We recently reported on the rather baffling announcement that Disney+'s first ever Marvel Cinematic Universe series, WandaVision, is set to debut on limited edition Steelbook... without any physical discs.

The set, which will include postcards, character cards, a folder, and exclusive release stickers, is currently due to hit retailers on September 27, with pre-orders starting on July 27 - but this appears to be news to Marvel Home Entertainment.

It's already been established that the Steelbook is not an officially licenced Marvel Studios product, however, Manta Lab does produce legitimate Blu-ray packaging with Marvel/Disney's approval.

“While Manta Lab is a legit licensee of Disney, and does create custom Steelbooks for Disney Blu-ray titles through Disney Consumer Products, the pre-order for a disc-less WandaVision was a surprise to some and we are looking into it as well as speaking to our partners in market," a Disney rep tells TV Line.

Though we hadn't heard of these disc-less sets before, WandaVision is not the first, and there does seem to be a market for them. We assume the idea is that fans can display the case as part of their collection, while Disney keeps the actual episodes right where they are on the streaming service.

Will we ever get physical releases of the Disney+ shows? When Kevin Feige was asked that very question back in 2021, he responded with a rather dismissive: "You can pay [Disney+] a very low fee per month and have access to something that you can put it on your TV whenever you want!"

"Marvel Studios' WandaVision blends the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision – two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban life – begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems."

In addition to Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as the leads, WandaVision stars Kathryn Hahn, Teyonah Parris, Debra Jo Rupp, Randall Park, and Kat Dennings. Following the success of the series, an Agatha: Coven of Chaos spin-off featuring the return of Hahn as Agatha Harkness was announced.

@inkniron - Yeah man! The ending was crazy in that. ALF had a similarly messed up ending with him getting caught by the government just as his ship was about to take him home.

And way back in the first episode the government had talked about how they wanted the alien so they could run tests on him and dissect him.

Lol They would never end shows like that now. Not kids shows anyway.

@Saga - with who. As unfortunate as it is disc are being phased out and instead of saying some false promises he is being blunt that you can pay for the streaming price and continue to watch the show there. It sucks but it is what it is and the demand is not there anymore

@BatmanBeenDrinking - Except many shows are being removed now when we were all told they would now be available forever in one location in perpetuity? Maybe Disney sells Marvel one day. Not impossible. ANY show or film can get memory holed now.

@Toonstrack - Yep, I did mean all the streaming services now, but I hope that means that physical media is back on the table. Again, Paramount puts all their Trek shows on disc, including Prodigy, which they just removed. They must be successful or they wouldn't be doing it. Disney take note.

Yeah, this was weird. I think Iger might come around to physical media, though. Paramount puts all its new Trek out on disc and still on streaming. I would buy most of the shows. Why kill a revenue stream? Streaming is NOT the cash machine they all expected. This is coming home to roost now.

As a collector of various things over the years, I definitely get the visual appeal of having "every" entry in the MCU organized on your shelf. But to not even include a digital download with the steelbook is wild to me.

The point of a collection is to either preserve or retain immediate access to an assortment of things you enjoy. A media-less steelbook does neither, unless you're just collecting physical cover art.
