THE MANDALORIAN Star Giancarlo Esposito Teases The Return Of Moff Gideon And His "Big Brain"

The Mandalorian is expected to return to Disney+ next year, and star Giancarlo Esposito has now teased Moff Gideon's future, hinting at the role he could continue playing in this Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Giancarlo Esposito cemented himself as one of the great Star Wars villains in The Mandalorian, but Moff Gideon found himself soundly defeated in the show's season 2 finale. That doesn't mean we've seen the last of him, of course, and the actor teased his future in the Disney+ series during a recent interview with Variety

"I have to imagine you would [see Gideon return]. I can't speak for [Lucasfilm], but I know I have desire," he teased. "I think we need to see Moff to continue the story, and to continue the pressure and edge that someone with the big brain that Moff has thinks about."

"I can almost guarantee it, but there's never a guarantee. But...you'll see me, baby. Come on!"

It's become clear in The Mandalorian that Gideon had something to do with the return of Emperor Palpatine, and it would be strange to move on from that after all those big teases. He wanted Grogu for some sort of cloning experiments, while the figure in that vat looked an awful lot like the being we'd come to know as Supreme Leader Snoke (a vessel controlled by Palpatine).

Esposito couldn't shed any light on this speculation, of course, but he did share his gratitude for that recent Emmy nomination. "The fact that I'm here tonight, and the position I am to be nominated for Moff Gideon? I thank Jon Favreau, and I thank Dave Filoni, and I thank Disney, and Kathleen Kennedy for producing. This show has taken people by storm, because there's so much to love."

There's still a lot of story to cover in The Mandalorian, and with all those spinoffs on the way, it's clear Favreau and Filoni have huge plans for the Star Wars franchise on the small screen in the coming years.

How much Moff Gideon will factor into those plans is a mystery to us for the time being!

I'm guessing that he will show up once or twice in the third season, including him escaping Mandalorian custody, only for him to return in a fourth season as mutual enemy to all (yet to be united) Mandalorians

@JohnPain - I'm really interested to see what the relationship of Gideon and Thrawn is going to be, since it's been confirmed that both them are going to be active in the upcoming shows. Gideon's role in Mandalorian really reminded me of Thrawn's role in the original Thrawn-trilogy in legends.

Moff Gideon is a survivor. Perhaps he is accused of crimes against the galaxy. So, Gideon makes a deal with the New Republic. He reveals the location of the Imperial factions scattered throughout the galaxy in exchange for a reprieve.

Leia opposes this pact. So she distances herself from the New Republic.

Gideon may meet someone in the New Republic. Perhaps a former aristocrat who changed his name to come out of the persecution. Perhaps a member of the Dooku Family.

@Repian -

I'd really like some clarity on exactly what Mandalorian is going to do with the legacy characters (like Leia). I'm starting to warm to the idea of recasting everybody, even if it's not always "perfect" like a Sebastian Stanwalker.

I'm curious if you've given Leia any thought (I know you've got the fancasting bug). Some time ago, I started leaning toward maybe Lacey Chabert. She's not an obvious choice, since I think she spends most of her time on cable movies now, but I feel like she's got a lot of the look and vibe.

(The rest of my short list for Leia is basically Emmy Rossum, who is almost certainly the stronger performer, but she looks a lot less like Carrie Fisher. If it's a relatively small part to sort of fill in the continuity, Chabert might be the better choice.) I guess I'm just sort of reluctant to see another CG face-replacement.

It would be cool if there is an episode of the Mandalorian S3 that begins with Moff being broken out of whatever prison he is in.
