We've known from the start that The Mandalorian takes place in the years following Return of the Jedi, but there's been some confusion surrounding what the show's timeline actually is. The waters were further muddied recently with comments from creator Jon Favreau that seemed to suggest Din Djarin and Grogu were separated for as long as two years!

Talking at the global premiere for season 3, Favreau was asked to clarify those comments by Variety (via SFFGazette.com), and while they now make a little more sense, it still feels like he's being deliberately vague!

"I don't know if I said many years, it's probably about the real-time that we've experienced it. So it was the end of Season 2 when they said goodbye, we checked in in 'The Book of Boba Fett' about a year ago when they parted company again, and then he rejoined the Mandalorian."

"So now, I think somewhere in there, more than one and less than, you know, somewhere between zero and two years." Favreau went on to confirm Din and Grogu definitely weren't parted for too long, so we're guessing around a year has passed at most since the season 2 finale.

We can't blame the showrunner for not wanting to tie himself to a specific period as there's only a finite amount of time between Return of the Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker to explore.

Going back to season 3, though, and we have a full gallery of concept art from "The Apostate." Highlighting several key moments, including IG-11's shock return, Bo-Katan Kryze on her throne, and that explosive opening, the artwork offers a fascinating glimpse into how those scenes were brought to life.

The Mandalorian's season 3 premiere included a surprise nod to Star Wars Rebels that you can read about by clicking here. We've also broken down how Cara Dune is written out of the series (find that here) and details on the unexpected return of a fan-favourite character are here

I'll stick to it taking place in realtime then, since it makes enough sense to me.

And if S1 takes place in 9 ABY/2019, S2 in 10 ABY/2020, TBOBF in 12 ABY/2022 and S3 in 13 ABY/2023, I guess Ashoka might take place in 13 ABY/2023 as well then.

Bo Katan was like

I wanted to enjoy episode 1, but it really bugged me that Grogu was back and they just assumed we would all be fine with it. Those of us that didn't watch Boba were kind of just left to google it. At the start the viewer could have thought it was a prequel to season 2 tbh.

Also needing the bounty-droid was a stretch. And the scene with Bo Katan (though i love Bo Katan) was totally random. Mando said he would go get the part he needed, then next thing he speaks to Bo Katan for all of 2 seconds before leaving her there.

Hopefully this ep was just a slightly bumpy reset so that they can continue on now as if the last ep of season 2 didn't happen (i guess). The look, feel and tone of the show is still so good.

@TheManWithoutFear - I don't think they are trying to reset the last episode of season 2. Boba Fett was filming too soon after Mando S2 filmed. They knew what they were doing.

I think it was a bad decision though. The stuff in Boba Fett should have been the first two episodes of this season. There were 2 full episodes of Boba Fett that were all Mando. They didn't even feel like part of the Boba Fett show and had nothing to do with the story.

They could have easily had Mando only in the last episode to help Boba with Tatooine, then had him leave. Then S3 could have started with Mando seeing the Armorer and visiting Grogu. Then it would at least felt a little longer between the events of S2 and S3, and people that didn't watch Boba Fett wouldn't have missed anything.

There was really no need for those 2 episodes to be in Boba Fett. But I think they wanted to draw more viewers to the Boba Fett show by having 2 full Mando episodes in it. Because those were easily the best part of that show, sadly.

@CorndogBurglar - Yeah it sounds like that would have been a good idea.

An okay start to the season. Of the 3 season premieres so far, the weakest of the bunch. Hopefully the rest of the season picks up and is more exciting and energetic.

Anybody else hate it when directors go for flare over sound battle tactics? That battle vs the giant crocodile was awful. Any Mando with a jetpack would have instantly taken to the air, and all the rest on the ground would have backed the hell up to higher ground, instead of standing around to get eaten. And how are wrist ropes going to do anything at all? It was all kind of stupid. And I love how the solution to being target locked by a giant space pirate ship is to just jump to hyperspace. Who knew. Why even stick around to listen to them? Just jump away already.
