FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER Head Writer Explains What's Driving Sam & Bucky Through The Series

Following those rave reviews, check out what The Falcon and the Winter Soldier head writer Malcolm Spellman had to say about what's driving Sam and Bucky's throughout the course of the series.

Like every fan in the world, it wasn't until that very special car scene in Captain America: Civil War where it just clicked for Kevin Feige and the team at Marvel Studios as they realized that Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) absolutely needed a spinoff.

Thankfully, Disney+ came knocking just a short while later, opening the door for a myriad of new Marvel stories to be explored.

Speaking with head writer Malcolm Spellman, he confirmed that Mackie and Stan's undeniable chemistry in that film, and on the subsequent press tour, planted the first seed that led to him wanting to write a series for these two underrated characters.

"I swear that I always say this in these interviews, I believe in one moment, me, Kevin, every fan in the Marvel universe saw that these two needed a series and that was that moment in Civil War when they’re in the car and I don’t know how it was possible that they had that much chemistry," he tells us. "We didn’t have to see anything more - I mean we did end up watching a bunch of interviews with them to see that that chemistry does live beyond - but, I showed up knowing what they could do. I showed up knowing that if I just put those two in certain scenarios, they’re going to take it out the park."

With Captain America's (Chris Evans) shield suddenly finding itself in the wrong hands, it'll be up to Sam and Bucky to save the day before it's too late. But their journey won't be an easy one, as they'll also be forced to face a number of personal demons. Luckily, they'll have each other to lean on - or, at least, bicker with. Spellman explains,

"Well, they’re both dealing with - they both have very, very serious personal issues they’re going to have to deal with. Sam is dealing with doubt on two levels, doubt because Steve is a helluva guy, leaving some big shoes to fill and doubt that this country would ever accept a black man carrying that symbol.

Bucky is dealing with all this regret and guilt that’s accrued over a hundred years of killing people, or almost a hundred years of killing people, and he’s finally having a breath in his life to confront that, so before they deal with the shield, they have to deal with themselves, and when they do deal with the shield, they have to deal with the fact that their mutual best friend Steve Rogers is gone and sort of like the sense of loss that that brings.

What you see happen in the first episode is very, very real, it’s not like it’s about to do a U-turn in episode two."

After reading the quote I see why the thumbnail was chosen. Still, it's pretty funny to me the title says "what's driving them" and has a picture of them sitting in a (driverless) car next to it.

@KingPatel - was wondering though, how is it like to do press like this? I imagine its easy doing it from home, but I also understand if that makes it feel both formal and informal at the same time. Making it kinda difficult to set a tone for the interview.

This also goes for @LiteraryJoe

@bkmeijer - It's not too bad, everyone is going through the same thing, so it's a lot more relaxed than actually being at a press tour. Better than audio interviews since you can actually see the person's reaction to you versus not being exactly sure when someone's done talking on the phone.

It's also way easier doing Zoom interviews since if I ever wanted to sit down with Marvel or any major studio before, I'd have to actually fly out to LA, which is just not cost-effective. I'm hoping Zoom interviews will be an option for the foreseeable future, but who knows, once theaters reopen, they may switch back to the old standard.

@bkmeijer - @kingpatel is super right about Zoom.

Personally, I chat with everyone via video so that we get the right chemistry and feel each other's vibe.

However, everyone is home. So I tell everyone that we are talking video but that I will only share audio. It makes them much more comfortable and conversational.

I don't really look at myself as an interviewer, but more of a host. The job is to make them feel comfortable enough that they genuinely want to share new tidbits with you, and so they will reach back out to you personally. You'd be surprised who you grow close to, and who winds up in your texts just from spending time via zoom. Zoom pro makes it so you can use it longer than 40 mins which is good for me because ideally, I want someone to have a good enough time that they want to chat just as long when it isn't being recorded, so interviewing is more of the road that lets me share passion with the people who have what it takes to fuel my ambition.

Loooong answer lol, and I am sure Rohan has a different situation when he talks to big people like this, when pressed for time, especially involved in a press circuit where several are involved, it's tougher to get that ease, so in those situations it can be tougher to connect. Especially if you have multiple people on at once...

Warner Bros can be tricky with their stuff, and picky haha. But it's worth it. Happy to answer questions like this anytime, thanks for showing interest!

@LiteraryJoe @KingPatel - interesting answers. Didn't even think about it yet how it makes it easier to bridge (geographical) distances.

Definitely something they should keep around in my opinion. Both your interviews have relaxed vibes, which makes it an easy watch/listen.

Off topic: I think we've already heard this before, but James Gunn really wants us to know Yondu will not be coming back in GOTG3.

"doubt that this country would ever accept a black man carrying that symbol."

I don't know about the fictional universe they live in, but I guarantee large section in the real world, no matter what, most certainly will not.

I applaud the direction. Some will come along because there is a precedent of him doing it for a good number of years in the comics, others of the bond between Steve and Sam in the movies and the natural progression. Some though, it will never happen.

@Hulkh8liars - or they won't and they won't watch it. They don't have to do anything except know that it happened when it comes to pass.

Hulkh8liars - 3/18/2021, 6:34 PM
@inkniron - anyone who cares what color skin a comic character is definitely has to get over it. So body said they had to watch it but it will be stupid and racist to skip cap 4 just because it's someone different
inkniron
inkniron - 3/18/2021, 7:15 PM
@Hulkh8liars - I agree, it is racist. I've been on this rock long enough to know that's exactly why they'll never get over it. I'll go as far to say that some right wing media will probably run pieces on it. A lot of their message anymore isn't what the R's can do for you but rather what the D's are trying to take away from them and give to the other.
