TFATWS Actor Wyatt Russell Shares New Details On His Mysterious Character - SPOILERS

We've known that John Walker would be suiting-up as the new Captain America in TFATWS for a while now, but in a new interview, Wyatt Russell has shared some intriguing details on his mysterious character.

Spoilers for the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier follow.

Marvel has made no secret of the fact that its second Disney+ show, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier ,would introduce an all-new Captain America, and we met the mysterious John Walker (Wyatt Russell) in the final scene of Friday's series premiere.

In the comics, Walker was introduced as Super-Patriot (later U.S. Agent), a more pragmatic and ruthless incarnation of the Sentinel of Liberty. The show is expected to make a few key changes to the character's origin, but it doesn't sound like they'll be straying too far away from Walker's core persona and motivations.

During an interview with USA Today, Russell acknowledged that not everyone is going to be on board with a new Cap (“it would be an honor, I guess, to be disliked in the Marvel universe”) while revealing some intriguing new details about his take on John Walker.

“I don't think there's really been many MCU characters who've had quite the dilemma he's had in terms of trying to fit into this sort of moralistic superhero world,” Russell says of the former Marine. “He's been thrust into this role as Captain America and he's going to do it his way, and he wants to do it right. But his way is a very specific way that he has learned through being basically a trained human hunter. I mean, that's what Marines are. They're not Steve Rogers, they're not the same. They're not like Boy Scouts anymore. They're a little bit more gnarly."

Russell also confirms that Walker will not be a "super-soldier" like Steve Rogers, and it also sounds like he'll be a more sympathetic figure than we've been led to believe... initially, at least.

“There's always an element of reality (in the show) where it's like, well, sometimes you need that guy, and it's not always pretty,” he adds. “It’s fun to play those characters because they're always at odds with themselves. They're always at odds with their own abilities and with their own moral compass. They know what is right, kind of, but they also want to win and they battle with that.”

We will most likely learn a lot more about Walker and the government's plans for his new Captain America during the second episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. In the meantime, let us know what you thought of the series premiere in the comments. You can check out my review HERE.

I'm excited to see where this goes. I wonder if its foreshadowing to a Dark Avengers/Dark Reign arc.

Seems like we could have a lot of stops along the way until we get a true New Avengers team. Which is great, it will feel more monumental when that officially happens.

@Turtlestrong - that makes sense, especially since we're getting armor wars to explain a dark avengers version of iron man and Ross is gonna be in she hulk, with the rumor he's red hulk there.

@Turtlestrong - The Dark Reign story arc is one of the best Marvel events.

Maybe they'll do it after Secret Invasion.

TFATWS LMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ lol in all seriousness - Marvel gets an applause for The Falcons deep story / background - just the bank scene alone - I’m cool enough for a selfie but you still hit me with the financial rhetoric that is so blatantly racists - everyone wants to give props to the DJ but when it comes time to pay everyone is M.I.A - oh shit that rhyme

@TyrantBossMedia - you won't like this show then. It goes into what it's like being black in America. I know you don't think racism is a thing. You should tune out now

yeah, banks always follow the letter of the law. they're the most upstanding organizations in the country!

you moved that goal post with the quickness!

i didn't assert that but yes, they have a documented history of being racist which necessitated the very laws you just mentioned.

go change your diaper.

@TyrantBossMedia - I'm a project manager at a large bank. I can tell you that we have policies and procedures in place to make sure everyone is treated fairly. We also have the OCC and CFPB come in every year and test all of our practices, as well as review tons of account examples.

If there is racism going on at our bank, I can honestly tell you its being done at the individual level, and its certainly not a company policy or instructions from higher ups. Just think about how crazy that is. Someone on the floor would have spoken up if that were the case.

@CorndogBurglar - What people don't understand is if a bank gets caught treating people unfairly, there are very hefty fines that they have to pay and its horrible for their reputation. They would end up losing more than they ever could have by actually actually processing a loan and nit getting paid back.

@CorndogBurglar -

you're gaslighting. large banks have had their reputations (rightfully) destroyed and paid hefty fines for many illegal activities from & since the '08 the financial crises.

yet, nearly all of them are still here and as powerful as ever - if not more so.

breaking laws and paying fines are a part of their business model so long as they make more at the of the process. greasing some federal wheels doesn't hurt either.

@TyrantBossMedia - so The Blip was a world event - I’m sure global economies took a massive hit - you mean to tell me there are no bank programs for businesses that were affected ? Similar to Covid ? The fact the banker was praising him and wanted a selfie but yet didn’t have the compassion , financial programs (or failed to mention them) to help Sam is deep - you can disagree and I respect that but coming from my world and what ‘s been known to happen in history that scene was as real and deeper than some people can comprehend -

@TyrantBossMedia - Sure man. I just know all the steps that get taken and all the things we have in place. I also see all the exams and questions from government agencies that we have to deal wkth every year.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/20/2021, 7:24 AM
@HeraldNumber7 - Sadly you're not wrong. But those types of things would generall happen in behind the scenes dealings. Not in something as front-facing as turning down thousands of customer loans on a daily basis based on their race.

She was heavily in debt having taken out tons of loans and she did all of that prior to even thinking of selling the boat. If she sold the boat initially then she would not have had to get the loans.

Her business is failing, she's had no income besides that and Falcon has no job just charitable donations that were in flux - she'd be declined a loan regardless. Falcon trying to manipulate the situation by turning up so they could go "I'm a hero, give me money" is laughable.

Falcon was dumb for not selling the Shield to the museum, he could have earned money from that and museums do buy highly rare artifacts such as the shield of Captain America. He could have used that money to sort out the financial problems of his sister.

Sam's sister is using racism as an excuse for her own actions - and I'm glad the show immediately shut that down. If the show pretends that the real reason for everyone's actions is 'racism' then I'm dropping it and avoiding future stuff by this director/writer as it'd be the lamest method of dealing with this story-line.

The show is currently dealing with much more complex and nuance subject matters such as the idea of legacy, symbolism and family.

@TyrantBossMedia -

hilarious. i never once implied that. you inferred it because your flimsy argument hinges on that ridiculous point.

your baby nuts won't allow you to take a loss. so allow me to hand you another...

banks discriminate against people who don't have money, eh? 🤔 and who have we agreed were denied access to home loans and therby wealth building for a century+? oh right!

like, imagine how much of an idiot you have to be to think entrenched institutions that practiced racism on a mass scale for decades totally stopped practicing racism.

the irony of all this is that the show itself did not imply anything racist in the scene or dialogue. Sam's sister cynically inferred that (for good reason) but the scenario is generally relatable for anyone who hasn't had the funds or credit to be approved for a loan despite being an otherwise respectable individual.

and instead of empathizing with that, you'd rather quibble over the mere notion that someone somewhere has probably been denied a loan because of their race. the mental gymnastics is truly spectacular.

Indeed, character study all the way.

I want to see the complexities of the characters being concerned about how they are living up to Steve. I don't think anyone needs to be a flat out villain, the show does not need that.

• Zemo could feel that heroes are symbols who do not live up to the legacy
• Falcon is trying to protect the legacy of Captain America
• Bucky is trying to repair his legacy
• Flag Smashers are likely failed Super Soldier experiments who want a return to how the world was during the blip so they can be relevant and live up to why they were created
• Politician guy could honestly feel that the US needs a symbol to bring people together and would have been willing to choose Sam before Sam rejected the idea of symbols in a public speech
• US Agent could legitimately be struggling to live up to the legacy given to him and perhaps even admire Falcon for giving up the mantle, feeling that it makes more sense for someone who has been trained for this and potentially empowered such as himself than Sam who is just human

This show can be written so much better than 'everyone is racist'. I have hope for this show, but the remarks by the showrunner have lowered my expectations. It really does feel like its teetering on a knifes edge and could easily fall into a plotline where they make racism the focus rather than legacy.

@boogiefett - i hate the racism aspect of the scene, the guy seems to love the falcon and is super excited to meet him, but cant risk the banks money on people who dont have their financials in order, therefore risking his career. Have any of you tried to buy a house? Trying to get a home loan they scrutinize your books, and if you dont cut it they wont give you a loan. If you have good credit you can get pre-approved for things, but it would seem their credit is either not good/doesnt exist due to the blip. This is 5 months after the blip, not a year or more. How long did a single payment from the govt take to get to us after covid, let alone systems in place to help people 5 months after the most chaotic time in the world due to BILLIONS of people just showing back up.

@TyrantBossMedia - i went for a home loan twice when i was young thinking it was a simple process, nope. I built up my credit being smart with my money and finally got pre-approved when i had a 770 credit score.
