MS. MARVEL Star Iman Vellani Talks "MCU Secrets" And Shares First Clip From Episode 2

Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani met with Jimmy Fallon last night to talk "MCU Secrets" and comparing spoilers with Tom Holland. She also brought a first look at some new footage from Episode 2.

It's been a busy week for Iman Vellani, the 19 year-old star of Ms. Marvel, who visited The Tonight Show earlier this week to chat with Jimmy Fallon about landing the role of a lifetime. All smiles, Iman gushed about growing up a Marvel fan, her love of Robert Downey Jr, and about her aunt sending her a "Super Sketchy" casting call through WhatsApp that changed her life forever.

The young actress proved that she's a geek at heart, as she tells Jimmy about growing up obsessed with comics, doing special nail art for each new MCU release, dressing as Kamala Kahn for Halloween in high school, and even putting on elaborate presentations for her parents to get them up to speed for any new Marvel films.

After commenting that starring in Ms. Marvel was Iman's very first acting gig right out of high school, she responds with sly "Hell yeah!" and a sheepish grin. Pressing to know exactly how the process went down, Jimmy asked her to explain to the audience how she landed the role.

"My Aunt forwarded me a WhatsApp of the casting call. Super sketchy!", Iman explained. "I don't know what casting calls look like, but I'm like, obsessed with Marvel. Obsessed with Ms. Marvel. Read all of the comics in High School." Vellani would also add, "I sent in a very academic resume, and the only headshot I had... and I sent in my self-tape at like 3am... and the next day, I get a call."

Iman would further elaborate on the process and amazing feeling of video chatting with Kevin Feige when they confirmed that she'd landed the part. Jimmy pressed Iman about being in the MCU and what secrets she may know. "I know secrets! I know secrets! Well, I'd like to think that I know secrets. I don't know how much they're like, humoring me? But I think I know secrets." the fangirl turned lead actress would go on to say, "It's like power, you know? For some people it's like money and fame. For me, it's like MCU secrets."

When asked by Fallon if she knew any secrets beforehand that have since been spilled, Vellani recounted her first meeting with Tom Holland in which the Spider-Man: No Way Home star showed her a picture of himself with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

It looks like Kamala is having a ball living the hero life she's always dreamed of, but it may be safe to assume the lighthearted fun will not last long as the mysterious organization from the end of episode 1 closes in on the fledgling superhero.

I used to think WandaVision was Marvel achieving their highest level of creativity, and I don't think it's been dethroned yet, but Ms Marvel's so damn relentless in intentionality that I'm inclined to think it could one day end up being the other side of 'peak creativity' coin. It is fully modern, industrial and is clearly fashioned for millennials, yet everything from the camera placement to the emphasis on one-takes feels like it came from a different studio.

Hearing Iman's story is so interesting. Marvel casting a first time actress for probably their tonally quirkiest project and then deciding that *this* was the time to go all in with hand drawn animated visuals, eclectic camera techniques and all the other stuff they're going for is super interesting. I said after DS MoM that Marvel are really at their most comfortable as a studio, and this show feels like that statement is even truer.

Comparing this show to all the other marvel TV shows (and I like all of them, don't get me wrong)... makes you feel like there are some real talented people behind the scenes and the others were made by less confident show makers. They truly nailed the first episode

@Vigor - I definitely think some level of uncertainty on how far they could push things hindered Falcon and Winter Soldier, which was a story I loved but could also tell was juggling a bit too much. Same thing with Hawkeye and Moon Knights last episodes in smaller ways.

I think besides the confidence factor, there's also a budget factor. Ms Marvel doesn't have to pay Anthony Mackie or Elizabeth Olsen money to play leads, and it doesn't even have to pay Ethan Hawke or Owen Wilson supporting actor money. That means they can spend more on technical stuff as well as feature more CG. It's one of the things I really like about them introducing new characters on Disney+: they can still do off the wall castings and repurpose the cast budget elsewhere

A+ first episode. Flew by watching it.

Somewhat OT: Anyone have a link to (or would like to share) a comprehensive, up-to-date list of all ACTIVE MCU heroes? Could not seem to find one easily by Googling. Curious what the real number is and would be fun to look at for team discussion purposes.

@Fogs - Thank you that is helpful. Probably not going to easily find anything that is filterable. Would be fun to filter out inactives/deceased, 'allies' versus 'heroes' (though obvi a grey area), announced but not yet appeared, etc. And then the same for MCU antagonists/villains.

We are seeing more and more a certain segment of people call this the M"SHE"U, and how it's virtue signaling and all this stuff. Which is disheartening to see especially when a movie doesn't quite land like captain marvel. I'm happy to see that this show is getting glowing reviews and I hope it makes the skeptics thinj twice before they speak negatively of MCU having a more diverse cast

I genuinely like Iman so even if I’m iffy on some of the stuff they’ve done so far in her show, I want to see more of her.

Surprised to say I like show more than moonknight it’s fun but it better have good villian not those two office news reporter rejects as villains watching on phone after credit scene show be little be disappointing with bad villian .,

Good show but her day dreaming imagination is little distracting watcher ride bike and see cat moving around on building sometimes watch scenes twice know what’s going on

@SpaceParanoids - More likely Quasar's Quantum Bands, not Mar-Vell's negabands, though they might just combine them. It did seem like she went to the Negative Zone for a second there, but it could be the
Quantum Realm.

Its unfortunate Mar-Vell has been written out of the MCU but its understandable. He is mostly known for facing Thanos then staying dead from cancer. Thanos already had enough going on and Jane is likely getting the stay dead cancer treatment. It makes sense that this point to use Mar-Vell as the prestige actor influencing the hero role.

My hope is we get Genis-Vell as a villain in Marvels or Captain Marvel 3. He could fill in for classic Mar-Vell while bringing some fresh cosmic awareness madness to the table.

@Magus - They could have easily used Mar-vell as having already been dead in Captain Marvel and be the guide for her, but for some reason they felt it had to be a woman.

@SpaceParanoids - Well, the female hero inspiration fit much better with the feminist themes than if a man inspired her. These are films after all and themes are a little more important than straight fan service.

Saying they will never use Genny is incredibly short sighted. Captain Marvel doesn't have many villains and he has made a comeback in the comics which like to synergize with the movies. Also, it will excite the fans.

Genny would be far more interesting than Mar-Vell in the MCU. Mar-Vell is more of a martyr than a well developed comic character and is incredibly dry and outdated if adapted as is.

Except that the overtly feminist theme was fan service, for a specific group of fans.

It doesn’t hurt to have a man inspire you especially when he turned out to be holding her back and complicit in restricting her powers. Having the evil male is what they look for in the feminist theme.

And that’s where you might have a point regarding Genny. If the male is evil then you are most likely going to see him as her rival.

Feminism isn't fan service. It's just the simple fact that men and women are equal. To be anti-feminist is simply saying you think men deserve more than women.

My advice is get off YouTube. If a talking head makes you frustrated with/hate a certain group it is propaganda and you are being played a fool.

The entire movie was about Captain Marvel a female in the spotlight the entire time.

I am talking about comic book accuracy and you were the one who injected that it was okay to race swap Mar-Vell because of the “feminist” message.

It sounds ti me like you are trying to pander to feminists for some reason. Maybe you think it earns you some amount of social points. Maybe you think some will like you better. Whatever your motivation I find it interesting that you ignored my point.

Once again, There is nothing wrong with Mar-Vell guiding Danvers and being a white make, especially since he was trying to control her from realizing her full potential, similar to how Jude Law’s character was.
And the theme in the movie was that the antagonists were white males, which was made quite clear, so Mar-Vell being the White Male antagonist would follow suit.

You skipped over all of that and all you did was expose your prejudice which I find both disturbing and sad.
