I'm Watching "The Magical Place" Tonight

... why not you?

Editorial Opinion

A lot of, frankly deserved, derision has been heaped on Agents of SHIELD.

It's boring. The character are flat. Their isn't enough superhero or even Marvel in it. It's wearing Coulson thinner than he can stretch - particularly the mystery of his death and resurrection. The Thor:DW tie in show was perfunctory at best.

All perfectly valid. I watched for a few weeks, and by all accounts (and slumping ratings) I did what most people did - I dropped out.

I'm coming back tonight; I'm giving AoS another chance. Why?

Well, for many of the same reasons most of us watched in the first place:

I want to watch Marvel in their efforts to expand the MCU.
I love Clark Gregg and Phil Coulson.
I want to encourage a more or less unprecedented TV show experiment that builds on a more or less unprecedented cinematic experiment.
I want to see stuff from the comics brought to life.

Why come back now? Well, an actual hint of what direction they are taking Coulson is a big part of it, as is getting some answers (however indirect) to what really happened to him after after all this hemming and hawing about it for half a season. It's only part of the story though, and my renewed interest comes with high expectations and hope for the future of the series and for the MCU in general.

This is a big night for the show, likely not a make or break for future seasons, but important eyes will be watching the ratings. The folks in charge at ABC/Marvel/Disney are almost assuredly looking for a spike in ratings to coincide with a big reveal of not only one of the show's biggest mysteries, but one of the remaining question marks from one of the highest grossing films of all time.

If you can't get people to tune in for an hour to see that, your show is in trouble. While its not been... well good... for half a season, I think such an experiment should be given the room and resources it needs to breath and grow into itself - something even ultimately very popular shows need and often, unfortunately, never get.

Also, there are a number of risky ventures on the horizon for the MCU: the annouced Netflix shows: Daredevil, Iron First, and Luke Cage as well as The Defenders mini-series. The rumored return of Hayley Atwell in an Agent Carter show.

Even some tricky upcoming films (like Ant-Man) might benefit from an increased interest in the show. Not to mention the films that are even further down the road that might not see the light of day like Doctor Strange (and "real" magic in the MCU), Black Panther, and countless others who many would like to see realized.

Will one episode of improved ratings for AoS make or break these projects; will it get green-lights for those on the fence? No, of course not.

Will it help Agents of SHIELD become a better show if people tune in to see what the hell actually happened to Coulson? Could it help get us more seasons that will give the showrunners more to work with? That's actually not to far fetched...

The deal for season one of the show is inked, but it still has 12 episodes left to show its colors - literally, lets see something besides muted earth tones and shades of grey. There is a lot of show left this season, and a big spike in ratings for this important mid-season return could help to indicate that the interest in expanding the MCU to TV is still strong, and that we will watch if, you know, something interesting actually happens.

Given that Coulson's resurrection has been a core plot element for AoS (a bit too much most will tell you), failure to generate an audience might sink this ship well before its due. If not totally kill it, then it could weaken it with reduced budgets, even less access to Marvel properties, and the ever present fear of a shifting time slot - all death knells for a show with declining ratings.

The success of this episode however, can strengthen the Agents of SHIELD brand and encourage even more support from up top. A stronger AoS brings in more viewers and more encouragement to keep experimenting. This leads to increasing the resources and support for not only AoS, but of those shows (and to a lesser extent films) already announced but that have yet to have budgets and details fleshed out. It tells the folks who make the calls that we will show up for more of the MCU, and help them give the thumbs up to more of what we love.

The Marvel universe is vast (even one cut off from Spiderman, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four), and The Avengers and their brethren are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

If we really want to see more of it, and if we want it done right, we can start, tonight, but supporting a so far flawed but worthwhile experiment in the MCU. Unlike a film that misses its mark, Agents of SHIELD has a chance to course correct. If enough people watch this episode, its a clear enough signal that we will give it that chance and will come back for good if it succeeds in really tapping into the world that has made the MCU juggernaut the force it is today.

That is worth an hour of your Tuesday. At least, it is for me.

I only disagree about your comments about the characters being flat.

The only flat character I find is Ward. The other characters are just poorly performed. Except for Coulson and Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen). Honestly, I think May is one of the best written best performed characters on the show.

I applaud your effort in writing this editorial. You took your time, tried to make it make sense. Well done.

But...

You stopped watching after how many episodes? A flawed, but worthwile experiment?

Slumping ratings?

You need to research before you write.

AoS's ratings have been very stable since episode 6. There have been miniscule movement up and down week to week since then. There are other plotlines happening besides Coulson's ressurection.

This pandering excuse for an editorial is a problem. I would love to see someone say to watch AoS based on it's merits, not simply on it's connections to the MCU.

AoS is fun, entertaining, and, IMO, very well made. Most people seem to have let the underlying plots and slick connectivity of the show slip by their small minds. I say watch AoS as well, but not for just 1 event, watch for the enjoyment you'd get out of seeing a good show.

And AoS is Marvel enough. It's made by Marvel, therefore all parts of it, existing or new, are still Marvel.

I never hear anyone talk about any shows that aren't on Netflix or Hulu.
I guess all current tv shows will be cancelled next season.
Or maybe I don't talk to enough people.

@Charlie

Arrow, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Two shows that most, if not all fans will tell you had terrible first seasons.

Buffy went on to become probably the most successful vampire show ever.

Arrow, from what I am told, is doing alot better for Season 2 (I don't watch, but that's because I don't like DC).

AoS - 4th most watched new show this season. Sitting at either #2 or #3 in 18-49yr old Male viewership (can't remember which one.) Ratings have gone either up or down 0.1 week to week since Episode 6. C3 stats (which are Live+SD viewing including commercials) which are what advertisers use to buy ad space, are currently #2 for Tuesday primetime (behind only NCIS).

AoS is building a universe, which takes time. The relationships between the characters, their backstories, their motivations, these things are being fleshed out slowly. They are not spoonfeeding things to viewers, not pandering to the 3 second attention spans of this generation. It takes time to weave the web their weaving, and to me, they are doing a Marvelous job (pun intended).

And AoS is delivering what it promised. It's premise was a SHIELD team dealing with fallout from an expanding universe of superpowered beings and evil entities. It's not a superhero show, never promised to be.

Oh, and it would've been impossible to keep the ratings they had at the Pilot. A 4.1 share is unheard of on network television, and no one realistically expected it to stay anywhere close to that number.

I did do research - Every week sees a decline in viewership and ratings except an expected uptick in viewers for all TV during Thanksgiving week ep. 9 (The share went up a bit as well).

Stable since 6? There's been 10 episodes. The mid-season finale was the lowest rated episode of the season. That's a decline, a slump, a sign of deflating interest.

I watch through F.Z.Z.T.. I think, all of the blandness kind of blended the shows together, so its tough to say - it might have been sooner, but I really can't tell you... because I really can't tell you what happened from one episode to the next. I stopped because not a single person on the show was interesting. Not Coulson, not Skye, not May, or Meathead, or the WAAAAY beyond stock techs characters whose names are the only thing remarkable about them.

"Team forms in Pilot, then goes to some place, and uh, does some things. Repeat. Occasionally reference the Battle of New York or half introduce a character that no one knows without looking it up, and Coulson acts weird about his death."

Its just all bland quasi-spy stuff, nothing really interesting or worthwhile except for potential. Calling it Marvel enough just because its MADE by Marvel is really missing the point - few people are watching this show on its thin premise or it own cliched merits.

If you are using broad archetypes (mysterious hacker, obsessive techs, quiet badass with a dark past, barrel chested hero) in order to introduce a much larger world, then fine - I'll buy that. But there so little of that world to go on so far, and what they have developed hasn't paid off in any way.

Its early, I'm giving it a shot, but to say this show should be enjoyed on its own merits... those merits are few and far between. Without the MCU, this would already be dead in the water, and its not doing so hot with what it little connections it does have.

They have time to course correct. I hope they do.

You didn't do enough research then. @mercwithmouth is exactly right, AoS is doing well when you factor in DVR use and is doing well with key demographics. It's future does NOT depend on this one episode.

Good response.

I like that you're defending your POV. It is possible that we a reading different reports that spin things in opposite ways.

The made by Marvel things is something I'll stick to. I believe that since the show is produced by Marvel, they don't need to introduce existing characters to be a Marvel show. They have every right to introduce brand new characters and develop them into what could be lovable characters.

General consensus I've heard was the 1st season of Arrow was subpar. I don't watch the show myself, so I'm forced to use other's opinions on what it was. I've heard nothing but great things about it this season, and I'm happy the DC fans have a show they love. It's great for the genre. And I never saw the Blade show. Someday I'll try to find torrents for it.

Great editorial for voicing your own opinion. I agree with the problems and concerns you have for the show.
I'm not a fan of the show i'm still waiting for the how to impress me and to take its characters and situations seriously.

Ok, so... hmm. I just. I'm sorry if anyone watched because of this - apparently they learned nothing from the first half of the season, or the entire run of Lost or its countless knockoffs.

Take the mystery box out back and shoot it. This isn't world building, its lazy writing. End this madness.

Good day.

Dude, smoke a joint and relax, man. It's just a TV show.

And last night's episode was insane. Just the visuals during the operation scene were enough to bring most skeptics back for another episode. And all the new questions.

Also, the possibility of Mike Peterson becoming Deathlok have some people going nuts.

Last night, I started by flipping back and forth between this and Transformers. After about 10 minutes I couldn't take any more of this BULL and went full Transformers.

On a side note, Power Rangers > Agents of Shield

That's coming from a guy who hates Power Rangers, AOS is arguably the worst show on television. Even my four year old nephew's favorite PBSkids show has higher quality writing than this crap.

@merc - it didn't bring this skeptic back. Like JJ I was flipping back an forth, and quit on the terrible show that is AoS.

this article made me check it out, and boo, just boo to this show.
