It's been a while since we had any updates on this one, but Deadline is reporting that the gender-swapped, small-screen reboot of Zorro that was being developed for NBC is now headed to The CW.
Robert and Rebecca Rodriguez are still on board as co-writer and director, respectively, but Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, who was set to produce via her LatinWe company, has parted ways with the project. Sean Tretta (Mayans M.C.) has been added to the creative team.
Although this is said to be a new incarnation of the show, it's still expected to be modern-day take on the classic western adventure tale and center on Sola Dominguez, "an underground artist who fights for social injustice as contemporary version of the mythical Zorro. Her life is threatened by several criminal organizations after she exposes them."
This won't be Rodriguez's first duel with the legendary vigilante, as he was attached to direct 1998's The Mask of Zorro starring Antonio Banderas before ultimately parting ways with the project. Martin Campbell was then hired as his replacement.
It was reported last June that Quentin Tarantino was working on a big-screen adaptation of his Django/Zorro Dynamite/DC Vertigo comic series, but there's been no word on the movie since.
