2023 was an unmitigated disaster for the DC Extended Universe and even Marvel Studios struggled after The Marvels bombed at the box office.

For Sony Pictures' Marvel Universe, things haven't been good for a long time. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 went way over budget in 2014 and a combination of lower-than-expected profits and negative reviews left them with no other choice than to share the web-slinger with Marvel Studios.

Those movies have been a massive success, but Sony's own live-action efforts have been a mixed bag. Venom was a box office hit but ended up being eviscerated by critics. Venom: Let There Be Carnage was in a similar position, but Morbius and Madame Web are destined to go down as two of the biggest superhero flops ever made.

The buzz surrounding Kraven the Hunter is already extremely negative (especially in the wake of countless delays) and there doesn't appear to be a huge amount of excitement for Venom: The Last Dance either.

The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with star Juno Temple - who plays Dr. Payne - and asked if she's feeling any pressure for the Venom threequel to deliver after Sony's "recent streak."

"I can honestly say that I’m not programmed to think about it like that," the actress admitted. "It’s quite new for me to be a part of a movie of this size. I’m just hoping that I did the best job I could on a [movie] that was a really amazing thing to be involved in."

"I hope that whether the five people go to see it or whether 500 go see it, or more, I hope that they enjoy it and it takes them out of their everyday lives for a minute," Temple concluded.

Venom's popularity and the fact this movie is being billed as the end of his trilogy should be enough to ensure The Last Dance doesn't suffer the same fate as Morbius and Madame Web. How it fares with critics and fans may be another matter altogether, of course.

In Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy returns as Venom, one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters, for the final film in the trilogy. Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie's last dance.

The movie stars Tom Hardy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, Stephen Graham, and Rhys Ifans. Kelly Marcel directs from a screenplay she wrote, based on a story by Hardy and Marcel. The film is produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, Kelly Marcel, Tom Hardy and Hutch Parker.

Venom: The Last Dance will be released in theaters on October 25.

@Oberlin4Prez - Marvel did have a big hit with GotG 3, roughly broke even with AM3 so it WAS only The Marvels that flopped hard even if fair to say Quantumania wasn't a good film, DC however everything flopped although Aquaman did at least get over double it's budget at the WWBO, just, but only 2.1 times budget when it needs 2.5x

@MisterDoctor217 - It’s just that, what does have to do with the price of tea in china?

What does an opening line about a dead franchise and a wholly separate entity within the Marvel landscape have anything to do with the topic at hand? I’m honestly not even mad. I literally laughed out loud because it’s just so darn absurd that one would take the time to blast something that has literally nothing to do with the supposed topic of your article.

@Oberlin4Prez - I can't believe I'm going to say this, but for the absolute very first time in the history of Earth... Josh is right. How many cbm's lost money and/or barely broke even? Digital releases and early streaming dates [frick]ed this all up, plus the garbage writing, mediocre origin stories and subpar shows for streaming

@bobevanz - if the subject of the article were, What’s the deal with all these poorly received Comicbook shows/movies? Then yeah, I’d totally get that as an opening line, but that’s not the subject of the article.

It’s be like if the New York Times ran a piece about the war in Ukraine and began with, “we all know Donald trump is a Russian asset, but in a recent interview, president Zalinsky states he can’t get money from Biden to support the war”.

like, what?
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/15/2024, 10:21 AM
@Oberlin4Prez - It is tiresome how oft DC is dragged into convos about Marvel related things and vice versa, sometimes there is sound reason to do so if talking about box office as a context of all CBM's not doing well can be relevant...

...always said it is daft pitting two comics against each other all the time as many enjoy multiple including the big two and even if favour one will oft enjoy adaptions from the other.

This one mostly being specificaly about if a prior Sony comic film being viewed as bad adds pressure to an actor to be better in her role. BO isn't even realy an aspect of that as bad films can turn out a huge BO and great films can flop and what will do which is completely beyond an actors control so doubt many go into roles worrying about it.

As such, yeh BO struggles shouldn't have been dragged into it at all let alone putting down DC but we know why some do that with articles, it pokes the bear for more debate and clicks which we've played straight into by discussing it, lol.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/15/2024, 10:25 AM
@Oberlin4Prez - BTW I'd also add that pointing out the recent MCU struggles is equaly irrelevant to what Sony have been upto as the DC ones...

...EVERYONE agrees the Sony cast of villains films have been bad, even if and when some may have found some enjoyment from them and the Venom films, dispite their many issues, have done OK at the box office.

Oberlin4Prez - 6/15/2024, 10:59 AM
@Apophis71 - oh I totally agree. Neither needs to be dragged through the mud in this instance given the subject matter. I’m a DC fanboy through and through, but a spade is a spade in this instance and mentioning the word of either seems unnecessary given the topic at hand.

I agree with her. Movies , at least some movies , should be fun escapism. Something to get you out of your routine and away from all those bad news and awful things happening in the world.

Obviously there can also be serious movies that touch upon complex subjects, but why do you guys want every CBM to be like that ? It takes away the fun.

Obviously there can also be awful fun movies like Love And Thunder, that one tried to have it both ways and ended up being just horrible. But that doesn’t meant they should stop trying to make fun, cool comic book movies. You just need the right people
To make them.

Just like Godzilla x Kong. Was it dumb asf? Yes. But it was also fun and exciting. Something not every director gets right.
bobevanz
bobevanz - 6/15/2024, 9:50 AM
@MisterDoctor217 - it also depends on where this mindless entertainment comes from. The monsterverse has been a bare bones team up with lots of cgi, nobody was expecting top notch, you watch Minus One for that. It depends lol and I'd say the bar for cbm's was raised after Infinity War and Endgame
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/15/2024, 10:42 AM
@bobevanz - As someone who recalls when a CBM making over $300M was an unbelievable achievment, we still rave about how good and how it was a big hit Blade was with a BO of $130M, the bar set by IW and Endgame is mind blowing and unrealistic on that aspect alone but also the bulk of CBM's always tended to be a fairly simple bad guy does bad things and hero puts a stop to them (normaly taking a fall in the second act and comes back stronger).

CBM's need not be complex narratives and oft if they try to do plot twists it isn't well recieved (Mandarin), cool when they DO pull of a more complex story but a relatively simple action packed and/or fun popcorn flick is still what a lot of the GA want from a CBM.

People blame movies to bad not people who are in them Haley berry was in Catwoman that was bad years later she was storm
I hope that they enjoy it and it takes them out of their everyday lives for a minute, ( tell that to people who are non paid movie critics who never worked in Hollywood who they think they know a lot about writing and acting
bobevanz
bobevanz - 6/15/2024, 9:54 AM
I love the people who complain about sequels, requels, and reboots and how Hollywood isn't original but they don't go to see the movies like Maxxxine and Challengers, or Everything Everywhere or Zone of Interest. They say the academy awards is stupid and all those movies are boring.. like just admit you're a moron lol
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/15/2024, 10:59 AM
@bobevanz - Getting folk interested enough to turn a profit on something completely new and original is incredibly tough to do, hence why you have a Taxi Driver type film using a VERY loose adaption of a well known comic character or an original not canon to anything study into how someone can start out good and turn evil (whilst someone else who starts out a bad person can end up viewed as good) the nature of the roots of terrorism, with a backdrop of political propaganda and experimenting on animals (all heavy stuff) uses a known villain to make a non-canon WoZ book then hit musical...

...Hollywood risks a lot of money making blockbusters, like it or not the safer investments are always going to be sequels and reboots on prior success and/or exploiting well loved IP's oft using a LOT of tried and tested formulas. We're just lucky when they sometimes pull off something that FEELS more original and less by the numbers and happens to be a subject or IP we care about.

As you say, there is a reason why the industry have awards that go to outstanding achievements for films that can oft have ended up NOT making a profit, but that said can see why at times they get mocked too.
