WANDAVISION: Newly Revealed Set Photos Feature A S.W.O.R.D. Base, Vehicles, And More

It was recently revealed that WandaVision will now premiere this year rather than in 2021, but there's still a lot we don't know about the series, including why S.W.O.R.D are making an appearance.

In the comics, the organisation deals with extraterrestrial threats to world security and is the space-based counterpart of S.H.I.E.L.D., so it does make sense that they would be formed after the events of Avengers: Endgame. How that brings them into the world of the Scarlet Witch is hard to say, though, unless "extraterrestrial threats" also includes a hero with reality-warping powers!

Regardless, in this newly surfaced batch of set photos - which come our way courtesy of @atlanta_filming - we see more S.W.O.R.D.'s base and vehicles along with an imposing looking structure which some fans have speculated could be a containment chamber used to trap the out-of-control Wanda.

Time will tell on that front, but to take a look at these WandaVision set photos, either hit the "View List" button or, if that's not currently showing, use the "Next" button to click through page after page with no loading times!

S.W.O.R.D.'s Director is Abigail Brand but there's been no mention of the character being cast in WandaVision, so Marvel Studios could be holding off on introducing her for now.

Common sense says that the adult Monica Rambeau could be working for S.W.O.R.D. here, particularly if it means that she's able to find her mother's best friend and "aunt" Carol Danvers.

This looks like a base camp of some sort, but we don't know whether this is meant to be the organisation's actual base of somewhere Marvel is storing the show's vehicles as shooting continues!

That's an imposing looking structure, and it's hard not to wonder whether it's some sort of containment chamber. Many fans are convinced that this could be used to hold the Scarlet Witch!

Time will tell on that front, but it looks like S.W.O.R.D. is bringing an entire army to wherever WandaVision is set and they clearly believe that there's a threat big enough to warrant that.

S.H.I.E.L.D. has been missed since it fell back in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier...could it be that the TV series ABC wants from Marvel is Agents of S.W.O.R.D.? That would be pretty cool!

What do you guys think of these latest WandaVision set photos? Is it possible that containment chamber - if that's what it is - will be used to capture the Scarlet Witch during the series?

I remain entirely unconvinced that this series is just about Wanda going mad with reality warping powers. Nothing quite fits... MCU Wanda hasn’t had any such powers, she didn’t seem mad with grief at the end of Endgame, and the whole SWORD subplot doesn’t fit well with it at all (“Let’s introduce an organization tasked with defending Earth from extra-terrestrial threats in a series without any!”).

I think that there will be a villain in this... someone or something that ties it all together better than just witches. Chthon, maybe?

@Chewtoy - at least in terms of sword, since shield isnt around anymore, they may just treat sword like the new shield just with a bit more of an emphasis on aliens to account for threats like thanos.

@Origame - Perhaps, but some outside threat like Chthon (an Elder God with reality warping powers who has been trying to return to Earth’s dimension and figures heavily into Wanda’s comic origins) does a far better job of tying things together.

The classic Avengers tale from 1979 began the reveal of Magneto being her father (showing how she came to be adopted by the Maximoffs), explained how Chthon imbued her with a deep gift for sorcery at birth and pushed her to receive training from Agatha Harkness, and now was possessing her as a vessel to enter our dimension. (Also how he was last defeated by the High Evolutionary and his Knights of Wundegore before they left for space. The High Evolutionary is rumored to be in GoTG 3 as the creator of Rocket Raccoon.)

People keep leaning towards “Avengers Dissassembled” as the inspiration for this series, but the original tale of an all-powerful Wanda threatening reality offers a lot more material to build upon.

@Chewtoy - What do you mean Wanda didn't demonstrate such powers in Endgame? She came close to single-handily destroying Thanos near the end until he reigned down missiles on his own people to disrupt her attack. Scarlet Witch is a massive threat when her emotions are out of control.

I have that David Michelinie and John Byrnerun run where Wanda goes back to Wundagore. Incredible storytelling.

@KillerCroc357 - There was nothing reality-warping about those powers... she physically was crushing him with telekinesis.

As I said, people keep looking at this as an adaptation of “Avengers Disassembled”, where Wanda went mad with grief and changed reality with her powers. None of that fits in the MCU... Her powers aren’t chaos magic and reality warping, they’re telekinesis and (not seen since Age of Ultron) mental manipulation. She’s not mad with grief, from what we’ve seen. It would be weird for Agatha Harkness and witches to suddenly get involved in her life, and the extra-terrestrial defense agency SWORD has to be just general super-police instead. Thematically, nothing ties together.

But, if they use the classic Wanda Chthon storyline as inspiration, they can give Wanda reality warping powers (if needed... Chthon gave them to the comic character in the first place), have an extra-dimensional threat (which allows a thematic tie-in to Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness), introduce Agatha Harkness (as Chthon has been opposed by mystics throughout history), have a non-terrestrial threat for SWORD, and, I suspect, have the Vision be a lingering defense in Wanda’s mind helping her fight off the possession.

@Chewtoy - Pretty sure they're replacing Chthon with Nightmare. Hopefully this gets a season 2 though.

@soberchimera - Hell, I could easily see them using Dormammu just to cut down on the number of extra-dimensional godlike beings that want to take over the Earth.

Regardless, I really suspect that there’s a villain behind this series that hasn’t been revealed yet.

@Chewtoy - Well I mean, they're replacing Fu Manchu/Zheng Zhu with Mandarin in the Shang-Chi film, so I wouldn't be surprised if they used elements from Wundagore, but with a different villain.

@soberchimera - Yeah... nothing gets adapted exactly.

One other possible mark against Chthon is that the Darkhold (his version of the necronomicon, and a big part of the lore of the character) appeared in Agents of Shield, and my impression was always that AoS was free to use concepts and characters that Feige expressly had no interest in adapting in the films.

Now, maybe that’s changed as the MCU looks to add Blade and some other horror/monster concepts and the Darkhold was often involved in those.

@Chewtoy - you gotta let them do the stories they want to do. It cant be a matter of "this story vs that story". Maybe down the line they can do what you're claiming but its this story they're inspired by.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 1/27/2020, 5:49 AM
@Origame - I don’t follow what you’re saying... What am I claiming, other than there’s a villain or something more behind things and not just Wanda going mad from grief as in ‘Disassembled’? And which story are you saying they’re inspired by?

This apparently is a Scarlet Witch/Vision series, a Doctor Strange 2 prelude, Young Avengers prelude, and Captain Marvel 2 prelude. Good luck fitting that into 6 episodes

@Tonic24k - It just feels they're going way off script with the S.W.O.R.D. stuff. I just don't want this to be a Iron Man 2 situation where the focus shifts away from the main story and more on setting up future movies.

@soberchimera - At this current juncture, nothing should seem like anything. All the information we have is very little relative to the whole picture.
