THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER: Set Report Points To Erin Kellyman Possibly Playing Songbird

There have been rumblings for a while now that Thunderbolts member Songbird will be part of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but one fan's findings from the set of the show may have confirmed that...

Photos and videos from the set of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier have started finding their way online over the past week or so, with one lot revealing that Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Georges St-Pierre spotted back in costume as the villainous Batroc the Leaper.

Now, Murphy's Multiverse has shared an account of what one Altanta, Georgia local spotted this past Tuesday in Atlanta Park. Marvel Studios was reportedly shooting a scene with St-Pierre, Desmond Chiam, and Solo: A Star Wars Story actress Erin Kellyman (her role in proceedings has been a mystery for a while).

The site explains that, "Georges was filming in a park standing with Desmond by a bench, while Erin sat between them on the back of the bench with her feet on the seat. He could not hear any dialogue but said that Erin’s character used some kind of power, unclear how, to impress the two. The power involved extras near them in a field stopping, simultaneously looking at the phones, looking up, and all walking towards them in a group and as if in a trance."

While Kellyman wasn't in a costume, these powers sound very similar to Songbird, a character we've heard will be part of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier for a while now. '

A group of female villains have been spotted on set in the past, and it's likely this iteration of the character will be part of "The Grapplers" at this point in her supervillain career. Hopefully, the door is left open to the possibility of her returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe somewhere down the line in her Songbird persona as a member of the Thunderbolts.

What do you guys think?

I don’t know that it sounds “very” similar to Songbird/Screaming Mimi, but it sounds conceivably like an interpretation of what she might be able to do with her sonic powers, and she’s one of the main reasons to introduce the Grapplers (introducing Titania For Hse Hulk is the other), so it makes sense.

OT: the big news of the day was what @Vanillain linked to in the Stumptown article: that Mulan on Disney + may have earned them a huge $261m domestic take which they don’t have to split with theaters. That would likely be in the top 25 domestic openings of all time (unadjusted) when you look at the studio’s share of those grosses.

"Stumptown article: that Mulan on Disney + may have earned them a huge $261m domestic take"

That's actually rather sh*t in terms of domestic earnings, because unlike a Cinematic release, Mulan won't earn a consistent earning over time for months. Instead it's domestic is more akin to it's FINAL DOMESTIC TOTAL because anyone who wants to pay to see it would have done so now.

As such it's more honest to compare its domestic total with the final domestic total for similar films - given they have no barrier preventing people from seeing it other than an internet connection. The domestic total is unlikely to increase much and the film is made free shortly so $261m might be all the film gets from domestic throughout it's paid run.

In addition, Disney are losing money and reputation thanks to the justifiable boycott of them in China where the film is being shown to almost empty screens. Mulan itself cost $200m and after additional costs would probably need around $600m to break-even at minimum, and that was before the delays. No chance Mulan winds up in profit.

@Scarilian - I am comparing it to final domestic total grosses... but what you have to consider is that the studios only get 50-60% of those final grosses. So Disney making $261m on their own is the equivalent of making a $522m gross in theaters.

@Scarilian - while you and I may disagree on that I think we’ll agree that it’s certainly a conversation worthy of its own cbm article. Lots to be discussed and your view is an interesting one.

Addressing it, I would say they do get to keep the whole thing whereas they don’t with theaters, and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of legs it’ll have. People forking out $30, will they do a repeat viewing? Some will, probably very few tho.

@Chewtoy - that 522 really put it in perspective. Marvel can make a killing.

@Chewtoy - For Disney, the $261M domestic figures also seems to be close to a worst-case scenario:
- Calls for boycott
- Shifting release dates, causing additional advertising costs
- Pre-release announcement within the company itself that the movie will be free with D+ in 3 months
- Lukewarm critical census

I'm sure there are movies that have had worse luck. Being able to still pull off that much money is very noteworthy.

And let's not forget: the $261M is in the conservative side.

@Scarilian

This talk is all useless because that article isn't even close to being right. If Mulan made that much in a week you'd bet your ass Black Widow and whatever else Disney has completed would be fast tracked to Disney+ Premium VOD.

@Vanillain - To be clear, I’m not arguing whether or not Mulan is a financial success itself... I’m merely pointing out that the “$30 premiere access through Disney+” release format is a very viable option if those numbers are at all accurate, as they offer the studio the same amount of profit as a truly blockbuster domestic theater run would have brought in.

@regularmovieguy - I don’t know... to do so might be a death knell for theaters. Is that in Disney’s best interest in the long run? I suspect there would be a lot of internal discussion about what to do next, so I could see them taking their time with both announcing the results and their future plans.

Still, it’s a huge number, and so I remain skeptical as well until more confirmation comes out.
Vanillain
Vanillain - 9/17/2020, 7:16 AM
@Chewtoy - I get ya. I wasn't arguing against you, just merely adding on why this is, in the long run, a "success" - less so for Mulan, and more of the potential for other films that can fair better.
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 9/17/2020, 7:18 AM
@Chewtoy

If a movie like Mulan makes 200 mil in its first week on PVOD, theaters might not deserve to be in business.

That is a huge number. Massive, bigger than anything they would've gotten from theaters. Universal was parading around when TROLLS 2 did okay numbers.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 9/17/2020, 8:20 AM
@regularmovieguy - That’s just it... this would be such a major change that I feel it would be rather daunting and set off a ton of number crunching. If you take a risky gamble (as with Trolls) and it pays off modestly, why not crow about it?

But if you take a similar gamble and the results suggest that you could chuck 90 years of being in the business of making theatrical movies and go all in on the new streaming service you just launched last year? And the move would earn you the hatred of the theater industry, and possibly permanently cripple it so that there was no going back? Not to mention leading to restructuring divisions of your own company designed to work with the old business model?

I think that then you might want to keep quiet until your upcoming investors conference call (which they have coming up for the fall) and have a firm plan on what you’re going to do going forward.

@OmegaDaGrodd -

I still wish they left Crossbones alive. I like that incarnation when Cage was leading the team and Crossbones was on it. But if they do Thunderbolts it most likely will be an amalgam of the team through the years with the probably more known characters.

Cool cool cool. Seems like she's getting recruited for the Thunderbolts, and that Zemo and Batroc will be founding members. I just hope Ghost and Justin Hammer are able to get into the mix.

I think she'd be a really good Barbara Gordon if Matt Reeves uses the character.
