Netflix has commissioned a new animated series based on Magic: The Gathering, and Avengers: Endgame duo Joe and Anthony Russo are on board as executive producers.

The Russos, who are long-time fans and players of the fantasy trading card game, will be joined by Henry Gilroy (Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Jose Molina (The Tick, Agent Carter) as lead writers and co-exec producers. The series will reportedly focus on an all-new storyline, but it will involve M:TG's famed Planeswalkers "as they contend with stakes larger than any one world can hold."

"Magic is a beloved global franchise with a massively engaged fan base that has only continued to grow over the last 25 years,” said John Derderian, head of anime programming at Netflix. "There’s no one better suited to bring this story to audiences around the world than Joe and Anthony Russo, whose talent for genre storytelling is unmatched, as demonstrated by their central role in creating some of the biggest box office hits of all time."

Apparently, the the long-term plan is for Netflix and Hasbro-owned Wizards of the Coast to expand the anime show into a larger franchise featuring multiple series.

Let's hope it's not another Deadly Class.

Was never able to properly play the game because it had a lot of rules and stuff. Hopefully they can go “all out” with the animation which is something that could make or break the show depending on the team behind it.

Will keep an eye out for it.

@NinnesMBC - lol. Imagine that. A card game with rules.

@CorndogBurglar - Let’s just say I learned faster and enjoyed much more Yu-Gi-Oh! than Magic. 😅

Is it going to be anime style? My hope would be the same look and feel as Blizzard's WoW cinematics, but I'd imagine that would be very expensive.

@Vanillain - It looks like its going to be more 3D anime like how Ultraman and Saint Seiya are on Netflix

I enjoyed the flavor text of the cards more than the game itself, which is probably why my Goblin deck was horrible. Though it did rock a lot of direct damage spells that have since been removed/made "illegal."

Not sure how the game can convert into a series.... had a deck as kid but didn't play much (I'm more into RPGs), does it have further "lore" like stories and characters to build upon?...
