On Wednesday, Marvel Studios released Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye on Disney+. Despite only being an hour long, the special managed to explore many facets of Hawkeye, including Vincent D'Onofrio's return as The Kingpin. While the actor has maintained that this is the same Wilson Fisk he portrayed in Daredevil, the villain had gone through some big changes since we last saw him.
For starters, he was quite a bit stronger, tearing a car door off with his bare hands and surviving being shot with an arrow and subsequently blown up. Some fans have wondered whether Fisk might have taken Power Broke's Super Soldier Serum, but despite some clever camera angles making D'Onofrio appear larger than life, his Kingpin was the size of a normal, albeit intimidatingly large, man.
It turns out Marvel Studios did consider a more comic-accurate take on the Kingpin of Crime, as Hawkeye producer Trinh Tran explains. "We had talked about doing a heavier set version of Kingpin," she confirms. "But ultimately, we wanted to go completely different... in a different direction for this character. To put him in that Hawaiian shirt was kind of like a dream come true."
D'Onofrio has previously revealed that he gained 20lbs for his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, and he's undeniably intimidating even without VFX or a fat suit. Recreating the Kingpin from the comics on screen would be no easy feat, particularly as people simply don't look like that in real life. Of course, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse did manage to deliver a very stylised take on Fisk thanks to animation.
