THE MANDALORIAN Accused Of Stealing Baby Yoda Design By GREMLINS Director Joe Dante

Disney+ launched in 2019 with The Mandalorian, the first ever live-action Star Wars TV show. Fans were instantly transfixed by the adventures of the title bounty hunter, though it was the jaw-dropping cliffhanger ending that generated the most discussion.

The target Din Djarin had been set to track down turned out to be a creature fans instantly dubbed "Baby Yoda." We'd later learn that The Child's name was Grogu, though that original moniker has stuck. While Grogu isn't a young Yoda clone (as many fans first theorised), he does resemble the legendary Jedi Master, and also happens to be ridiculously cute. However, Gremlins director Joe Dante isn't a fan.

During a recent interview with the San Francisco Chronicle (via SFFGazette.com), Dante shared his take on the similarities between Grogu and the Mogwai Gizmo, making it clear he believes the team working on The Mandalorian ripped off the design seen in the 1984 classic.

"I think the longevity of [the Gremlins films] is really key to this one character [Gizmo], who is essentially like a baby," Dante said. "Which brings me, of course, to the subject of Baby Yoda, who is completely stolen and is just out-and-out copied. Shamelessly, I would think."

It's worth noting that Yoda first appeared in 1980's The Empire Strikes Back, and Grogu is essentially just a shrunken-down version. There are some similarities to Gizmo, and it's certainly possible that the Mogwai crossed the minds of those who designed the character, but to say The Child is a blatant rip-off seems like a stretch.

Like the Star Wars franchise, Gremlins is heading to the small screen with the upcoming animated series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, on HBO Max.

As for Grogu, we still haven't learned who saved him from the Jedi Temple or where he was during the events of the sequel trilogy. After The Book of Boba Fett, it's obviously been confirmed that he wasn't at Luke Skywalker's Jedi Training Academy when that was attacked by Supreme Leader Snoke, so there are no doubt many more stories to be told with Gizmo The Child.

As for The Mandalorian, that's set to return to HBO Max sometime in February 2023.

Well its true there's similarities..especially when you see how both of them be attacking snacks lol but gremlins 3 never happened, so Grogu will do. Plus it's not like Yoda himself ain't been around for minute.

Empire came out in 1980 and Gremlins came out in ‘84. Grogu is the same species as yoda. People need to think before they open their mouths.

@OldMan - If anything, Gizmo looks like he was directly inspired from Yoda, not the other way around.

@OldMan -
Yeah, it's kinda stupid as a director to claim this, because proving the similarity would mean your design stole from Yoda which would make you viable to be sued.

TLDR: He played himself.

@OldMan - Yeah, dude might have turned around and set HIMSELF up to get sued for unknowingly telling on himself, being that Yoda was out before Gremlins.

There’s no real similarities other then maybe the shape of the eyes lol the ears are completely different. Gizmo has a beer belly, his mouth almost looks like beak. Dudes just mad nobody cares about weak ass gizmo and his bullshit care instructions. Meanwhile Grogu over here levitating shit,.

He's jealous that Baby Yoda has outshined Gremlins in popularity.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Comments like these baffle me. Like why do we care which corporations product is more popular, as if we're the ones getting paid, as if being more popular = better quality. Baby Yoda was made to sell you on a product by appealing to your inner child. Nothing more nothing less. As a character itself, Baby Yoda is utterly bland. And while this guy is clearly out there to promote himself, something being more popular isn't always a good thing. There are so many movies, characters that are the least popular that are simply just better than the most popular ones. I can name you 5 comedy tv shows that are the best ever that wouldn't even crack the top 50 in terms of popularity. The most popular ones are usually the most bland, garbage ones.

I mean, most similarities are limited to the fact they are designed to be small, cute creatures. Not really more than that.

What a dumbass.

Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Gremlins (1984)

Grogu looks nothing like Gizmo. His look is just a smaller infant Yoda.

This guy been smoking crack with Hunter or something?
