HANNIBAL Could Continue As A Feature Film Down The Line

The world cried out in terror when NBC recently announced that they are cancelling the critically acclaimed television series, Hannibal. Wars were waged, hurricanes swept the coasts and world leaders declared a state of emergency. Despite much acclaim from critics and viewers, the show has struggled with ratings, inevitably leading to NBC's refusal to renew the series for a fourth season.

However, showrunner Bryan Fuller has been exploring possible options for continuing the series and has been looking for a new network in which the series can continue to air on. Netflix and Amazon were the networks that were first looked at as a possible new home for the series but a deal couldn't be struck with either network. Fuller explained, "We are still looking. Netflix couldn’t do it because of the Amazon streaming. Amazon would liked to have done it but they wanted to do it very quickly and I wanted to be able to get all the scripts in advance before we starting shooting…the schedule with their desire to put it on immediately was just impossible for us."

But Hannibal fans shouldn't lose all hope quite yet! Even if the series isn't picked up by another network, there is still hope for a continuation. According to Fuller, "We don’t have a lot of answers and we’re looking at the possibility of a feature. NBC allowed us to do some crazy sh*t for three years. We’d like to continue with the show so the way this season ends, there may be an opportunity for a little break and then hopefully we’ll find a way to bring Mads [Mikkelsen] and Hugh [Dancy] back to you."

A feature film, eh? Though it would be ideal for the series to find another network and continue in its television format, a feature film is better than no continuation at all. Considering the title "Hannibal" has already been used by the 2001 film of the same name, one must wonder what a Hannibal feature film would be titled.

Regardless, the remainder of the third season will continue to air on NBC, weekly on Thursday nights.  Beginning with the eighth episode of the season, the show will adapt the Thomas Harris novel, Red Dragon.
