LOKI: Tom Hiddleston Didn't Know A Disney+ Series Was In His Future When He Shot AVENGERS: ENDGAME

Loki hits Disney+ next month, and Tom Hiddleston has now elaborated on when he was made privy to plans for the series while detailing the lack of answers he received while on the set of Avengers: Endgame.

Tom Hiddleston's time as Loki seemingly came to an abrupt end in Avengers: Infinity War when the God of Mischief was throttled by Thanos. However, that wasn't the last we saw of the villain, as an alternate timeline version of the character returned in Avengers: Endgame.

Thanks to Earth's Mightiest Heroes playing around with time-travel, Loki was able to escape with the Tesseract, and that's where we pick up with him in the Loki TV series coming to Disney+ early next month.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hiddleston admitted that he believed Infinity War was it for him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "It felt very, very final, and I thought, 'Okay, that's it. This is Loki's final bow and a conclusive end to the Odinson saga.'"

When shooting on Endgame rolled around, the actor still hadn't been told what the plans was for his character, and you'd best believe he had some questions. "Where'd he go? When does he go? How does he get there? These are all questions I remember asking on the day, and then not being given any answers." Marvel Studios kept him in the dark, and the answer didn't come until 2018 when Infinity War hit theaters and he was told a solo series was in the works.

"I probably should not have been surprised, but I was," the actor says. "But only because Infinity War had felt so final."

Kevin Feige adds, "[That scene] was really more of a wrinkle so that one of the missions that the Avengers went on in Endgame could get screwed up and not go well, which is what required Cap and Tony to go further back in time to the '70s. I think the notion that we had left this hanging loose end with Loki gave us the in for what a Loki series could be. So by the time [Endgame] came out, we did know where it was going."

Now, all eyes will be on Loki when his series premieres next month and the God of Mischief finds himself forced to work for the Time Variance Authority. We're bound to get some answers when it comes to what it means for this version of Loki to be in the MCU again (not having experienced the events of Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok, he was never redeemed for his villainous past).

Loki premieres on Disney+ on June 9.

@Matador - Looks good, but what about She Hulk? A little bit of comedy sounds nice...

@Turtlestrong - Honestly I forgot about that only cause I haven't seen the trailers yet.

Liked both WandaVision and Falcon and Winter Soldier but didnt think they were on par with stuff like Daredevil, Jessica Jones season 1 and Luke Cage Season 2

@dracula - Arguably it'd be tough to match since each of the Netflix shows had the luxury of a "full season" run.

@dracula - they definitely haven’t made anything yet that comes close to Daredevil or Jessica Jones S1

@MrDandy - I feel like Daredevil and Jessica Jones really understood how to make a TV show where Marvel Studios just doesn't yet. They made 6 hour movies (WandaVision is arguable but the final episode is literally a film's climatic battle). The one trade off is that the Marvel Studios shows don't spend too much time on characters that eventually just become grating like every side character in Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

I am curious to see if this show discusses the power vacuum in Loki's timeline after Thanos left it to stop the Avengers in their timeline.

@mehhhh - well Thanos came from a different time so pretty sure Thanos leaving would be a different timeline than the one Loki is in

@dracula - yeah you’re right. Loki disappeared in 2012 whereas Thanos (and his entire army) disappeared in 2014. So two different timelines. But it could still potentially come up since I imagine the TVA monitors all timelines.

@BloopBlorp2 - I have a feeling the “What If?” episode where Ultron gets the stones instead of Thanos could conceivably be set in the 2014 timeline, in this case. 🤔

@mehhhh - Think maybe this is where Kang the Conqueror will come in? He'll have a bone to pick with the Avengers for screwing everything up for a few timelines?

I mean...it has always felt strange that Cap. could just return an infinity stone and thats it. He'd have to go through his own series of adventures to successfully make it seem like the stones never left, feels impossible for one person to do, so hopefully there are consequences to the absence of all the stones, even briefly.

As interested as I am to see the show, it does kind of suck that they couldn’t even wait a little bit before brining the character back..

@DaHyro - To be fair it's not like they can wait a few years when you're having to deal with aging.

@Reeds2Much - They totally could, though. This is Marvel we’re talking about. They’d find a way around it through CGI or a story reason (like he was in a TVA prison for years until they needed him).

Plus, they did it with Better Call Saul

everything I see for that show so far..

I think it'll be the best one of the three
#1 Loki
#2 Falcon/WinterSoldier
#3 Wandavision

On the one hand Loki messing shit up again does feel like a good Loki ending to give (while also giving him a hero's death in IW), I agree we really shouldn't have been surprised we're gonna see it explored anyway

Excited for this. Really enjoyed WandaVision but found FatWS disappointing overall (even if it was solid)

@MrDandy - im surprised you found it disappointing, even tho i havent seen any of the disney+ shows. what was underwhelming about it ?

@hazapez - just compared to the captain America series, it doesn’t hold up. I still gave it a 7/10.

Mostly the villains really suck. Zemo and Walker are great but they feel secondary (which makes the narrative feel unfocused). Instead of them being the big bads we instead are stuck with the flagsmashers who have ill defined goals and motivations and aren’t interesting, compelling, or much of a threat as they’re basically a bunch of teenager with super soldier serum. People Bucky and Sam should be able to handle with ease.

They feel like the type of villain-of-the-week characters something like Agents of Shield would have used for 1 episode. It doesn’t help a big part of their storyline was cut because of the pandemic, making them even more ineffective at driving the narrative. As a result the whole story feels pretty scattershot. Also the show feels very light on action, meandering, and TV quality for the middle episodes.

Keep in mind these are just my negatives. I did give the show a positive review overall despite my disappointment

i love how feige is being humble when he says theyre essentially winging it. but at the same time, i just love how the encompassing story is all just a super natural progression of whats come before and is to come.
