It Appears Some STAR WARS Fans Have Now Resorted To Review-Bombing Merchandise For THE ACOLYTE

With The Acolyte over and done with after a single season, some angry Star Wars fans have now resorted to review-bombing merchandise for the divisive Disney+ series. You can find more details on that here.

When The Acolyte was cancelled by Disney+ earlier this month, many people noticed that merchandise for the divisive Star Wars series had seemingly been pulled from the official online Disney Store.

We're still no sure whether it was a coincidence, an error, or a deliberate move on the House of Mouse's part, but several items do now appear on the site. However, it seems that came as a blow to the show's detractors as they're now review-bombing...t-shirts?!

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, there are "fans" giving this merch for The Acolyte the lowest scores possible and leaving comments clearly unrelated to the quality of the items. One example reads, "The failure of one, The failure of two, The failure of Disney." How clever!

Of course, this comes as a petition asking Disney to renew The Acolyte has passed 53,000 signatures. Its rival petition, "DON'T renew The Acolyte," sits at a mere 8,200 signatures in comparison.

Neither of those is likely to change the studio's mind as it's been widely reported that the series was expensive to produce and a dip in viewership after the first couple of episodes essentially sealed its fate, anyway. We may get other continuations, though, such as comics or novels.

Lee Jung-jae, who played Jedi Master Sol in the show recently addressed the cancellation when he said, "As you know, my character had died already in the first season. So I wouldn't have appeared in the second season if there was one anyway."

"But personally speaking, I really loved Leslye’s writing. I thought that she was a great writer and director who was very talented in the storytelling, as well as creating characters and creating meaningful structures within the story," the Squid Game actor continued. "So I was actually personally really looking forward to watching a season 2 with her at the helm."

How much merchandise for The Acolyte is in your Star Wars collection? Let is know in the usual place.

In The Acolyte, an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems...

The series stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss.

The entire first season of The Acolyte is streaming on Disney+.

They should let it go; it's over.

Same with you, sir.

Getting the vibe that this is bugging you a bit.

It was a dull show, and isn't worth all this hoopla from these folk or yourself.

@DravenCorvis - The site "writers" have turned into the Synder cult....it's comical given how many articles this dude posted making fun of them.

The Acolyte had some interesting ideas and connections to the greater Star Wars Lore, but the execution was pretty awful and they wasted an entire season working towards something mildly worthwhile.

Disney+ shows biggest problems are usually down to pacing and bloat. I'm surprised the Fandom hasn't edited the show's content into a movie format or at least a miniseries to eliminate all the excess and filler.

@xfan320 - You've put my thoughts into words, I completely agree. Interesting idea but badly executed. Starting with every scene you can easily tell they used thar wrap around screen in the worst way. Mandoloarian at least at depth to its set pieces.

@TheFinestSmack - So ... you're saying that Disney is leaving negative reviews on Acolyte shirts?
TheFinestSmack
TheFinestSmack - 8/28/2024, 9:33 AM
@clintthahamster - I'm saying "fan backlash" is just clickbait nonsense and if we want to take away the power of those "fans" we need to stop talking about them as if they are significant. Disney spent more on this show than their other Star Wars shows and it got less viewership than said shows, so Disney cancelled it for that reason.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 8/28/2024, 9:42 AM
@TheFinestSmack - But Disney's not the one flogging the fan backlash narrative, are they? You said it yourself, "Disney spent more on this show than their other Star Wars shows and it got less viewership than said shows, so Disney cancelled it for that reason."
TheFinestSmack
TheFinestSmack - 8/28/2024, 9:46 AM
@clintthahamster - I mean, if you consider "Disney" to be the cast and crew of this very show, representing the show in interviews and music videos, then yeah, they absolutely were the ones flogging the fan backlash. In some cases, before the show even aired it's first episode.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 8/28/2024, 9:55 AM
@TheFinestSmack - "if you consider "Disney" to be the cast and crew of this very show, representing the show in interviews and music videos"

Sure, if you define Disney as "anyone that has worked for Disney in any capacity," then yes, you are correct. But also, that's kind of insane. If a dude working the register at McDonalds told you that 5G caused COVID, do you think it would be appropriate to say "McDonalds says that 5G causes COVID?"

Not a perfect metaphor, I'll grant you, but in short, the opinions of the employees of a corporation do not always (or even often) reflect the corporate philosophy of their employer.

@clintthahamster - That's true, but this isn't just one instance of one Disney employee making claims. Disney allows these actors/writers/producers etc to continuously deflect any and all criticism by accusing their vast audiences of being bigots for having (often) reasonable opinions. I guess I can rephrase "Disney" in the meme and replace it with "the vocal creatives involved in the Acolyte."
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 8/28/2024, 12:38 PM
@TheFinestSmack - I'd be willing to go as far as "Disney doesn't discourage their creative talent from answering questions about the very real harassment that many of them have experienced," but I haven't seen any evidence that Disney is trying to actively push a narrative that any complaint about any Disney show is inherently bigoted.

Is the stance of this site that this was good or not? Because, I mean, it was trash. Just storytelling trash.

There's lots of simple examples, like characters literally just shouting "what did you do?!" at each other, in a scene so comedically bad that they actually cut is short when flashbacking to the same scene a second time. But let's dig a little deeper. During the first flashback episode we see things from the perspectives of every character involved. The Jedi, the mothers, both twins. So we aren't seeing what one of the twins, or one of the Jedi remembers; we are seeing what happened, from a neutral viewpoint. Right?

But then, in the second flashback episode, further information is revealed to the viewer that was simply left out the first time. When Emo Twin starts the fire, we see her outside the door in the first epsiode; but then, we only see her panic and try to stop the fire in the second flashback. This kind of "ahah! gotcha!" story twist simply doesn't work when Emo has been a perspective character during the original episode. The flashback should have originally been from the perspective of Dumb Twin; what she thinks she remembers happening, not a broken digest from an unrealible unseen narrator.

That kind of deep-seated narrative failure runs through the entire series. I couldn't tell you what either of the twins really wanted, or what the Jedi think went so wrong on Witchy Planet that two of them basically become hermits. Emo Twin literally changes her mind about what she wants 3 times during a single episode, with little explanation why. The trained Jedi Master who takes the wrong twin back to his spaceship, seemingly without even realizing it for ages! My God! The only way to save the character was have him spot the switch immediately and play along; if that's what happened, it was not even hinted at. That Emo Twin even thinks such a dumb plan could work--or why she even does it?! MY GOD!

Ah well. Enough. It proved that some great light saber fights and "ooh let's do some GoT twists, that was a good show!" storytelling can't save a narrative and characters you just don't care about. Great action needs stakes behind each swing of those swords. Here I couldn't tell you what anyone wanted, or why.

Is the stance of @RealTurner that it is normal to hate a TV show so much that you would go leave fake reviews on T-shirts?
