Jon Favreau To Direct SHANNARA TV Series Pilot For MTV

We had heard that a tv show based on Terry Brooks' best selling series of fantasy novels was in the works already, but now a new report reveals that MTV will develop it with a straight-to-series option.

THR report that MTV are teaming up with Jon Favreau and Smallville duo Al Gough and Miles Millar to produce a television show based on the 20 strong series of novels in Terry Brooks' Shannara saga, which has been running for the past 25 years. There has been one graphic novel also - The Dark Wraith Of Shannara - published back in 2008. The story is set after the destruction of our civilization in the "great wars", with the world reverting to a medieval state and magic re-emerging. Many of the protagonists in the series are descended from the Eleven noble family of Shannara. Apparently the series will begin by adapting the second novel in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara. I cringe at the idea of the show being on MTV, but then they are doing a well job with Teen Wolf, and Jon Favreau is attached to it, so it has hope.

Teen Wolf is the only show worth watching on MTV.

MTV is emerging as a network to be recognised for it's original dramas.
Teen Wolf is pretty good and they have a lot of diverse and interesting pilots in the works.
I'm excited about this news!

I read Elf-stones and Sword but the series was inferior to Tolkien so I stopped. I'll give it a shot, though.

@ InfiniteMonkey Where have you been the last 20 years? MTV hasn't been a "music" channel for over a decade.

Gough and Millar are doing this? Brooks purists will freak out. And not in a good way.

Sword of Shannara is pretty much a direct rip off of Tolkien's LOTR. Characters can all be compared to Tolkien's work as well the story and themes. Tolkien is far superior.

@CorndogBurglar There is a difference between inspired and a rip off. Shannara takes place in the future and LOTR the past there is a big difference. Just because Shannara has Elves does not mean it's a rip off. But I guess in your mind Tolkien made up Elves and is the only one that can use them.

I've never heard of these novels before. Sounds sort of interesting though.

I'm pretty surprised MTV will be broadcasting this.

Started reading the first recently, the comparison to Lord of the Rings for younger readers was very apt. This isn't a bad thing as it took me three attempts to read LOTR when a teenager however I couldn't find the resolve to continue reading the first Shannara book. Having said that I randomly read the first book of the third trilogy (or second maybe) involving grandchildren of the characters years ago and quite enjoyed it, was a bit darker.

When reading "the Sword of Shannara" the first in the series(also Terry Brooks 1st novel) you have to remember that somebody told Brooks to be "very descriptive" about the forest and towns and.... so it is best if you just scan over those parts. If they can make this and stay true to the characters it should be good.

Teen Wolf was a big surprise.

... Great show; 10 times better than Agents of Shield IMO.

I read the first 5 or 6 books in highschool and I enjoyed them. If some one would PLEASE bring Drizzt Do'urden to the big screen life would be great.

@sikwon I liked the Drizzt trilogy I actually started with that one then I decided to read The Icewind Dale Trilogy(written first but takes after Drizzt Trilogy) and found there were just to many inconsistencies between the 2 trilogies. Like Salvatore should have reread his own books and created an outline of events or something before starting the next trilogy. I stopped reading half way through the 3 book of Icewind Dale.
