Darren Aronofsky, once hinted to direct the new Batman movie, will instead helm the Watchmen film based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' super-hero tour de force comic series.

Ain't It Cool News says Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) will work from David Hayter's script. Hayter, who has a writing credit on the first X-Men movie, was to direct at one point but the studio sought a tried-and-true director, the site said.

Aronofsky will begin on Watchmen as soon as he finishes The Fountain.
