Marvel's INHUMANS Debuted With Predictably Poor Ratings But There's At Least One Silver Lining

Marvel's Inhumans has been mauled by critics so it should come as no surprise to learn that it's proved to be far from a hit for ABC. However, it may not be all bad news for the newly debuting TV series.

Inhumans has been fascinating to follow. Announced as a big budget collaboration between Marvel and IMAX, the former clearly rushed the series out and it's been torn apart by fans and journalists alike since that first cast photo was revealed. In recent months, it's been all downhill from there too thanks to an appalling trailer, a horribly awkward TCA panel, and a wave of overwhelmingly negative reviews.

The first two episodes premiered on IMAX screens earlier this month and following its debut on ABC last night, we now know that ratings were as tepid as its box office performance. The network was reportedly bracing itself for bad numbers, though, hence why it has that terrible Friday death slot.

With an average of a lowly 0.9 rating among adults 18 - 49, Inhumans launched with 3.8 million viewers last night. The first two episodes failed to top ABC's Last Man Standing/Dr. Ken sitcom block from last year which really isn't good considering the fact it's based on a Marvel property. On the plus side, Inhumans outperformed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s May finale and season four average, not to mention Agent Carter's average weekly numbers during its first season. However, that might not help it.

Why? Well, these are not the sort of numbers you'd expect from a two-hour premiere of a very expensive series and with a drop expected for next week, the future looks relatively bleak for Inhumans! These numbers could be worse, though, but the chances of a second season seem slim.

@WruceBayne - Bold paragraph = low budget. My two cents...

What a shame. Inhumans is such a cool IP. Wish it was a film or a longer series on cable.

@JonesTheCat - Although I was well aware of superheroes before due to the 60’s Batman show and Superfriends cartoon, the first comic I ever read was the first Inhumans issue. It was my uncle’s, and I read it every time I slept over night at my grandparent’s house when I was little. It was so different and it made me want to read comics.

The tv show, however, made me not want to watch tv. I was rather disappointed by everything from the first 2 episodes. I could write a very long critique about all of the things wrong with this show, but I won’t. Not worth the effort, but I know I would put more into writing the critique than the effort the folks who made this show put into the show. They clearly don’t get the property or basic screenwriting/producing/directing.

I feel a bit bad for the actors. They probably thought they were signing up for the next GotG. They ended up in the next Tranktastic 4.

@TomSolo - I tend to be very liberal when critiquing comic book properties. I know some younger fans take all of this for granted, but 10 year old me can't believe that they're actually making movies and shows about my beloved characters. When I was a kid, this didn't just not happen, it wasn't even a remote possibility. Now, i don't just get to see the A list players I always hoped would get movies one day, I even get lots of lower tiered heroes that I never even dared to hold out any hope for. All that being said, this was bad. Really bad. So bad that I was actually impressed by how bad it was.

@TomSolo - also.......I thought the same thing about the actors. Well, a lot of them were laughably bad, but that guy from GoT showed up to work. He's really trying to make chicken soup out of chicken shit. I'm sure he thought he was signing on to something a lot more significant. After all, Maximus is a great character, and it's Marvel. Yeah, that dude got screwed.

@BruceParker - I'm okay with folks taking a different approach to properties. I might not like it, but if they try and make a good story and have solid production values, I'll give them props for their solid effort and say it just isn't for me.

When I was growing up, there were some decent cartoons, but live action shows and movies were a rarity. So we thought that M.A.N.T.I.S. was great and even watched Midnight Man. And we were thankful.

Nowadays, I feel there is little excuse for a show spending the kind of money it has not having, at the very least, solid production values. There is no reason why the fight choreography, set design, cinematography, script and direction was so poor. Worse than poor... it was lazy and uninspired.

Good producers, directors and showrunners hire quality personnel and inspire them with leadership, enthusiasm and vision. It seems like most people involved with this were just there for a paycheck. Very disappointing.

@TomSolo - I agree totally...uninspired was the magic word for this...such a shame!

Stupid property anyway. People have powers so they're called Inhumans? Yeah, you're a normal human lady who happens to have magic hair. You're human. Oh and they live on the moon and have a giant teleporting bulldog. Nah.

@connorblaze - I totally agree. always wondered why people thought they were so cool. Even in the comics they would show up trying to get involved and it just wasn't doing it for me. Black bolt is kinda dope though.

I have never seen an editor more elated with a show's poor performance than you Wilding. Putting personal opinions in titles.

Some would say you have some sort of bet in wanting this to fail. Doomsday fetish? Anyway this doesn't affect the MCU at all. The show are pretty much Star Wars Legends at this point. Not really canon. The movies tolerte them and pay no attention to them.

I'll give it another two episodes because I always give shows 3 episodes to win me over, but last night was NOT a good start.

@CanadaDaDa

See, I agree with you. Buffy is my favorite T.V. show(maybe tied with Angel), hands down, but the first episode and the first season in general is so God damn lame. It's definitely worse than the Inhumans premiere which I though was fine, aside from a couple cool moments and a couple really bad, awkward moments. So, IF they do go forward, to deny it has potential to evolve would just be ignorant.

Ratings systems are useless when it come to science fiction. It's demographic that tends to bootleg or save for later watch. Live ratings are meaningless. It will make its real money based on the apps.

@nikgrid - I know, right? Putting Gorgon in boots as well was insane, especially after they made it clear how his feet were (and they were some of the shittiest hooves ever). What a terrible, lazy production.
