MS. MARVEL Directors Believe A Decision On Season 2 Won't Be Made Until After THE MARVELS Is Released

Ms. Marvel remains Marvel Studios' best-reviewed TV show, so why haven't we heard anything about a second season? Filmmaking duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah share their take on Kamala Khan's MCU future!

Warner Bros. Discovery's widely criticised decision to scrap Batgirl means that movie is what most people now think about when they see Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah's names.

However, before they supposedly delivered an "unreleasable" take on Barbara Gordon, they helmed some of the best episodes of Ms. Marvel. As you might expect, that left many fans questioning the studio's claims they'd shot a movie bad enough that it will never be allowed to see the light of day!

While El Arbi and Fallah have said they would be open to returning to the DC Universe, it's hard to believe they would ever trust Warner Bros. again. However, seeing as Ms. Marvel was such a hit for Disney+ and Marvel Studios, might they consider returning for season 2?

"We’re waiting for 'The Marvels,' so that will decide what the next step will be," El Arbi tells The Playlist. "So we’re very much looking forward to that. I can’t wait to see it, man. It’s great to see the trailers and to see the whole family back there and Iman Vellani doing great work, so looking forward to that."

He adds, "Well, you know, if they ask us to come back to 'Ms. Marvel,' we love the universe, we love those characters, and Iman, and all of the other supporting actors there, so it would be an honor to come back and explore some more."

"There is a Moroccan superhero we forgot to name that exists, so we can go there. And, you know, we love ‘Blade.’ Our buddy Yann Demange is now doing 'Blade.' If Yann doesn’t want to do the second movie, we’re still there. And 'Deadpool' - we’re always there for 'Deadpool.' If there’s a fourth one, we’re also game, so if they call us, we’re good."

These two clearly want to dive back into the world of superheroes and we're sure Kamala Khan's story won't end after a team-up with Captain Marvel and Photon! A second season would give Marvel Studios the opportunity to better explore the hero's place in the MCU and what she does next after working alongside her idol.

Ms. Marvel season 1 was a six-episode origin story, so another batch of episodes can bring some of her villains from the comics into this shared world and perhaps even dive into what it means for this teenager to be a mutant!

What are your hopes for Ms. Marvel's future on screen?

Makes sense but I was hoping for a new season.

The episodes directed by El Arbi and Fallah were great, hope they come back (and that WB does right by them and gives em another franchise!)

At this point, Marvel/Disney is trying to outrun DC/WB but unfortunately in a bad way.

This show had heart. I think a second season would be good. I just really wish they kept her original powers. This "bangle" generated power thing feels so, "blegh".

@PC04 - maybe they will say the bangle just activated her mutant powers, so she won't have to rely on it moving forward?..and i also loved the heart of this show

@soupysales - They probably will say something like that with the bangle. Depends on what they ens up doing with them after "The Marvels" as they seem to be playing a big role in the movie based on the trailers with the bad girl having the other one. They could end up having to destroy them because they're too powerful or something but then Kamala discovers she still has her powers and doesn't need the bangle. Or something like that.

"We only care about money, no money, no sequel" some asshole at Disney, here's looking at you Kevin

@bobevanz - yes, amazingly disney is in the business of money making. I know, they've been forgetting that fact recently.

@bobevanz - Why would anyone make a sequel of something if the two appearances of the character have already not made them money?

I hope so, not only does Iman seem like a super nice person, but she's also a fan like the rest of us and deserves more screen time!

I also really liked learning more about the history of India, Pakistan and Partition
Origame
Origame - 9/12/2023, 4:27 PM
@KaptainKhaos - id say give her a solo movie that soft reboots her. We don't need to continue the show. Just something to keep her in the franchise.

The fact she regularly argues with feige about how the mcu isn't earth 616 is enough for me to want her to stay for the long haul.

bkmeijer1 - 9/12/2023, 4:35 PM
@Origame - why soft reboot? That's just unnecessary. The more easy option is just to not mention the show then
Origame
Origame - 9/12/2023, 5:29 PM
@bkmeijer1 - ...so a soft reboot? Because what you described is a soft reboot. It's when the previous continuity happened, but is largely ignored.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 9/13/2023, 2:37 AM
@Origame - that's not how I'd describe a soft reboot. Soft reboot in me eyes is just recasting secondary characters and changing bits of backstory (and a full reboot is to start over with a completely new cast and story)

I don't think this movie will outright flop at the box office, but I also don't know if it'll do well enough to justify an entire season follow up. The movie is releasing in a time where not only does it have to be good, but also deal with the burn out the general audience is feeling towards the comic book genre.

We had a decent run with comic movies everyone, but it really does seem like the genre may be in its last legs.

Everything goes in cycles. The CBM genre had a good 15-20 years of dominance.

It certainly won’t go away. But 6-9 movies and a ridiculous number of shows every year isn’t sustainable.

If these studios really want to prevent or delay the downfall of the genre it will take a better management of the quality of the output as well as balancing the quantity of releases.

All these smaller characters getting their own properties is watering down the genre. Maybe not to diehard hard fans like many on this site, but to the GA.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 9/12/2023, 4:21 PM
@mountainman - Exactly. GA really isn't going to understand why -- in one movie -- there's a Captain Marvel and a Ms. Marvel and another Captain Marvel aka Photon or whatever Monica's alter ego is. Incidentally and purposefully, all are women. And the super-villain is a woman. GA isn't going to like that. Studio has done a damn good job of biting the hands that feed it.

It effectively ended with Endgame, people were overall satisfied with the story and viewed it as a natural stepping off point. The gap in content gave people time to access whether they wanted to continue being invested and many decided not to before any of the poor quality Phase 4/5 stuff was released.

• Disney is generally the last to learn and will likely expect Secret Wars (2028?) to generate a revived interest, pushing into Phase 7 and probably ending the MCU as a whole in 2030-2032

• Warner Bros will likely give it the first two or three films in the Gunn universe before deciding to reduce it down to just Batman films again around 2028

• Sony will likely end up doing Spider-man 4 (2025?) and Spider-man 5 (2027) with Marvel but then do Spider-man 6 (2029) separately using their Sinister Six before rebooting Spider-man a few years after.

The appeal and interest is dead, but the films will continue to be made partially because they are too stubborn to accept they need to change focus.
mountainman
mountainman - 9/12/2023, 5:42 PM
@Scarilian - Stuff like Batman, Spider-man, X-Men and Avengers will likely still have a market. It’s the lesser known characters that will struggle going forward.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 9/12/2023, 5:50 PM
@mountainman - It's not just the oversaturation, either. Some of the story decisions from phases 4 and 5 are just baffling.

Kang is the next big bad, but you have Ant-Man more or less solo him in Quantumania? Weeeeird choice. Contrast that with teasing Thanos in cameo appearances here and there until finally unleashing him in Infinity War. Fans couldn't wait to see what he could do. With Kang, we've seen it and were already underwhelmed.

All of the new heroes introduced post endgame are either a reskin of a previous hero (see Hawkeye, Black Widow, She-Hulk, Iron Heart, Captain America) or a hero with glowy powers (Shang-Chi, Ms Marvel, Photon, the Eternals). The exception would be Moon Knight, but his greatest appeal is wondering whether or not it's all in his head, so you can't really have him interacting with too many other characters, unless you want to ditch that aspect of the character.

Phase 4 was the phase to introduce the Fantastic Four. The actual Fantastic Four. It's such an obvious thing to do, that it blows my mind that they focused on these other inconsequential characters. Give us stretchy powers, rock man, invisibility, and flame on! Introduce the Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, of start bringing in the X-Men. People were so incredibly excited to have Spider-Man in the MCU so they can watch him interact with the Avengers. That same excitement would be there for all of the above characters. You can still introduce these smaller characters, but don't do all of them back to back to back. You've gotta mix them in with the heavy hitters you have access to now.

Instead, people watched out of obligation, rather than interest. The Internet blew up at the mention of "a scientist" in WandaVision, on the off chance that it was a reference to Reed Richards. And then there was the whole Quicksilver debacle.

It's all so frustrating in retrospect.

@mountainman -
The trouble is that Disney won't just pump out Avengers films, they'll intend to have phases between them and that's why the Avengers franchise will likely fall flat.

As for X-Men, people are still clinging to the Fox-Verse actors and characters. I doubt most are ready for what will no doubt be a non-comic accurate X-Men group promoting diversity and inclusion as the focus.

Batman has some strength to him, but we've seen in the past that damage can be done to his brand.

Spider-man is sort of an evergreen brand and Sony just stop making his movie and reboot each time it has a mixed or poor critical reception.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 9/12/2023, 3:53 PM
Aquaman and The Marvels will both deal the final blows to the genre. This isn't me saying either will be bad or anything. It's just obvious that people are not interested. There's been a steady decline in interest for DC and Marvel over the last two years. That isn't to say there isn't or won't be the occasional successful film. But gone are the days of the billion dollar superhero film.

I'd be surprised at this point if Avengers 5 can even hit 1B. Maybe if it was released today, but we still have like 3 years, and people are already over the Kang story.
Th3Batman
Th3Batman - 9/12/2023, 4:02 PM
@SheepishOne - @SheepishOne - Spider-man and Batman will continue to produce billion $$$ films. Outside of that though, you and @mountainman are probably right. Both Marvel and DC have gone out of the way to kill interest in the genre, interest that will likely never be regained. It's not just the fact that both companies put out more misses than hits, they've put out way too much content between movies and TV. The genre is no longer special anymore, it's over saturated.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 9/12/2023, 5:28 PM
@Th3Batman - I don't even know if Spider-Man and Batman will hit the B. Maybe Spider-Man.

I suppose The Batman 2 has a chance, but I still wonder. It will depend on who the villains are.

I don't think The Brave and the Bold will do much business at all. Reinventing Batman for like the seventh time in 20 years, right when the entire genre loses steam, doesn't bode well.

@SheepishOne - Most normies have long moved on. They have no idea what the Kang story and they didnt watch the D+ shows.
