WandaVision was the first MCU TV series released on Disney+ and, for many fans, it still ranks among the best. The very definition of water cooler television, it got people talking and theories soon started swirling about who the show's real big bad must be.

It was obvious from early on that "Agnes" and Agatha Harkness were one and the same but, along the way, there were hints the demonic Mephisto might be pulling the strings. When the final credits rolled, the Marvel Universe's devil was still nowhere to be seen, though he is expected to appear in Ironheart (played by Sacha Baron Cohen).

Talking to Inverse, WandaVision director Matt Shakman reflected on the experience of making a TV show for Marvel Studios and chimed in on those Mephisto theories.

"Marvel was interested in doing television the way that they did movies," the filmmaker recalls. "We were telling a richer, more character-focused story than the movies can. Almost like those comic runs that I love that go on longer than any movie could ever possibly contain."

"There were some deep readings of the text that led to certain conclusions that were wrong," Shakman adds. "Mephisto was never a part of our plan. So that was a head-scratcher. But hey, he's a great character."

It appears those nods to Mephisto were imagined and while a retcon could somehow tie him to what happened in Westview, it doesn't seem as if that was something Marvel Studios has been planning.

For Shakman, WandaVision is now in his rearview. After Jon Watts departed the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, he stepped in to take charge of the project and is in the midst of pre-production (casting news is expected to head our way before the year ends). Talking about the movie, the director shared some of the comic books which have inspired his approach to Marvel's First Family.

"I’m not so much looking at the other movies. I'm looking at the comics themselves. I'm a huge comic book fan. I’ve been a big fan of the Fantastic Four since I was a kid. So going back to Kirby and Lee and Byrne and following all the way up to what's happening, certainly Hickman and Wade and Ryan North, what he's been doing.|

"I'm trying to figure out who these characters are to me and how to bring them to life in the best possible way, and that's really where I've started and how we've approached it."

It feels like these characters are in safe hands with Shakman. While very little has been revealed about the movie since it was first announced, the prevailing belief online seems to be that the team will battle Galactus.

Fantastic Four is set to be released in theaters on May 2, 2025.

casting a comedian for Mephisto killed any interest I had for seeing the character on the big screen.

@harryba11zack -

You never had any interest to begin with.

Not any positive one, at least.

@DrReedRichards - I have interest and Sascha Baden Cohen is an odd choice for the role. Maybe he will play it straight, as he’s actually a decent actor, but I feel like they may make Mephisto more comedic than he should be. A little comedy is fine, but he should also be scary and menacing.

@DrReedRichards - Mephisto is an interesting character when done right. He should be introduced when they do Johnny Blaze or dr doom. Having him in Ironheart makes no sense.

@mountainman -

I think his mannerisms are fitting to make him unsettling in a creepy kind of way, instead of generically horrifying like a try-hard demon.

@harryba11zack -.

See, I wanna believe those words, but then I look at your username and profile pic and remember who you are, and all good faith goes out the window.

Assuming I had any good faith, that is.

@harryba11zack - I can see him being a surprising shock if handled properly. He can even be more terrifying if he has a nonchalant demeanor.

As everything else, the writers room development can make or break this character.

@DrReedRichards - I get that. I do think he has the acting chops for it, I just have that potential concern that they will write it too humerus or goofy for my taste because he was cast.

Only time will tell.

@DrReedRichards - And when I look at your username and profile pic I remember that you were dumb enough to tell Wanda about Black Bolt's source of power.

@mountainman - I mean Mephisto is consistently portrayed as a dark humoured, sometimes even somewhat camp villain in the comics. He’s like a demon Mr Sinister, or at least had been for the last decade. So it’s not really odd casting at all

These threads peaked with WandaVision. The discourse, theories, and overall quality of conversation was 2nd to none. I'm looking forward to finally hearing some official castings

@MyCoolYoung - Users on this site became too cynical, political and obsessed with the MCUs failings instead of it's successes, so it became a challenge to have any meaningful discourse.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 11/9/2023, 2:57 PM
@comicfan100 - that's exactly what I've been saying. It's ok to dislike something and it's ok to critique it but they've went away from even discussion what they dislike in a meaningful way.

It's starting not to make sense to come here anymore

@MyCoolYoung - Reddit, for all of its issues, is a pretty good place to discuss the MCU. r/marvelstudiosspoilers. It's not a total echo chamber, but you don't have to worry about some chud repeating how "woke" the "M-She-U" is.

@MyCoolYoung @comicfan100 - not only is that true about a lot of the users here now, a lot of the people that had reasonable comments, and humorous comments had enough and left. As you say criticism is fine, but when the thread is nothing but criticism about something they haven’t even seen yet, it gets really old really quick.

@comicfan100 - people use to talk bad about reddit all the time which made me apprehensive but it's no where near as bad as here. It's actually way better

@RolandD - I usually don't block anyone ever. I've never seen the point but these threads are getting ridiculous. It's either that or leave now. I like a lot of yall here.

Is that why waddles and Nomis left? Damn

ot successor to band of brothers and the pacific

mountainman
mountainman - 11/9/2023, 10:57 AM
@grif - Oh snap! Recently rewatched both and they still hold up well. The Pacific is a bit more sour and depressing, but I think that’s intentional.

I do wish they’d do something outside of just WWII, but I get that many more modern wars aren’t as romanticized so it would have to be more cynical and may not have as universal of appeal.

@grif - Yup. While this looks pretty, I am a bit skeptical that it might be too similar to Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
