MS. MARVEL Star Iman Vellani Comments On Decision To Make Kamala Khan A [SPOILER] In The MCU

This week's season finale of Ms. Marvel concluded with a surprising twist that will almost certainly have major implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward. Kamala Khan, an Inhuman in the comics, was revealed to be a mutant.

Though they didn't straight-up refer to Kamala as a mutant, Bruno told his friend that her powers stemmed from a "mutation" in her genes, and the classic X-Men Animated Series theme left little room for doubt.

This is a pretty significant retcon, and has proved to be somewhat controversial - especially among hardcore Inhumans fans. Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani, a self-professed Marvel Comics aficionado, was asked about the decision to alter Khan's origin during a Reddit AMA.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love the Inhumans, Black Bolt is my father," said the actress. "But I do think the MCU is in a very different place than the comics were and so we were actually able to go this way with Kamala.”

Vellani also admitted that Ms. Marvel's altered abilities were inspired by X-Men member Hisako Ichiki, aka, Armor. "We definitely took [inspiration] from Armor from the X-Men, but I like to think of it as a surge of energy which surrounds her as a layer of protection, i dont think she actually feels it like glass."

Although an alternate reality (838) Variant of Professor Xavier (Sir Patrick Stewart) appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, this makes Kamala Khan the first mutant to be officially introduced to the MCU proper. How her newfound status as one of the Children of the Atom impacts this shared world remains to be seen, but we may learn at least a little more when Ms. Marvel returns next year for The Marvels.

Love her as the character, but maaaaaan this show dropped the ball hard after the first two episodes. Perhaps the rumors of deleted scenes fleshing out the clandestines would have helped, but it was just all over the place the last four eps.

@ReverseFlasher - From what it seems like, The clandestines are the similar to those who reside in Ta Lo. It wouldn't surprise me if the warriors of Ta Lo are Chinese clandestines and in each culture they are called something different.

@ReverseFlasher - Outside of the Clan Destines I respectfully disagree. At to the CD's the 6 episode* limitation needs to be scrapped.

*each ep running 42 minutes more or less.

I don't mind the switch between being an Inhuman and a Mutant. I just don't want the mutants to have existed on Earth for so many years undetected and suddenly emerge but had zero emergence when Thanos blipped the universe. I do hope that something happens in Ant-Man Quantumania that somehow triggers the mutant gene in humanity and awakens their abilities. I just don't know how you can pull that off and still have Magneto have his concentration camp backstory.
