AVENGERS: ENDGAME Star Anthony Mackie Talks Calling Out Marvel Studios And Becoming Captain America

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackee recently called out Marvel Studios for a lack of diversity, and he has now elaborated on that, while also talking more about becoming Captain America.

Earlier this year, Avengers: Endgame star Anthony Mackie called Marvel Studios out for a lack of diversity behind the scenes, and criticised the fact that their only primarily Black cast and crew was on a movie with a Black lead (2018's Black Panther). In a new interview with Fatherly, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier star elaborated on those comments.

"I’ll say this: I don’t think what’s happening is a racism problem," the actor clarified. "I think it’s an unawareness problem. With Marvel, I really think with most companies, they feel like they’re doing what they should be doing. In no way, shape, or form, is it enough. My big thing is, put your money where your mouth is. You can’t cast a Black dude as one of your main superheroes and not expect him to have that conversation. It’s just in my DNA to have that conversation."

"It’s a huge opportunity for me to be part of the Marvel universe so it’s my job to make sure the Marvel universe is as good as it can be," Mackie continued, sounding a lot like Captain America. "Anyone who’s big in our industry, if they have a party at their house, their party is 98 percent white. If you go to their office and their office is 98 percent white, that reflects their reality."

Taking of Cap, it's expected that Mackie will pick up that mantle following the upcoming Disney+ series (which was recently delayed from next month to an undisclosed premiere date), and he went on to talk about how it felt to be handed the mantle of Captain America from Marvel Studios.

"It was humbling, just simply because of my background and where I came from," he explained. "It’s even more humbling considering where we are as a country. Marvel has done a lot as far as actors in front of the camera. Having Captain America pass the shield to a Black guy. Every studio has to do more about ushering more people into the business."

Clearly, Mackie plans to use his platform as the new Captain America to raise awareness of race issues in Hollywood, and that's no bad thing given the current climate.

What are your thoughts on the actor's remarks here?

If they get some more color behind the scenes, its fine, but not like it will change the quality of the film. Dont really see why it has to big a big deal one way or the other.

Like if this stuff is going to bring this kind of stuff up, there are still worst things.

The netfix series On My Block is a flawed but fun show.
First season they had a latina character who’s parents were deported and she was preparing for his Quinceañera, so year you could say her ethnicity was a big part of the character.......
They cast a german italian Trump supporter
Yeah not many people talked about that, i only found out a few months ago and she isnt even on the show anymore

@dracula - I think it all boils down to equal representation and not so much about the quality of the product

@dracula - the point is it's good to make changes to what people do see but it's also important to make changes they dont. The status quo is bad, the proportion of non whites in the industry is abysmal because so few get a good start in life. A decent basic education that can lead to higher education and work placed learning. If people dont talk about this nothing will change. Even if companies like Disney do this for good press, in other words the wrong reason, it's still a good thing. Opportunities reduce poverty, crime, disease and so much more. Industries like film need to lead the way as they are in the public view.

@MalesMarcel - if it isnt about quality of the product, then its not doing anyone any favors. This is how a wrinkle in time failed. They tried to be as diverse as possible, both in front of and behind the camera. And now the film has almost entirely faded into obscurity. How exactly is that helping the situation? Even with something like black panther its known just as much for its poor cgi finale as it is for the good stuff like directing and soundtrack.

Also in general this is a business built on entertainment. Claiming quality doesnt matter as long as representation is just gonna lead to boring cliche movies. People wont go to watch if they arent entertained.

@Origame - What I meant to say is that it's not about improving or worsen the quality and more about retaining that quality with different people.

And it is a business built on entertainment, and therefore a lot of eyes are fixed on it. And thus behind the scenes people try to use it to set an example.

But as you say, there are times that it affects the final product in a negative way.

@MalesMarcel - but if you're looking for diversity, you aren't looking for quality. And quality, no matter what the goal of the film is, should be the priority. Remember we had movies like steel, electra, and catwoman which had the diversity we claim to want. Yet those are laughably bad and made studios worry about using diversity in the first place. And the whole reason they're doing diversity now is because of black panther, a genuinely good movie. Quality should always be first. It should be who's best, and if you still get majority white and male, that should be acceptable as long as the opportunity is still there.

He really makes some good points without shitting on Marvel. Although I imagine that Marvel is one of those anyones who is big who keeps it up, even when Mackie says the problem is bigger than Marvel.

I do look forward to seeing him as Captain america though. Kinda hope to see him and Captain Marvel struggling to be the new Captain of the Avengers post-Endgame.
