LEGION Showrunner Noah Hawley Says Comic Storylines Won't Influence The Second Season

Ahead of season one's finale, Legion showrunner Noah Hawley discussed what to look for - and what not to expect - going into the show's recently announced second season. Read on for more...

After an intense round of episodes, the first season of FX's Legion will come to a close this week. While the series has been a departure from what many might expect from an X-Men television show, last week's episode embraced its comic-related roots with the reveal that the Devil with Yellow Eyes/Lenny Busker is the menacing Marvel villain, Shadow King, along with the expected confirmation that David is the son of Professor Charles Xavier (though he wasn't mentioned by name).

With the series confirmed for a second season and the premise now established, one might think that the series could dive deeper into a comic-inspired storyline. However,  showrunner Noah Hawley plans to tell David's story his own way, though he doesn't rule out familiar elements for fans along the way.

“I think as we do with Fargo, I think fans who are really familiar with the at world, they really appreciate certain connections and a sense of being rewarded for knowing the stories so well,” Hawley told media outlets in a conference call (via CBR). “But at the same time, my goal was always to sort of use this character as a way to have a conversation and tell a story that was my story, that was interesting to me, and to try to get at the heart of what this character is and [what] this journey is for him, not literally sort of reenacting issues of the comic book, or storylines from the comic book. So, I don’t think you’ll see the show suddenly look to the comics for storylines,” Hawley added, “but you may see ideas or characters or images that are familiar to you.”

As for a eventual appearance from David's father, Hawley cautioned that while it's a story topic that will be further addressed, fans probably shouldn't expect Xavier to show up any time soon. “I think that’s something we’re definitely going to approach,” he told reporters. “It’s a creative conversation, but it’s also a sort of corporate conversation, you know, on some level, in terms of the movie studio and their relationship to the X-Men and the characters they want in the movies and want to protect potentially. And were we to want to have Professor X on the show, or even Patrick Stewart on the show, James McAvoy or one of those actors, is a conversation both with the actor and with the studio. So, I don’t know, I haven’t really dived into that quandary yet, but certainly I need to start thinking about it.”

Legion's
first season concludes March 29, 2017.

@RancidBane - I'm waiting for the full season to be finished so I can binge it, I'm really excited because everyone really seems to rave about it! However is it at all connected to the rest of the x universe? Like I've seen things where it says it is, other where it says it is not? Are there name drops cameos or anything? Regardless if it is or isn't I'm still stoked to watch it.

@MRjordansurf - I would say it isnt. They don't really name drop anyone just half ass references that lead the hardcore comic fans to know they are tipping their hats to the comics. It is more of a stand alone thing that runs great on its own. I highly recommend it. Just be prepared it gets weird and trippy.

@MRjordansurf - There have been no indications that this takes place in the movie universe however no contradictions either as far as I know. I think it's safe to assume that it is it's own universe though, but only time will tell.

Also the season finale is this week so get ready to binge it! It truly is great.

Really strong first two episodes and great vibe on this show, but the writing takes a nosedive when it's not Hawley. I wish they'd worked out a True Detective situation, where Hawley wrote the whole thing. He's probably got his hands full with Fargo though, which looks great.

In any event, well worth a watch and a step in a really strong direction, when comic properties are really starting to blur.

@BestAtWhatIDo - its still his oberarching story, he just didnt write each script. The finale is his though.

@Ryguy88 - Right, and I like that story, but some of the dialogue in the other episodes is so bland and clunky. Doesn't have his wit.

@BestAtWhatIDo - yea I have to agree. I still think it is a good series but hard not to notice the best written episodes were Hawley. Also have to agree he is probably busy with Fargo because that has been such a critical hit I am assuming it is more important that he spend more time on those episodes.

Fargo might be the best show on TV the past couple years and Im a big thrones fan among many other shows. Fargo has just been so good from the writing all the way down to the acting and cinematography so Its hard to beat. I am not sure if youve seen the trailer for season 3 but its looking awesome judging by that, cannot wait for it to start

@deadlyClass - I actually just starting watching Fargo this week so Im only 7 eps in but its great so far! I caught up on Better Call Saul last week to get ready for season 3. If you havent watched that one I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Breaking Bad and that style of TV.

@Ryguy88 - yea I wasnt so much surprised how much I liked better call saul but I guess I forgot just how many great characters they could easily use to beef up the story a bit between mike, gus, the salamanca crew and the twin cousins. Very excited for the next season of saul.

And yea fargo is so good. Its funny because I loved season 1 and didnt think 2 could get better but I feel like season 2 was as good which is always a tough feat to keep quality high over multiple seasons. Good tv coming up, thats what I love when one show ends it may suck but next thing you know fargo and saul are on, and so on
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 4/4/2017, 2:09 PM
@deadlyClass - i just finished season 2. After the first few eps I was a bit bummed that it was a prequel and essentially no returning characters from the first season but by the end I would say it was just as good as the first.

Fargo and Saul and then GOT!
deadlyClass
deadlyClass - 4/4/2017, 2:29 PM
@Ryguy88 - definitely felt the same. I was following along form season 1 so I had the courtesy of knowing to at least expect that. So it was a bit of a let down, but dont forget mollys dad was technically Patrick wilson which was a cool tie in. Also there is a tie in at the end of season 2 into season 1.
But you are right it is a let down to miss out on those characters but they certainly did a good job of making new ones to attach too.

Haha couldnt agree more, fargo saul will hold me over so I dont go crazy waiting for thrones
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 4/4/2017, 5:16 PM
@deadlyClass - After watching all of season 2 I wouldnt even call it a let down. Although I would like ti see more of the chatacters from season 1 the new ines broughy into season 2 were just as good. And Molly's dad was a great protagonist.

Im a big movie fan but TV these days mostly kicks their ass.

@MeAreLegend - Okay I have to ask. Everywhere in the credits I see Marvel Television and FX but nowhere other than distribution do I see any mention of Fox. Why is everyone treating it as if Fox is the one to thank for the direction or quality of the show when all they do is distribute it?
AidsIhave
AidsIhave - 3/28/2017, 1:11 PM
@CryinFist - FX is a subsidiary to 20th Century Fox if I'm not mistaken and I think Fox were the ones that was pushing for a show to get made.

if he says that he needs to star thinking about Charles appearing, then it means he will definetly appear on second season, instead of not appearing anytime soon.

Its the closest to a confirmation Noah will say.

Man I LOVE this show. So beautiful. Still I thought I'd figured it all out but I went back and watched them all again and realised jot as many loose ends had been tied up by the shadow king revelation. It's the small things I'm confused about.
What was the deal with the world angriest boy? Did his father actually read him that? If not, why did the shadow king put it in his memories? What does it represent?

When david takes his sister to his house and probes her about being adopted, he's acting very malicious and clearly Lenny is controlling him. So why is he/she asking what her secret is when she already knows he's adopted? And why does he act incredibly suprised, and hurt? Is he david or lenny?

What's the deal with Lenny and Benny? Why replace Benny with Lenny in all his memories? And the shadow king said benny was one of his guises, so was Benny ever real?

In the pilot, who burns all the staff outside the pool? And takes the buzzer that would kill david from the interregator guy's hand? None of the characters seem to have fire powers, and the telekinesis guy is outside so why is the button gone when the guy goes to press it?

What is the deal with dogs in the pilot? There's a cage with a dog in red light that theyre keeping in the surveillance tent with the eye and the interregator. They keep zooming on it and alluding to it and nothing ever happens with it? And its a different dog to King. Also the Eye is carving a dog from wood and gives it to David.

Great show but there are a lot of things that go unexplained.
ReverseFlasher
ReverseFlasher - 3/28/2017, 6:34 AM
@connorblaze - i bet some of these will be answered.

I think there was a benny, and they meant the shadow king was him in the memories, not in reality. Davids gf interacted with benny so it was a real person, and the SK is just taking his place during memories to influence the characters sifting through his memories, to distort the memories to hide himself, and during the parts where lenny has conversations with david, as a means to help control davids conscious actions when SK isnt in true control.
ElDarkside
ElDarkside - 3/28/2017, 12:59 PM
@connorblaze - i'm right with you being that the show is the best show on television. That said I did go back and watch that episode where the dog was under the cloak in the cage and then the creepy weird eye guy gave the statue to "watch" DAVID. I'm thinking of weird I guy has some cyanic or mental powers that he can transfer into inanimate objects or possibly animals such as dogs. As you said I hope they at least touch on this in the finale but I won't be upset if they don't. Everything else they've done is just fantastic!! And I loved at the end of the most recent episode they showed the shadow king punch through the casket meaning that he's going to get out relatively soon…

What's a great opportunity, since so much takes place in the mind or ethereal plane is...

...you could have BOTH Xavier's showing up to David.

If that was financially possible I don't know.
