AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Matches Ratings Low In Mid-Season Return

The mid-season premiere of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. matched the mid-season finale in the coveted 18-49 demographic. However, overall viewership is up and the show should receive a boost once DVR ratings are factored.

Per TV by the Numbers, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returned with a new episode on Tuesday but to modest ratings. The mid-season premiere matched the mid-season finale as the lowest ratings for the show, garnering a meager 2.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic that advertisers crave. Overall viewership is up however, at 6.5 million viewers. However, a prime time network television show's success is often judged by how much of the 18-49 age demographic it can command. One thing to take into consideration is that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has done very well in DVR ratings, typically receiving a nice overnight boost to it's initial score.

Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker, Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s first television series, is from executive producers Joss Whedon (Marvel's The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who co-wrote the pilot (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) also serve as executive producers. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television."

The ratings aren't that terrible enough for cancellation though. Too much comparing to the audience of the first few episodes. Luckily there's still another 10 episodes left for there to be no viewers left.

It was a bad idea to connect this to the McU.....it would've opened different doors as none of Avengers will ever make an appearance.

I hope they keep the DC tv shows in a sperate universe.

Still going to watch this sometime this year.

Why they didn't bring back Dum Dum, I don't know. They're so keen on bringing actors from the films, so why not Neal Mc[fricking]Donough?

Lol random but I literally just realised that he was in Band of Brothers :P

It sucks I never clicked with it. For me it just not that good or interesting I don't connect with any character. I do agree that this should have been its on thing, the fact that it's connected to the MCU and you only get bits here and there about it.

It seems being attached to the MCU is a double edged sword.

It allows them the advantage of being associated with some very successful franchises BUT it is never allowed to conflict with them.

The films take priority so AoS can never sent an agenda and it's hands are tied when it comes to creating stories that could directly effect what is happening in the films.

Whatever happens in CA:TWS looks like it casts a shadow of doubt over the ethics of the 'offcial' SHIELD organisation. So what we get in AoS are not really any proper SHIELD agents. They're just a group of people who can do their own thing.

The ratings are up: The numbers went up this week from the lastep. In the fast affiliate ratings it was 2.1 (vs 2.0 last ep) and in the finals it was 2.2 (vs 2.1 last ep).

6.48 millions vs 5.93 millions

*sigh*

I'd love it if this show had a purpose. It seems to just meander through its weekly plots aimlessly; the Coulson subplot being the sole payoff. Once that gets resolved, what then? Skye and the drama with her parents? Yawn.

This show is wasted potential until it finds some relevant footing; a black eye on the Marvel live action thus far.

That's really where creativity comes into play. They don't have to conflict with the films, and they should be working on lower level threats (not Thanos or Ultron level of course) that will remain mostly unknown to the general public but be interesting enough to warrant having a show at all.

Everything isn't obviously going to be on the 'alien invasion of New York' level, and it doesn't have to be, but even in the comics they've had some interesting encounters with enemies and threats that were self contained and nothing the Avengers needed to come in and handle.

They could have been the 'X-Files' of the MCU and could have been involved in some really interesting scenarios with the more obscure villains and enemies but instead we get the mundane things we've been seeing.

The cast is boring enough as it is, the writing REALLY doesn't help at all with that so the show to me was D.O.A.

LOL ain't this cute, at least you're giving the haters hope for cancellation.

If you're still holding this series to the ridiculous standards of the first episodes hype numbers, then yes the numbers are down, but for that time slot they're actually doing better than they have had in the past for that time slot in years.

If only they actually understood that these are AoS's stabilized numbers going forward.

It's just a 6.1 mill viewers per ep type of show.

People do realize Arrow doesn't average these type numbers?

You do get that, right?

"People do realize Arrow doesn't average these type numbers?"

Do you realize that Arrow is on a partial-Network show?

This show is just awful. There is no dancing around that. I tried to watch it and wanted to like it but it is just a poor show. This Coulson character is not remotely interesting and Ming-Na, who should be the focus, just flies a plane.

This whole show screams wasted opportunity.

^They're too invested in their agenda, this perception of what the MCU "should be" to embrace any of the good coming from this thing, you'll notice that the people who despise this show are the same ones still trying to validate their opinion of IM3 being shit.

Of course it's a wasted opportunity in it's 11th episode? Do you realize if they cancelled your precious Arrow before it's time ( around ep 11) you guys wouldn't be able to sniff it's butt stains the way you do now in season 2?

Btw none of you experts loved that show this much til this year so that shows you right there ghow much can change in a season.

I bring up it's ratings because you all try to associate them up or down with AoS's success , when the show you all assume is better couldn't even dream of averaging AoS's numbers.

So again, numbers equal quality right? if so Arrow is two levels below AoS's shit show.

Just using your logic here.

Those ratings are a little too low. I'm not a fan of the show only because i prefer my tv show's to either be serious in tone or just straight up good comedy.

The show just needs some serious drama and better scenarios and better investigations.

"i think once they get a break out star this show will take off."

Agreed. I'm banking on the two new agents being added to the Team, maybe they'll bring some much needed variety in skill and development to the team.

Just watch , let one of these new guys be Quartermain or Woo or somebody known like that and watch these boys change their tune.

If this continues, they'll cancel it and that's bad because it could get better. Maybe the second half of the season will surprise us! MAYBE! I'll watch ep11 in about an hour when I'll get home.
