NBC Reveals Netflix's Ratings For Marvel's JESSICA JONES

Netflix is famous for keeping its viewership and rating numbers a secret but NBC President of Research & Development Alan Wurtzel says his network has cracked the code and the numbers for Jessica Jones are not that impressive when compared to traditional networks.

When discussing the comparison of streaming platforms to network TV shows during NBC's portion of the Winter TCA press tour,  NBC President of Research & Development Alan Wurtzel stated that the shift from traditional TV to streaming isn't happening as rapidly as some think.  According to the data Wurtzel pulled, over the course of 35 days between last September and December only averaged 4.8 million people (per episode) in the key, 18-49 demographic, watched Marvel's Jessica Jones.  "Compare these programs to shows like The Big Bang Theory, Empire or Blind Spot, and they pale in comparison. It’s not that people aren’t watching, but they (streaming) aren’t replacing broadcast."

To add to Wurtzel's point, a show like Big Bang Theory garners 18 million viewers per episode in the coveted 18-49 demographic. Fox's  Empire averages 17 million viewers.  Even a freshman drama like Blind Spot earned roughly 13 million viewers an episode.

Wurtzel stated that the key for Netflix is its business model, which doesn't rely on advertising dollars.  "
That Netflix has a different business model. Their model is for you to write a check once a month. Some shows have a narrow audience, but they don’t care as long as there is enough people coming back next month."

The digital takeover still isn't happening as fast as everyone though it would. Remember when HDDVD failed, and everyone (a few people) said movies would be strictly digital soon anyway?

A lot of people probably watched the first episode or two then threw in the towel.

OP left out this: "On Netflix, Marvel’s Jessica Jones drew 4.8M, Aziz Ansari’s Master Of None pulled in 3.9M, Narcos nabbed 3.2M; while Amazon’s Man In The High Castle clocked 2.1M "

And Narcos already got a second season.

"between last September and December only 4.8 million people watched"

Didn't it come out November 10 or so? I'd take 4.8 million views in a month.

You do realize these are numbers released by a RIVAL of Netflix, right?

NBC feels threatened by Netflix so it is pulling numbers out of thin air to make itself look better.

Tell me when Netflix releases the REAL numbers...

Well, despite me ending up being disappointed with JJ the show was the reason I now have a Netflix account.

Its good to be reminded that people do exist that watch Empire or Big Bang Theory and who also probably are voting for Trump, I just don't seem to know any.

Ratings don't matter. Netflix is for a selective audience.

Yeah, since this is TOTALLY indicative of how popular a Netflix show is...

@therealremylabeau

I didn't ready the source article, but does it say that 4.8 million was the episode average? This article makes it sound like that was the total for the series.

Just wait till costumer service from Comcast finally works again. Traditional TV will get a boost again.

To sum this up:

NBC is providing data about a strong RIVAL.

They use data that relies on users' phones somehow capturing the soundtrack of the programs they watch.

The sample size is 15,000 people in San Francisco who may or may not remember to leave their phones near their laptops/television.

It's baffling to me how so many people are so quick to buy this for fact.

Jessica Jones is a DISTANT 2nd place when compared to Daredevil.

The characters weren't as enjoyable, except for Killgrave. Tennant MADE that show, but unfortunately won't be back.

The "superhuman" powers were not acted out nor edited very well. Ritter's pre-jump and cut edit to her landing on a higher platform were always gimmicky and cheap feeling. Plus when Ritter threw someone around it felt very cheesy.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Krysten Ritter... ADORE HER... but she could have really used a better action coach for the series.
