Producer says Silent Hill 2 to a "Wider Audience"

The story will take place "years later" and is geared toward a "much older...movie-going public."

While chatting with shocktillyoudrop.com the producer of Silent Hill 2 had this to say:

"I think we need to make it a little more accessible to the movie-going public," he goes on to say, "Silent Hill is not a blockbuster game like Resident Evil or the other games out there. It's a connoisseurs' game. It has its own, rabid fan base. They're not cheap, these things. You have to appeal not only to the gamers, you have to appeal to a wider audience. So we have to get some story in there that helps explain a bit more. I think that's all happening. Of course, [the story] is going to happen years later and the main character - without giving too much away - is much older and representative to the movie-going public which is in that age group."

hgmE: Rough speculation leads me to this conclusion: Silent Hill 2 is going to be PG-13

Don't you find that odd for a series of M-rated games?

@movietheaterlad - I'm not saying "OMG NO GUTS/TITS??????? EPIC FAIL!!!!!!!!'
actually, silent hill is a staggeringly horrific place, and I feel in order to properly convey that you're going to have to show some pretty disturbing things, things that probably aren't going to fly with a low rating. Less disturbing atmosphere = less terrifying town. and seeing as how the town is the real enemy in most of the games, you've got a weak villain.

@betty - Silent Hill was actually not bad. I don't know if you played any of the games, but you should. Aside from all the asinine Hollywood cliches we had to endure it was a fairly faithful adaptation. (sort of a SH2 ripoff, but that's fine with me)

Silent Hill 2 is going to be PG-13???

Shit, the first movie was the best movie adaptation of a game... and you want to change that...

@movietheaterlad - You have a good point. I just hope they don't aim for too wide of an audience, that could bring problems.

Hopefully they'll have the same director. Gans really captured the look and feel of the games. Silent hill was one of those few video game movies, that was a good adaptation of the source material, and yet an entertaining piece of work. I'm just suprised that it took so long for them to start thinking about a sequel.
