DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Officially Resumes Production Monday; Marvel Plans To "Build Out" Street-Level Heroes

Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D'Onofrio recently revealed that the Disney+ series would resume filming very soon after taking a break in production due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, and THR has confirmed that cameras are set to begin rolling again this Monday.

We also have word that Netflix's Daredevil stunt and fight coordinator Philip Silvera has been enlisted to act as stunt coordinator and second unit director for the show.

Shortly after the strikes were resolved, we learned that Marvel execs reviewed some footage from the show while filming was paused, and decided that a "significant creative reboot" was in order. Head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman, along with directors for the remaining episodes, were let go, and Kevin Feige is said to have signed-off on a pretty major course-change.

According to THR, this involves changing the series from a legal procedural to "something that aims to harken back to the gritty and violent tone of that first well-regarded series. It also reaffirms the show’s focus on more street-level heroics and less on heavy (and costly) visual effects."

The trade also mentions that Marvel is interested in doing more with Echo's Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) and is "already developing new ideas as it seeks to build out its street-level heroes."

What these ideas are remains to be seen, but with Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle returning along with DOnofrio and Charlie Cox, we wouldn't be at all surprised if at least some of the other "DefenderVerse" heroes, such as Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, joined them down the line, potentially forming another Defenders-style team.

Last we heard, The Punisher writer Dario Scardapane had come aboard as the project's new showrunner, with Moon Knight helmers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead on directing duties.

Born Again will see the Man Without Fear (Cox) face-off against his old nemesis Wilson Fisk (D'Onofrio), who will most likely be running for mayor of NYC when the story gets underway.

Initially, Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll were not going to be a part of the series, but after the revamp, it seems they will reprise their respective roles as Foggy Nelson and Karen Page after all.

The seres is not expected to run for the originally announced 18 episodes. A recent rumor claimed that the show would likely run for 9 (possibly 6) episodes before taking a mid-season break.

The upcoming Disney+ series doesn't have an official release date yet.

Why can't we get the stunt coordinators from Shang Chi? That's how Daredevil should be handled with action scenes. I have no issues with Echo and others making cameos or having significant roles. As long as it doesn't feel forced in like Valkyrie felt forced into The Marvels just to say "Hey look! A Cameo!"

@SonOfAGif - TBF with street level and her having lived in NYC all her adult life should be fairly easy to have her part of NYC street level stories without ever seeming forced. IF they pull it off well and how much a part of it all she will be is another matter...

...but with her past could easily wrap her into a working undercover storyline for instance with characters like JJ organically or just generaly with her knowledge of the underworld having a role at helping DD and Spidey take down Kingpin's organisation.

@SonOfAGif - Getting the stunt coordinator from Netflix DD seems like an absolute win to me. No special effects, just fantastic fight scenes that seem realistic. I man some of Matt’s skills seem insane and I am thinking specifically about what he did with the chain attached to him but those fights were awesome.

@RolandD - Did you watch the making of Shang Chi? All hand to hand scenes were practical with almost no special effects unless it involved the rings. A bulk of the movie was entirely practical.

RolandD - 1/20/2024, 5:20 PM
@SonOfAGif - I did not. Is that on Disney+ or do you have to own a hardcopy to watch it. I had no complaints with the fight scenes in Shang Chi. I just thought the fight scenes in Netflix daredevil were awesome.

@WaffeX - They would absolutely need to reboot for that. Netflix Luke Cage is a completely different character. He would never be that guy.

And PLEASE reboot Danny to be more stoic and not such a hot [frick]ing mess. Dude's like a smoke-cloud of looney tune hands and feet.

So only after they ruin the cosmic and mystical sides of the universe they want to return to street level?

ModHaterSLADE
ModHaterSLADE - 1/20/2024, 12:25 PM
Damn good news, feels like the gritty, street level side of the MCU doesn't get nearly as much attention.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/20/2024, 12:54 PM
@ModHaterSLADE - Also EXACTLY the sort of thing that can work very well for TV with more sensible budgets instead of trying to do more cosmic level, CGI heavy powers stuff sans the BO returns to pay for it (not negating having street level characters also appear in the films too).
ModHaterSLADE
ModHaterSLADE - 1/20/2024, 2:41 PM
@Apophis71 - Yeah, nice change of pace from these cgi bloated MCU movies.
RolandD
RolandD - 1/20/2024, 4:20 PM
@ModHaterSLADE - Yes! This isn’t everything but this is part of what made Netflix DD great . We are already getting many of the cast members that also made it great so the next thing is the writing as far as I’m concerned.
ModHaterSLADE
ModHaterSLADE - 1/20/2024, 8:16 PM
@RolandD - Exactly, all they need to do is recapture the grittiness that made DD a hit in the first place. That and potentially having Fisk as the major threat for NYC street heroes as mayor is a good direction to go in.

Honestly, never thought they’d have the sense to do shit like this. Got to commend it.

We don't NEED a Defenders style "team-up down the road".

Just insert great characters like Ritter Jessica Jones, Colter Luke Cage, the Punisher, Echo, Bullseye, Elektra where they make narrative sense.

Then we can talk about them bringing Ghost Rider & Mephisto in on the fun somewhere too.

The stunts on Netflix's Daredevil were really good.
Much bester than Shang-Chi's imo.

Hiring the guy who did them to be 2nd United directory is really smart.
Smarter would be to hire the whole Crew.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/20/2024, 1:22 PM
@MarvelZombie616 - I loved DD but tbh not all the fight scenes were as good as we think they were when you realy scrutinise them but great for TV and the budget (there is a reason why many were in darkly lit corridors). Shang Chi fight scenes were amongst the best we have ever had in any CBM's, don't let opinions of the third act CGI stuff impair respect for stuff like the bus fight scene or the scaffolding fight scene. Compare and contrast on a TV, can't see how anyone could think the DD stuff was 'Much bester', fair if you think they are around the same level give or take but...

...however just think your opinion, which you are entitled to have, is flavoured by the context of the stories and not based on direct compare and contrast of the non-CGI fist fights sans other considerations of the overall products.

Iron Fist should be re-introduced in Shang Chi 2.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/20/2024, 1:26 PM
@Order66 - Do think that is the best place for a first re-introduction, and certainly should be in a Shang-Chi film but not entirely against him first having an appearance on a D+ show IF well handled, but again think film first is the better option.
Order66
Order66 - 1/20/2024, 3:07 PM
@Apophis71 - either bring back Finn or recast him but don’t contradict the events of the Netflix show. Just don’t mention the Netflix stuff lol but don’t create something that would conflict the past events.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/20/2024, 3:44 PM
@Order66 - My opinion entirely generaly speaking, no need to mention anything on Netflix and keep it all at least loose canon sans good reasons to do so like the flashback stuff for Kingpin in Echo. Fine with recast or not but unless it is essential no reason to contradict anything significant, just can ignore dragon's under New York type stuff (as in neither confirm nor deny it being canon explicitly). Although saying that would prefer Iron Fist is using his traditional powers again not glowing guns, so that bit may need addressing or retconning one way or another.
