Poppy Drayton Lands Lead Role In MTV's SHANNARA Series

It's been a while since we found out that a TV show based on Terry Brooks' series of fantasy novels was in the works with Iron Man director Jon Favreau on board as producer and now we have a cast.

MTV are teaming up with Jon Favreau and Smallville duo Al Gough and Miles Millar to produce a television show based on the 20-strong series of novels (there has been one graphic novel also - The Dark Wraith Of Shannara - published back in 2008) in Terry Brooks' Shannara saga, which has been running for the past 25 years.

It's been quite some time since we heard anything about this, but now Deadline report that the lead role has been cast. Poppy Drayton (Downton Abbey, When Calls The Heart) will play Amberle, an Elf princess. The site describe the character as "agile, fit and capable, she has become the first female to be accepted as one of the Chosen, the special group of Elves responsible for the protection and care of the ancient Ellcrys tree. But unlike the rest of the Chosen, Amberle’s dangerous and heroic journey is just beginning." The story is set after the destruction of our civilization in the "great wars", with the world reverting to a medieval state and magic re-emerging. Many of the protagonists in the story are descended from the Eleven noble family of Shannara. Apparently the Tv show will begin by adapting the second novel in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara. The first two episodes will be directed by TMNT's Jonathan Liebesman

The Shannara series is pretty good. But MTV's attached to bring it to life, God help us all.

@RetroFit Yeah, they're going with Elfstones :^(

I know its the easier way out for the studio, but they should do the right thing and begin with the 1st King of Shannara and then follow into the Original Trilogy

Yeah, @DirtyMexican its basically that humanity has become medieval. (thanks to a nuclear holocaust) Society reverts to weaponry and magic, etc. (The original trilogy draws a lot of comparisons with the Lord of the Rings

I hope MTV will take this series seriously. If they do, it could become a huge it. So I will be hoping for the best.

I just started watching MTV's Teen Wolf series, and it's actually pretty solid for a show with a lame premise. If they can take Shannara seriously in the way they have with Teen Wolf, I have no doubt that it'll be a hit for MTV

I remember reading like book seven or something years ago and thinking it wasn’t bad (think it involved the grandchildren of the lead characters). I tried to read book one recently and really had to put down this terrible dumbed down Lord of The Rings knock off. Having said that, the premise wasn’t all that bad and good refinement in a TV series may suit it.

Might as well give this a shot. Just because most things on MTV are shitty it doesn't mean this will be. Sometimes a network needs only 1 good break like this. It happened for The History Channel and VIKINGS.
