First Reviews For MARVEL's AGENT CARTER Surface

FROM FORBES--------

Thanks to the benefits of a well constructed main character that shows clear signs of capability from both a personal and professional standpoint, and a series that has very clear behind the scenes support across all fronts from both network and studio, ?Agent Carter has managed to raise Marvel’s game significantly with its first episode......

FROM NY DAILY NEWS-----

Agent Peggy Carter is a marvelous addition to the cool women characters now prowling TV screens. And “Marvel’s Agent Carter” is a strong second show from ABC’s partnership with Marvel Comics. There’s plenty of action to go with snappy grownup dialogue, and Peggy is the kind of dame you won’t be able to resist watching.....

FROM PITTSBURG POST------

 “Agent Carter” is a welcome, interesting entry, a far cry from the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” large ensemble and a welcome opportunity to put a woman front and center. In addition, the 1940s production design is admirably detailed and deep, from costumes to computer-generated sets and backgrounds.....

FROM COMICBOOK.COM----

Agent Carter brings a new and welcome female perspective to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and the creative people behind the series have done well to hone in on it as an identifying theme. The top-tier talent of writers and directors provides strong characters, which are played well by their actors, and fun, sometimes quite memorable, action sequences. There’s no need to wait for Captain Marvel, Agent Carter is the hero you’ve been waiting for....

FROM SF GATE-----

Gosh, “Marvel’s Agent Carter” is a heck of a lot of fun, and if that statement feels a bit old-fashioned, well, it fits the sprightly period piece about a female secret agent fighting bad guys and sexism just after World War II. Atwell is terrific in the title role, as capable in the efficient, unflappable skin of Peggy....

SYNOPSIS: Years before Agent Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. team swore to protect those who cannot protect themselves from threats they cannot conceive, there was Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell, Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier), who pledged the same oath but lived in a different time when women weren’t recognized as being as smart or as tough as their male counterparts. But no one should ever underestimate Peggy. It’s 1946 and peace has dealt Peggy a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy finds herself stuck doing administrative work when she would rather be back out in the field; putting her vast skills into play and taking down the bad guys. But she is also trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life, Steve Rogers – aka Captain America. When old acquaintance Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, Captain America: The First Avenger) finds himself being framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons to anyone willing to pony up the cash, he contacts Peggy – the only person he can trust – to track down those responsible, dispose of the weapons and clear his name. He empowers his butler, Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World), to be at her beck and call when needed to help assist her as she investigates and tracks down those responsible for releasing these weapons of mass destruction. But Jarvis, who is a creature of habit and sticks to a rigid daily routine, is going to have to make some major life changes if he’s going to be able to keep up with Peggy. If caught going on these secret missions for Stark, Peggy could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison – or worse. And as she delves deeper into her investigation, she may find that those she works for are not who they seem, and she might even begin to question whether Stark is as innocent as he claims.

I hope this is good, but the cliche "sexism of the 40s" aspect makes it look cheesy.

"The best man for the job...is a woman"

That was actually in a promo. So bad.

"I hope this is good, but the cliche "sexism of the 40s" aspect makes it look cheesy."

@aknightinarkham

1) Not a cliche. Sexism in the 40's was VERY real and present, and it's kind of the entire point of this series. There'd literally be nothing interesting about this show if it didn't show Peggy struggling against the established misogyny. For one thing, it makes for better drama. For another, it wouldn't be historically accurate otherwise and it'd be an awful job (and a borderline fire-able offense) on the writer's part to omit that.

2) The entire point of this show is that it's a period piece. And that usually means that things are going to be intentionally cheesy. Just like Captain America: The First Avenger. That's kind of the entire tone to this character and that time period. There's no way for Marvel to avoid this, nor should they.

For what it's worth, I actually agree that that specific promo tagline was awful - no creativity or imagination at all.

That said, random promos usually don't dictate the quality of a show. I'm not too worried about it.

Lol did you copy and paste this thing? And the show smells and looks like stanky ass. I want nothing to do with it. Hell, God himself could come down and tell me the show is tots-muhgots and I still wouldn't give the slightest [frick].

@SauronsBANE

Look, I realize sexism needs to be there, it is the 40s. I've just seen that so many times, it's not interesting in the least.I know it needs to be there, but if this show is about Peggy struggling with sexism, more than it is with her just being a badass spy, then this is when this show has failed.

You do realise that there are a lot of non superhero comic books out there right?
thebearjew

im aware of that but it just seems baffling to me that marvel would put agent shows on rather than the superhero stuff i know daredevils coming but feels like its taking a while

@thebearjew

Why should Marvel limit themselves to only doing superhero stuff? If they have a good idea for a tv series that doesn't involve superheroes, I say they should feel free to take that opportunity. And if that's not peoples thing, than no problem since we have 5 marvel superhero shows coming to netflix.

"I've just seen that so many times"

aknightinarkham - Pfff I've seen at least 10 Batman movies in my lifetime, including live-action and direct-to-DVD carton movies. Doesn't stop me from still enjoying him.

Seriously notice the guys with DC Avatars bashing this. What a coincidence.

ThePowerCosmic - honestly I don' think AC will be successful enough to get another season but who knows? Conceptually I can get behind it.

I mean we can't have enough girl-centered superhero/comic book shows/films as far as I'm concerned.

"I have an idea why Marvel is not focusing on Superpower Heros for TV. Superhero powers take big money to make look good on a TV show budget. Most of it looks terrible on TV.

Marvel is leaving the Superhero stuff to the films where they have a big budget and where those characters can shine. They are using the TV shows to develop the smaller more human stories.

This is a genius move on their part. Marvel gets it. Plus it shows they can do more than just superheroes"

ThePowerCosmic - A good point. Plus characters can be compelling in adventure/action stories without needing superpowers.

Take THE PUNISHER. No powers, just enough guns to make the NRA orgasm.

Or Indiana Jones. No powers, just a whip and fedora.

Or friggin James Bond. You get the point.

Of course I'm more tolerable of TV FX than some folks are. I grew up on DOCTOR WHO where those BBC guys with $10 bucks and spraypaint and tinfoil had to present the future and alien worlds on a weekly basis.

@RRA

A character is very different than a trope, which has been used about a 1000x more than Batman's even been in a film. Which is basically the animated ones, cause all the live action Batman were not Batman at all, but I digress.

Anyway, I did say I still hoped it was good.

@RRA

But I do agree more female shows and movies is a good thing. Only makes it more of an odd choice that Marvel seems to be avoiding Elektra for Daredevil. But I'm sure Daredevil will still be the best thing Marvel has produced since Captain America TWS.
