The Defenders is set to start shooting soon, so it makes sense that Marvel Television and Netflix have found a director for the first two episodes of what we now officially know will be an eight part series (confirmed to debut on the online streaming service in 2017). Acclaimed television director S.J. Clarkson of Jessica Jones ("AKA Crush Syndrome" and "AKA Ladies Night") and Orange of the New Black fame has landed the job, and Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb had this to say about her being chosen.

"S.J.'s take on the material is outstanding. We loved her work on 'Marvel’s Jessica Jones' and couldn’t think of a more talented and accomplished person to helm the first two episodes of 'Marvel’s The Defenders.'" It has also been revealed that Clarkson will serve as an executive producer on the premiere. What her role beyond that will isn't mentioned, but this is a good start for the series!

A vague new synopsis accompanied the announcement, though it doesn't offer up too much!

'Marvel’s The Defenders' follows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. A quartet of singular heroes with one common goal - to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.

The Defenders stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Finn Jones as Danny Rand, and Sigourney Weaver as the show's mysterious villain

I still can't believe that they snagged Sigourney Weaver for this.

Now THIS is more like it! Not hiring a female director for a female series because uh, gender equality BS PR gimmick, but because she's the best one for the job in a series whose leads are not solely female! And announcing the news because she's talented, not female! Now THIS I can dig. A lot.
