VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE Reviews Are In, & The Sequel Is Faring A LOT Better Than Its Predecessor

The first wave of reviews for Venom: Let There Be Carnage are now in, and while there are still plenty more to come, the Sony Pictures sequel is faring a lot better than the first movie so far...

Though 2018's Venom proved to be a surprise box office success, it was pretty much torn to shreds by most critics (it earned a lousy 30% on Rotten Tomatoes). The sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, is set to hit theaters this weekend, and the first wave of reviews have been far more positive.

Though the movie still has its share of detractors, the Andy Serkis-helmed Marvel Comics adventure seems to have won over the majority of critics who shared their verdicts (you can check out our own Josh Wilding's take here), and currently sits at a fairly impressive 76% on RT. While that score is sure to fluctuate, this is certainly an encouraging start.

While the short run-time was an issue for some, THR reckons "The best thing you can say about the action in Carnage is that it doesn't stretch the film past the hour-and-a-half mark." Den of Geek was even less impressed, concluding a 2-star write-up with, "Yes, Venom 2 is better than the first Venom, but then so are trips to the dentist."

The LA Times gave a glowing review, however, describing the movie as "touching, wild entertainment," and adding that "It's the themes of home, love, and companionship that make Serkis' sequel another reason to want more Venom movies, and quickly." Digital Spy also had a lot of fun with VLTMC, calling it "exactly what you want out of a film: a fun time without chest-beating moralistic, bloated stories, or perfunctory action. On these, Venom: Let There Be Carnage delivers as the odd-couple, campy-action ride we were promised."

You can have a read through the rest of the reviews here, but it sounds like fans of the first movie will be very happy with this sequel, and even if you hated it, you might just be won over by the Carnage on display.

I like how the quoted tweet and article say two different scores. Solid work. Surprised Wilding didn't write it.

@BackwardGalaxy - who says he didn’t right, right, WRONG, they are TWO, DIFFERENT, PEOple, and anybody they says they ain’t… you know I’ve never seen them, but I’ve def seen them in the same room together. I think one of them is real and the other is a pen name gone to life, different look, same fingerprints! And on a rampage to kill all who mocked the real one, who is outwardly horrified but inwardly can’t wait to see how it all plays out. That’s a good alibi, everyone was at the trampoline park with em while THE PEN NAME went after the commenters. Which is why I leave them alone

I think I saw the post-credit on YouTube.
I regret nothing. The rotten tomatoes has been a roller coaster this morning.

@SanFranLand - aaaaaand back down. I like this review: “ It's the worst movie Tom Hardy ever made. It's the worst movie Woody Harrelson ever made. And it's the worst movie Michelle Williams ever made.”

Surprised to see this doing well. Avi Arad and the other executives must have done a better job keeping their claws off of it.

Still not going to see it, though.

It’s interesting that most of the positive reviews seem to just stem out of the fact that people had a better idea of what to expect after the first movie.
Like, not many of these reviews are straight up just saying it’s a good movie, just noting that the first one had success and made fans and this doubled down on what worked.

@Armageddon26 - I'm really confused by your logic here. You said none of the good reviews actually called it a good movie, but explained how the movie focused on what worked. How does that not make it a good movie? Do they really need to say it's a good movie to buy that they liked it?

@Origame - I’m high lol, it’s making sense to me 💀

But like, I just mean none of the positive reviews really seemed to call it a genuinely good film, just an improvement over its predecessor and giving it a positive review based on the fact that it improved upon the few aspects of the first film that already worked.

The consensus seems to be they found enjoyment in it, noticed improvements, more tonal consistency, and since the first film found such success this one is still playing to the audience it built. But it seems like a film that few people find to be genuinely “good”. Idk. It just seems to me like an interesting case of critic perceptions changing from first movie to sequel after having time between to see what elements resonated with audiences and more leveled expectations of what the tone of this universe is

@Armageddon26 - look, idk. That all sounds like they liked the movie to me. It just comes off as you thinking about it too much.

But as for the "understanding the kind of movie it is", maybe that has to do with their perception of the first movie. They had different expectations for the first one, it effected their perspective, and now that they have the full context it's giving them a better appreciation for the new one. Who knows, maybe they would have better feelings on the first one with a rewatch.

@Armageddon26 - Yeah, it's like the first movie set the bar too low for critics, so now they are just acknowledging how Sony improved from a mess of a movie to an okay fun movie (hence why they're also highlighting the fact that is only runs for 90 minutes)

@SorcererSupreme - Yeah, exactly what I was thinking! You condensed the thoughts I have in a much coherent way lol.
