Screenwriter Drew Pearce Opens Up On Marvel Studios' Runaways Delay!

The attached screenwriter for Marvel's Runaways big screen adaptation, which was delayed, has now revealed the delay's reason being The Avengers. Check it out what he had to say!

Before filming kicked off for Marvel's superhero extravaganza The Avengers, the studio had another ensemble film scheduled for filming early this year; the big screen adaptation of Runaways. Despite having a director attached, Peter Sollett, a few of the roles filled, and a solid script penned by Drew Pearce, the studio put the film on hold for "unspecified" reasons. However, speaking with The Playlist at Empire's Big Screen fest, Pearce reveals the assumed reason why.

“Basically, ‘The Avengers’ came along and everything else at Marvel got put on hold for a year. But the script is there, we’re good go,” Pearce said. “It’s kind of like [being] at the airport when you’re waiting for your slot to take off with Marvel, and we’re hoping we get a slot next year. Fingers crossed. They’re very happy with it, so hopefully it happens.”

While it was revealed The Avengers director, Joss Whedon, was in contention to helm, Peter Sollett will be directing whenever Marvel gets things back on track. And cameras could begin rolling as early as 2013, being that Disney have two undisclosed films slated for release year 2014. And regarding Runaways' cast, Akeelah And the Bee actress Keke Palmer revealed she was a offered an undisclosed role, while relativity unknown TV actor Lucas Cruikshank revealed he auditioned, and Jumping The Broom's rapper-turned-actor Romeo Miller campaigned for the role of Alex Wilder.

Runaways
, based on the comic book about the children of super villains who try to use their evil powers for heroic purposes, follows a group of teenagers who discover that their parents, an amalgam of mob bosses, time-travelers, dark wizards, mad scientists, alien invaders and telepathic mutants, are part of an evil crime syndicate. The series is known for it's solid characterization and its ability to tackle dark elements while maintaining a comedic tone. The stories take places in mainstream Marvel continuity and several major Marvel characters have made appearances alongside the teens.

Am I the only one who thinks it would work better as a TV show, but we'll wait and see how turns out as a movie I guess.

A movie would be awesome! i just love the runaways.
But, a tv show would be better probably....This would be a great franchise though...very teen relatable, but still very nerdy haha

Hopefully it'll not be too teen-relatable.

Seriously, some parts of it got so cringe-worthy.

No, Gert, kids aren't the ones with the most responsibility and no, they don't keep everyone in line.

I LOVE the runaways, but this is kinda a stupid move. The comic relied on so much of MArvels past such as villians and heroes, heck one of them is a skrull and the other one is the son of ultron. How are they to play this out if the MCU is just getting started

Movie please. No low budget tv garbage. Superheroes should only be on tv as cartoons.

Only read a little of the series. Never got into it, because it seemed sort of... young? Not trolling, but it wasn't as dark/gritty as I prefer my comics. Maybe it'll be a good movie though?

I think it would work good as a movie, and it could use that release date of May 16, 2014. Good idea to do a teen superhero movie, espically one that comes out close to when schools let out for summer. It would be something diffrent for a superhero movie, and also would be a good and diffrent direction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take. One that doesn't lead up to the Avengers, but makes small minor refrences to the Avengers.

I love the idea of a Runaways movie, and I love the idea of a television series even better! As soon as I picked up the first volume, I couldn't put it down. I hope they start making new issues soon. The last one come out in 2009!

@the17thrunaway, i agree. superheroe tv shows are better animated. DC proves that, plus I love Avengers: EMH

Am I possibly the only one who doesn't want this to happen? Seriously, this is something of television materiel; don't see how grand a Runaways movie will be like.

Next thing you know, we'll get a Power Pack movie if this would happen.

@BigK

Tons of comic movies are popular with the teen generation .. and the Runaways is aimed at teens, like, 15/16 + , it's a really well-written interesting Comic book, it's a fun comic and is really great. I see nothing wrong with having an amazing comic team on the big screen.

SugarYumYum
SugarYumYum - 8/14/2011, 3:43 PM
Haven't read the comic but I think it's good move and they should definitely push forward with it. CherryBomb's right: Teens dig CBM's yet Spider-man was probably the closest thing they could relate to. Give'em an early summer Superhero movie, put in some good up and coming talent with a couple of familiar faces and you've got a hit.

About the rumored casts:

Keke Palmer: Hell yes. She's suffering from the stupid overacting they make young actors do on Disney and Nick TV shows but in movies, she's great. Get her please.

Fred: HELL TO THE NO. He isn't funny and annoying as shit. Please find someone better.

Romeo: Errrrr... he was ok in Jumping the Broom. Kinda neutral on him.

Except there are like ALOT of really good super heroes out there that have potentital at being a good movie.

I would love to see a Heroes for Hire movie out more than a Runaways movie.
BigK1337

@SugarYumYum

There is also the X-Men for teens to relate; but people are under the idea that only adults are members of the X-Men even though it started out with teens.
CherryBomb
CherryBomb - 8/14/2011, 4:02 PM

@BigK Runaways has a great potential! it's aimed at a teen demographic, teens are the people who watch these movies the most. Heroes for Hire isn't necessarily a 'teen' aimed concept, I agree HforH would be great but I don't think Runaways has any less potential than that.

@Sugar totally! I love Keke (: she's great, I could see her as female Xavin :D

I'd totally have Mae Whitman as Gert

gamergump
gamergump - 8/14/2011, 8:41 PM
I might be the only person who does not think this would be a very good TV show. The first volume of Runaways was great and amazing. That is what they need to make the movie of. Once you get past that with Joss Whedon's run on the story starts going down hill. I really don't see how this could sustain a quality show for more that 3 seasons. The cost of effects would probably make this a costly show for what most likely is an ABC Family show.

I want to see this movie, as a one shot great movie.
