, it could be cool to come up with a different way to submit our drawings.

I'd like to know what everybody would think of the idea to have a "fan art contest" TAB or PAGE where we could submit our drawing ourselves just like we do for an article on our own fansite. There could be a box for the description and one for the title and everything. That would also eliminate e-mailing problems and i feel it would also have been very amazing to read EVERYONE'S explanation behind their work! It would have brought alot more depth to the competition :) What do you guys think???

Gun Fighter, I did notice that but others have done similar.

Here is a pic of Silver Surfer (from the from the front page of a google search no less)

And here's John Perezs entry

Shaman, I think thats a great idea. Would that mean you could comment on everyones artwork individually?
Bijous
Bijous - 3/11/2009, 12:02 PM
Thanks, DDD!

Hey, Shaman, I don't think you're necessarily wrong. I wanted whatever advantage I could get in the contest, which is why I decided to base my drawing on this "moment" in the story and why I sent a description along with it. Just in case the judges were not super familiar with the graphic novel.

I can say that it's totally my idea and that the only reference I used was a picture of me with a t-shirt wrapped around my face!
Shaman
Shaman - 3/11/2009, 12:09 PM
Well you did a stellar job Bijous! Congrats :))

Thanks TheAnswer!!! And YES!!! TOTALLY!!!! Each drawing would have it's own "thread" to comment on, kinda :)) To me that just sounds like a kick ass idea!!!

I was thinking a week ago it would be good to comment on the entries individually. Maybe the powers at be will listen to your wise words.

Yohon Kalic I'm not trying to kick up dust like the previous hulk vs. contest but seriously look at the details in the Rorschach pictures. While both backgrounds are different everything about the 2 Rorschach's is identical. One is simply a little lighter in contrast and that's about it, and the angle that Rorschach is standing on is different..
The rorschach pattern on the mask is the same, tiny details in the coat, the way the coat ties together and is blowing in the wind is the same, and the hand gesture is exactly the same.
My only point is, did he copy and paste that Rorschach into his background, or trace/recreate it illustrator or photoshop?

As an artist, little things like this get to me, it's one thing to use something as a reference but to have a character that is for the most part identical as another persons art is just downright sloppy, unimaginative and lazy.

And don't try to jump at the fact I'm jaded, I did not enter this contest or the last. So I have no reason and am in no way jealous cause I didn't win. Just stating someone won for copying the main focal point of another persons illustration.
gunfighter
gunfighter - 3/11/2009, 3:51 PM
TheAnswer, good point, but they don't look that identical. And it wasn't like he was copying a picture of Dr. Manhattan, he was using the silver surfer as a reference.

Also, John Perezs didn't win, did he?

@gunfighter

i have to agree with you 101% RE Luis' piece. I joined, didnt win anything and dont necessarily agree with the winning pieces (except for a few like Jenny's coz she always dishes out cool and funny pieces) but i didnt say anything.

But Luis shouldnt win based on Gunfighter's findings. Its an exact copy... probably a minimal paintover even of that existing piece. You can see how Luis messed up below the flowing belt. The original piece showed it was a shadow but he didnt know what to do with it so it became sort of a extension of his top.

For future contests, i think it should be better if comments were allowed on each entry. Site mods might not find out about stuff like gunfighter did and would help make things fair for everybody.

Ive also heard a few members saying that the winners were not as cool as the other entries and i have to agree (no disrespect to the winners). I gave a lot of time and effort on my piece but i knew i wouldnt win coz there were a lot of much much cooler entries. I think it would also help if judges were to have guideliness like :

coolness - %
artistry - %
skill - %
composition - %
etc..... to keep things fair and objective

Thanks Shaman for elaborating and affirming what I meant to say here RE: the "description" factor.

But kudos to the winner for being a good strategist ;)
